I noticed how a car slowed down and pulled to a stop in front of us. I then watched a man step out. He was tall and tan, with short silver hair and mysterious purple eyes- I knew they were colored contacts. The style of makeup surrounding his eyes captured my attention.

Those features were recognizable to me; I knew him from the recent past. He went by the name Reign, which should be self-explanatory of his personality.

Not wanting to engage in social interaction, I hopped off the top of my car and stepped away towards the back. I kept my back to him as an indication of my lingering bitterness.

How long does it take to resurrect someone?

What resources are needed to pull it off? 

Can any dead thing be resurrected? Can certain things such as being in an advanced state of decay prevent someone from being brought back to life?

How are resurrected people different from those who have never died? What lasting consequences did death have on their physical and mental wellbeing?

Can people who have been resurrected remember the afterlife? If so, how clear are those memories? Do different people’s experiences of the afterlife contradict each other?

Are resurrected people discriminated against in any way?

How can you tell someone who has been resurrected from someone who has never died?

Can you be resurrected more than once? What determines how many times someone can be resurrected?

How does the ability to resurrect people shape how individuals and society view death? Is it seen as less serious? What consequences does this have (e.g. less strict safety regulations, less investment in healthcare)?

Can individual organs that have stopped functioning be brought back into a functioning state, or does resurrection only work on a whole body scale?

Why do readers get bored or stop reading?

There are several reasons, but the easiest to fix are conflict and tension.

In this article I’m going to suggest some clear and easy guidelines that will help you increase the tension and conflict in your novel.

First, a quick and useful definition of the terms:

Conflict = what DOES happen.

Tension = what COULD happen.

How did they get their powers? How old were they when they got them?

How long did it take them to master their powers? Are their certain abilities they’ve had longer or learned to use better than others?

What can make them temporarily lose control of their powers?

Are their powers tied to their emotions?

What drawbacks do their powers have? How do they try to counteract these?

Do they have a secret identity? If so, who knows the truth?

How common are super heroes in this setting? How are they generally viewed by society? What unique laws are in place to try to control them?

Are superpowers hereditary?

What is their relationship with law enforcement?

What do their costumes look like? Do they favor practicality or aesthetics more?

Do they have a sidekick? How long have they been together? What might motivate them to part ways?

How likely are they to try and reform villains?

Have they ever needed to be saved by anyone?

How do they view the average civilian? Do they tend to form close relationships with members of the general populace?

How much do they enjoy being in the spotlight?
