hello,fucker,stop being fucking good,your one-upping the Cosmic Stars,god helg og god tur,Mystery
How many of you are there wtf????
Hey can youā-Oh wait, wrong place
How did you find my DND blog????
This steampunk clock writes the time every minute, and erases it before writing again.
This is the most ridiculous, inefficient, and needlessly complicated thingā¦..
I know. It seems almost completely unwieldy and useless.
I want it.
okay, but this is really what a Steampunk watch should be. Not just a dial watch with a cover made of bits of brass and copper.
Itās such a shame that so many people forget that the -punk suffix on cyberpunk and solarpunk referred to anarchism and/or anti-capitalism and itās not just, like, -stuck but for alternate history
Also steampunk although nobody EVER knew what the punk meant there
Steampunk has never been punk. Itās just āwouldnāt it be nice if I was a rich victorian capalist and aristocrat but also with access to a doomsday machine.ā
Steampunk was a complex movement centered around proving how the problem wasnāt technology but social customs that kept us divided. Most optimistic steampunk fiction that occurs in a high science fiction setting is either idealized (full automation) and/or an actual commentary on capitalism and classism.
People like to dress up and use the aesthetic because they enjoy it, and as of yet there is no other word (to my knowledge) for the aesthetic side of it.
Also, steampunk has a lot of branches/derivatives as well. In dieselpunk, the focus is on limited resources and the futility of fossil fuels (think of the video game Frostpunk). Atompunk is all about humanityās doomed obsession with nuclear energy and weaponry (the entire Fallout series). Stitchpunk is just meant to be pretty plainly creepy and dark, bridging the old-fashioned with the modern to create Things That Should Not For The Love of God Exist (Coraline, 9, Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands) in the eyes of society and then going on to either use that instinctual revulsion as a symbol of evil or to smash down the consumerās prejudices about the character/item.
Punk addressed more topics than just anarchism and anti-capitalism. It also tackled prejudice, classism, human arrogance, etc..
punk is also an angry retort to current norms. itās not a coincidence that steampunk took off in the 00ā²s, when the digital age was closing in around us and all of our consumer electronics got harder to understand and even more boring to look at. technology did more for us than ever, but it was an awful combination of cheaply made and expensive to purchase, you couldnāt build it or repair it or save it or even understand it, and it generally looked like a sleek plastic block. the iraq war was going on, scientists were starting to scream about global warming, everyone wanted to suck appleās slick white dongle,Ā the new century was fucking terrifying. everything was hot and loud and cheap and plastic and scary and oversimplified ultrasleek ugly and new, new, new!Ā
steampunk borrows imperial aesthetics, and thatās a shame, but itās specifically a romantic escape from the new millenniumās minimalism and consumerism, as well as an interrogation of the class divides any imperial power maintains within itself and the nature of consumption itself. Ā people, machines, money, dreams.Ā
thereās a reason gears became the central symbol of the genre, aside from looking cool: we wanted authentic interiority, as everything around us turned digital. we wanted authenticity. we wanted machines we could take apart and touch, and we wanted beauty. we wantedĀ machines made of iron and wood that you could fix with a wrench, lush costumes with layers of embroidery, the promise of freedom and adventure on your airship while you looked dope as shit in your fancy corset.Ā
steampunk was only as shallow as the aesthetic slap-a-cog on it edges appeared. the center of it was punk.Ā
Thereās also a growing movement within steampunk to reject the more overt symbols of imperialism (like refusing/rejecting incorporating things like pith helmets) and make it more accessible/welcoming to a wider variety of people by boosting marginalized voices in the community
I recommend watching the documentary āvintage tomorrowsā about steampunk and what makes it punk.

historical padlocks are just great
the town crier finds me sleeping on my doorstep bc drunk me last night couldnāt open the lock on my door and announces my buffoonery to the whole square

Punk addressed more topics than just anarchism and anti-capitalism. It also tackled prejudice, classism, human arrogance, etc..
Also, steampunks totally confront on many of the problems with imperialism and industrialization. Yes, thereās a lot of āVictorian mad scientist/aristocratā going on, complete with a British Empire ruling most of the world, but thatās because the real British Empire is one of the most glaring examples from history of imperialism being a huge, global problem. Iāll grant that a lot of people are just in it for the style, but thatās true of any cultural phenomenon. Most of the steampunk novels, music, games, and other media I see canāt help but starkly illustrate how ridiculous, unjust, and unsustainable such empires are, which in turn provides reflective commentary on modern real-world imperialism and how bad it is.
Steampunk is odd among punk movements in that most peopleās first exposure to it is the style, not the subversive music like classic punk, or the speculative literature and film of cyberpunk, or the activist push of solarpunk. So itās a movement that has to teach people as they get deeper into what it means. Itās babyās first punk movement for a lot of people. It starts with people enjoying the style, but the more theyāre exposed to it, the more they want to riot against the establishment just as hard as other punks.

