Alright, here is what Aranessa has so far CANONICALLY done:
Married Thjazi Fang, someone with a moral code so strong he led a rebellion against all noble houses, including hers. Despite their separation, they both deeply loved each other and valued their marriage over the years.
Spent a whole day waiting for an audience with the Photarch after riding what must have been EXTREMELY far ahead of her caravan to reach Dol-Makjar in time to do so, to beg for her husband's life.
Openly grieved and attended her husband's funeral. Expressed regret with not going with him when he asked, AFTER his rebellion had already failed due to the actions of Julien, who she is obviously very close to, meaning he did not find her at fault for what happened.
Has been nothing but kind and cordial with her husband's family, who have acted the same with her.
Asked Julien to bring Occtis to the Davinos palace for two known reasons: she felt that the fact his family was looking for him so hard was suspect and that he might have insight as to what is going on with the Sundered Houses and more importantly his family. Both reasons are absolutely good ones.
Was nearly killed in the subsequent attack and did everything in her power to fight against the Tachonis forces and help her allies to escape.
Has expressed a sense of betrayal with the other Sundered Houses, whom she was raised all her life to consider peers and allies, only to have her family and her vassels be slaughtered by a yet unknown conspiracy of them, and be hit with the realization that people she thought of as peers might have not considered herself as one.
Be fucking traumatized by the destruction of all she has loved in a short 48 hour period.
Despite the trauma, has adjusted to life on the run as best as possible and rarely complains beyond some jokes she has made about the situation which were more a general "yeah this really sucks, oh well".
Asked the Seekers for their help getting her trapped men at arms and servants from the Einfasen. Expressed that she did not want to stop Thaisha from reaching Alogar quickly, but that she felt it was her duty to these people to not leave them to rot in a dungeon if she could.
Was kind to Occtis without need or audience, playing music in order to comfort him after he discovered he could no longer eat, and reassuring him she did not hold him accountable for his family's actions and that she did not judge him for his new undead state.
Openly refers to Thaisha as her sister by marriage and seems to value that relationship, which Thaisha also seems to do.
Tries her best with Vaelus, despite some awkwardness, partially because Vaelus did gate crash her beloved husbands funeral to accuse him of stealing (he did, but HEY).
Has a close bond with Julien and is his childhood friend on top of being his liege lady. This dynamic is one of her worst sins, apparently, as it "holds Julien back from connecting to the others", despite the fact that he seems to be developing different raports with the others, biggest thing obviously holding him back being his own shitty personality and recent trauma.
Suggested that Julien and Occtis meet with Lord Einfasen in order to try and suss out what was going on. All she really thought she might get out of it is a possible way to release her people without having to resort to breaking them out (which likely would end with a lot of deaths) or leaving them. She also hopes they may have a tentative ally in another Sundered House or at least prevent Einfasen from becoming an ally of Tachonis. Expresses a healthy distrust of Einfasen regardless. Is probably not aware of the Einfasen move to take over the Revolutionary Guard as far as we know, as it never came up during any interactions with Azune, and she had only been in the city a few days.
Has the same voice as a villain from a D20 series, which just happens to be Brennan's normal voice. Apparently, despite the fact that many of his other villains have pronounced accents and/or character voices, this is a sign she is evil.
I mean, really, where is this 'Aranessa is not who she seems/secretly evil' thing coming from? Textually. Where is it coming from within the canon itself?
A lot of people say they want this because it would be a huge blow for Julien, something to push his narrative along. To this, I say: "We've already gotten that." The attack of Palazzo Davinos, murder of his father, possible murder of his mother and sister, murder of his friends/partners, and subsequent uprooting of everything he thought he knew about the world and his place in it. Why do we need more? Why does Aranessa need to be evil? Is this not enough for Matt and Brennan to weave a compelling narrative? We haven't even really gotten to sit with this vehicle of character development for him for more than an episode and MAYBE a half (if you add in the various cold-opens), and already people think it isn't happening fast enough? Aranessa also needs to be written off somehow for his story?
The only value some people seem to be placing on Aranessa Royce is how she might move Julien's story further, which sucks because she is and can be so much more than that.
