i love dennis cooper because he's like those fandom bloggers who make truly depraved hardcore kidnapping fanfic about generic white boy blorbos but he's 73
Im tired of not speaking my truth to stay uncouth. We simply must torture The Character in perverse and cruel ways for my enjoyment and pleasure. Guards begin
while i'm v excited for season 3 the way they're flattening out gabrielle is already setting my teeth on edge
there are a lot of things iwtv and now tvl do with the explicitization of incest dynamics between louis/claudia and lestat/gabrielle that i understand make for better television. but it grates on me that they've simplified them in doing so, since what i really enjoy about a lot of these character dynamics is how insidious and relatively subtle they are in the text.
lestat doesn't think of his relationship with his mother as incest because he is unable to untangle her complicity in his father's violent abuse of him via her passivity because he understands her as a victim of him as well, and is deputized as a replacement husband because he is her favorite and the son theough which she lives vicariously, which he sees as his duty.
meanwhile, claudia sees louis as her lover because he is fulfilling her needs as a caretaker while also desperately missing lestat and the surety (of misery) that he brought louis. she is using him in a caluculated manner because she knows he cannot leave her due to his guilt, and their relationship, while visually a father/daughter one, takes on more of a husband/wife dynamic as she takes the reins of their search for answers.
as much as i, as a pervert, usually love the explicit sex elements being brought to the screen, having claudia's rape (emotionally a pediphilic assault from both louis and lestat) literalized via the bruce assault and lestat's incest explicitized via classic heterosexual penetrative sex with his mother waters down the canon stickiness that can't be shaken off, cannot even be addressed- the gothic narrative that festers and rots.
i also feel this way about how lestat becomes a completely different character from his book persona after his violent assault on louis in episode 5, because the exaggerated violence flattens out a lot of what i love about the toxic nature of louis and lestat. i'm left worrying that lestat, who is canonically a rapist in a way that is repeatedly disavowed by fans despite being very consistent with his character, has been smoothed out in one direction to add the incorrect depth to another facet of his character.
the canon evils of all these things go bone deep, and i worry that these exaggerations are emphasizing things in the fear of them not being "bad enough" already. i was looking forward to an exploration of them because the justifications/rationalizations of the characters are so much of what i love about the books. i enjoy the tv adaptation a lot- it solves a lot of the plot difficulties that anne's books bring to the table- but i worry that something important is lost in translation. maybe this is the necessary trade off to making the sex less metaphorical and more literal?
also. where the fuck are gabrielle's fatigues and dusty ass safari clothes and tuxedo and braid and girlfriend(s).