I wanna hear these Opinions on steampunk color palettes, if youāre willing.
tbh āthe Victorians did not go to the trouble of inventing aniline dyes so that we could wear neutralsā mostly covers it?
they went to a lot of effort to bring affordable screaming bright fuchsias and acid greens into the world, and we should honor their tacky, tacky choices.
letās not forget the tacky patterns, too
oh yeah
oh fuck yeah
(TELL ME that last one isnāt a steampunk look. just try and tell me)
yes! thank you, these are EXACTLY what i meant. tomorrow Iāll take a picture of the bafflingly tacky goldenrod-and-maroon gown Iāve got at the shop
also
this is wise, and correct.
oh, Iām going all heart eyes just at the description.Ā

So I have been working on this small 5e expansion for a few days. It contains 9 new constructs, a new race, a Cleric Domain and 6 magic items/artifacts. I really hope you like it and I tried really hard to make it relatively detailed.
Remember, if you want to use any of this in your game, remember to ask your DM first and give credit to the creator. Anyway I might not be able to post anything tomorrow as I have a game to host and need to think of some ideas for more Homebrew. There was originally a front cover for this small book but Tumblr wouldnāt let me post it because no more than 10 images. Iāll post the download link for this tomorrow :) Thatās all from me today, peace. Actually, here is the link. The website allows you to download the PDF version of it. Where it says Destination, click Save as PDF. Then inĀ āMore Settingsā change the paper size toĀ āLetterā to remove the white strip of paper at the bottom :) https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/BkrdZu_aV
TimePunk/PunkPunk: The Textening
Been largely absent from this blog this year, so of course I figured Iād make it up to you with two extremely long text posts two days in a row. Love you all!
This is theĀ Timepunk/Punk Punk post from 2015 updated for 2018, in a format you can copy/paste, and accessible to screen readers. Added a few more *punks and clarified a few more definitions. (Feel free to message me if you know of a *punk not on the list.)
Timepunk:Ā Advanced technologies develop in a historical (or future) period, which changes the associated society, fashion, and magic. TVTropes explanation: Either exchanges the basic technology for that of another historical period or mixes in another genre.
These are not definitions or in-depth in any way. I describe each with associations and imagery, as Iāve found these to be useful shorthand for explaining to strangers and newbies. I tried to make sure each punk had more than one discussion or labeled work online (otherwise the list would expand to include every silly discussion thread on the internet).
Note: none of these have much to do with 1960s-70s Punk music culture, other than some possible overlapping anti-authoritarian themes. These genres are derivatives of steampunk, which arose from cyberpunk.
stonepunk: Prehistoric, Neolithic, Stone Age
bronzepunk: Bronze Age, Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Mediterranean
sandalpunk, classicpunk, ironpunk, togapunk: Iron Age, Classical antiquity, Greece, Roman Empire, Atlantis, Antikythera mechanism

Cassette Futurism, formicapunk: late 20th century analog technology, VHS, cassettes, primitive digital, 8-bit, no internet or cellphones, The Fifth Element, Max Headroom
gothicpunk, cybernoir: post-modern, dystopian, goth and punk fusion, old World of Darkness, The Crow
cyberpunk: cyberspace, cyborgs, dystopia, Blade Runner, Neuromancer, the street finds its uses for technology

post-apocalyptic, apunkalypse, wasteland: survivalist, Mad Max, Burning Man, Fallout, west coast tribal
junkpunk: post-apocalyptic using trash and repurposed scrap for material
Geographic punk: These punks are also about advanced technologies developing in a historical society, but are based on geography and culture rather than time. So the time period and technology can range anywhere from bronzepunk to cyberpunk, though steampunk is often the springboard.
silkpunk: Silk Road, classical Chinese antiquity, Ken Liu
bamboopunk, ricepunk: East and South Asia
jadepunk: East Asia, wuxia, mystical jade tech (sometimes mystical aether tech)

capepunk: superhero fiction deconstructing (or reconstructing) superheroism in a ārealisticā manner
feltpunk: humans and muppets live side by side (in a dystopia?), Greg the Bunny, The Muppet Show
dreampunk: overarching meta-punk examining or rewriting history to address oppression, human rights, and environmental issues, or creating new myths to address the same. Employs dream logic. Draws on other *punk genres for material and influence.
nowpunk: contemporary literature. Yes, it was coined as a joke.
