How young people can improve their carbon footprint
In this day and age, the need to inform young people about climate change has never been greater, it’s their future that will be impacted and we need to give them the adequate tools prepare foe. a cleaner and brighter future.Â
One of the ways that they are tackling this is by targeting schools as they have the highest percentage of young people. The sustainable development commissions did a report on schools around the country and discovered the carbon footprint is at an all-time high, standing at 9.4 million tonnes of greenhouses gases every year due to the heat and power used in a school from the buildings plus you got to take in the staff and pupil travel , the general waste etc. With that in mind, most schools are open to go through and make changes to help reduce their overall footprint by following certain practices that have been installed.Â
Certain, methods that the schools can follow are making sure that the building has efficient insulation which will be a big help as it helps saves costs on heating and provides a more robust way of keeping the heat in, also having energy-saving lightbulbs will be a big help as lowers the high electricity bills.Â
As well as schools, the local authorities are also getting involved in providing a level of support by developing safer roads to encourage more people to walk and cycle, with the addition of bike racks.Â
Another thing that can be taken to consideration is the minimize of food waste as public schools produce around 1.9 % of waste within the UK so the best way to combat this is by introducing compost bins and green waste stations to reduce the amount of waste used.Â
In this modern era, young people are more aware of the world around them, with the power of technology it’s allowed them to gain a better understating of the world. With an increase in awareness of global warming heating up (if you pardon the terrible pun ), it’s crucial that young people get a better understand the little changes that can be made that will make a huge difference in the long run.Â
So with that in mind here are the few ways that young people can change one step at a time :
- When looking for clothes look for products that have been made with the environment in mind, always look for labels which have a green label.Â
The most obvious one is buying things that have a fair-trade logo as it helps farmers gain a fair price on their product making sure that they don’t get left out.
Keep things local, being able to buy locally sourced food is a great way of keeping air miles down and carbon emissions, and supporting your local business is such a help because you'll be able to build their business. Â
