Lily didnât know if he worried about the war or about anything at all. She would never have suspected it. James Potter always seemed so laid-back and so casual; she would never have imagined he actually had loads of things to worry about. There was also the fact that they had never really had a heart to heart talk so she had ever really asked him about those things. What they really knew about each other was rather limited. She didnât even know if he had a middle name, or what were his parentsâ jobs or even where he lived. The truth was that Lily never had bothered in getting to know him; not when he had constantly pestered her and Severus in the past. However, things were different now and getting to know him better didnât sound like a bad idea.Â
Of course she noticed he was trying. He didnât seem so eager to prank everyone in his way and it looked like he was taking both his duties and his studies with responsibility and maturity. That didnât quite convince her though. She wasnât sure if he had really changed, if that arrogant toe-rag she had told off in fifth year wasnât there somewhere; eager to come out at the first opportunity. Many of the fourth year girls who were so interested in their so called love story said that he had changed for her. She didnât want anyone to change for her; that wasnât the point. James Potter needed to grow up for himself, and she wasnât going to be convinced until she saw solid proof of that.Â
Despite that, she had to admit he had some great qualities. He was definitely funny - even though she was never going to admit that - and definitely smarter than people thought. He was also brave. With a position like his, he could perfectly stay still and watch purists endanger muggle-borns like nothing was happening. Nonetheless, he constantly chose to fight against that. He had taken Sirius in when he had left home and some people called him blood traitor on daily basis; but he didnât mind. He kept fighting for equality and justice and that was something she had to give him. It was something to be admired. Â
"Donât worry about it Potter. Weâre trying to be friends, arenât we? The least I can do is forgive you because you called me a prude. Merlin knows Iâve called you way worse than that before." She definitely had, especially during their endless arguments. Back in fourth and fifth year they used to fight all the time. So much that the Common Room would usually empty once they started arguing. That had stopped after Severusâ mudblood debacle. The shadow of that unfortunate situation had been always hanging in there, between them, and Lily had been too afraid of James bringing the incident up to keep antagonizing him full force. Consequently, she had limited herself to snarky and hurtful comments whenever he would pester her about something. That was, of course, until she found out he was going to be Head Boy.
There were no students behind the ladder, so she started to climb up the stairs to check if someone had had the unfortunate idea of doing some star gazing. âUhm, letâs see⌠Potions, Charms, Transfigurations, Herbology, Runes, Arithmancy, Care of Magical Creatures, History of Magic and Defence Against the Dark Arts.â She shrugged. âI know they sound like a lot⌠I mean, theyâre a lot⌠but Iâd like to keep my options open.â
James often kept to himself. He wasn't one to talk about what he thought or what bothered him. He probably knew everything he ever needed to know about Lily; not like any of that knowledge was put into good use. If someone had told him that he'd be Head Boy last year, he'd hex them to kingdom come. Now, if someone were to tell him he'd be spending this much time with Lily while having civil conversation, he would have laughed his socks off. It was hard to believe that so much had changed in a matter of a few months. Lily was more mature than he was used to, and she was a lot wittier with her comebacks. He was often tempted to get a rile out of her, but he held his tongue. It was not worth losing what friendship they seemed to have.
He didn't think she ever realized he was trying. He took twice as many classes as he had took last year, hoping to reach her level just to have the privileged of competing with her. He would never admit to it, but she taught him that some things had to be fought for as not everything could be handed to him on a silver platter. But old habits die hard, and there are times when he'd let the house elves pamper him as his parents used to. He surely missed them so. He just hopes they'll be home for Christmas.Â
With Lily, he was never sure why he was so hell-bent on changing his old, teenage-boy habits. He obviously had no chance, and it wasn't like Lily was actually giving him a checklist. After a while, turning over a new leaf did not only mean proving himself to Lily, or to anyone else for that matter. Now, it was whether or not he could exceed his own expectations and push past his limits. He was going to prove to himself that he could make a difference, and he wasn't going to give up until he felt the fulfillment her deserved.Â
Friends... He laughed. "Really, now? I hadn't noticed," he commented sarcastically. "Could you reiterate a few of your profanities--I mean, names?" He grinned. He actually missed their lively debates and fiery arguments. It was the only time James had ever felt like she actually cared about what he had to say. If she really was indifferent as she claimed she was, she wouldn't have bothered to give him the time of day. It was what kept him going all these years before he finally decided to give his heart a break and spare it of the pain of any more rejections. He quickly stopped asking her to Hogsmede.
"Potions! I almost forgot I was taking Potions as well as DADA," he laughed at the acronym. He glanced at her as he surveyed the tower. "It's all your fault, Evans. If you hadn't distracted me with your new-found sense of humor, it wouldn't have slipped my mind." He kept walking as he craned his ears for any peculiar noises. He'd protect her from anything. He'd sacrifice anything for her. "You're the brightest witch of our time, Lils. I'd be shocked if you didn't take as much classes as you did. You're too bloody brilliant for your own good."
