“I love you very much,” Miranda said quietly.
Andy’s heart stopped. The words rang through her head for a moment, and she wondered if she’d imagined them; then she pulled back just enough to look at Miranda’s face, and knew she hadn’t…

“I think people are aware, now, of a power imbalance, and it’s something that leads to abuse. It’s led to abuse in our own industry, and it’s led to abuse across the domestic workers’ field of work. It’s in the military, it’s in Congress, it’s everywhere. And we want to fix that. And we feel sort of emboldened in this particular moment to stand together in a thick black line dividing then from now.”

This scene had me dropping my jaw. Can we talk about how brave this film is for having Carol give up shared custody? While being a mother is an important part of her, it is certainly not the only or main part. She has her own dreams, desires and needs. It’s so rare that a female character who is a mother is presented in such a well-rounded way. Not only does she have her own needs, but she actually puts them first. Yes, a mother puts herself first. Do you realize how fucking brave it is to show that? Women get so much bullshit for still fulfilling their own needs when they’re mothers – especially when they stand in conflict with their child’s needs – but this film shows that children aren’t the only important thing in a woman’s life. On top of that it realizes that an unhappy and repressed mother will not be able to raise a happy and free child. So Carol ends this charade so that she, and thereby also her daughter, can be happy. I have never seen something like this. The more I think about this film, the more it has me in awe. It is such a masterpiece in so many ways.
this remains and will remain to be the most iconic monologue in cinematic history
