Movement caught Osbert's eye while he held his friend steady over the bucket. "I don't think I can do this," said a familiarly accented voice. "It's just breaking fast." Rena and Finan had their heads together on the other side of a hay pile. Osbert resisted his instinct to wave them over. If he did so he would certainly shove the bucket of mess into Bragi's face and make things way worse. "It isn't just breakfast. Two weeks on the road and I finally got them to like me and now all I'll be is the woman fucking their commander!" There was a brief silence as they all listened to poor Bragi heave into the bucket, but it was unclear if Rena and Finan realized there was someone not heaving their guts listening in to their conversation. Osbert heard a a deep chuckle, "Well, I don't know if 'like'is what is call it..." "You're right," Rena agreed. "They tolerate me at best-" "Lorena." 'Oh, serious voice then.' "Finan." Osbert barely covered his mouth in time to muffle his laughter. He had never heard her sound so comically anguished before.

When they first got the news that Bill Frasier of all people would be their commanding officer during their French summer, he and the others didn't know how command would suit him. "Be nice," someone had called out from the back, when Bill stepped before them in the mess tent some weeks ago. "It's his first time!" The wolf-whistling and sniggers came right after but Bill didn't take the bait, only rolled his eyes and carried on with the mission briefing through a barely suppressed smirk. Jock respected him, not only because he wasn't the type to stay at camp while the rest of them raced about the countryside, blowing up as much as they could, but because he knew that beneath his curmudgeonly exterior, he was just as mad as the rest of them. Anyone else would think him mad for ordering four railway sabotage missions in less than a week.
