âWell, when you put it like that,â Sam couldnât help but smile a little. While the people of Bon Temps had encountered plenty of unusual happenings, the public existence of vampires was more than enough for them to handle. The few who knew about Sam had never initially taken the revelation well. But the more he thought about it, and the way Fred laid it out so plainly, he couldnât understand why heâd hesitated so much. If anyone might understand, itâd be her. âNo, no, Iâm not eatinâ people,â he couldnât help but laugh. Why was that her first assumption? Did he seem like the type? He wasnât going to think too hard on that one. âNo, I, uh, Iâm what they call a shifter,â he said pausing a moment. Heâd never just come out and said it before and while he hoped sheâd understand, he was still nervous, âa shapeshifter.â
âWell thatâs a relief,â she laughed with him, hoping the humor would defuse his obvious nerves at least a little. Whatever it was he was about to tell her was clearly important and she wanted to treat it as such. Except when he said âshapeshifterâ her initial thought was Sam is a pyramid and she barely contained the snort that followed. Slapping her hands over her mouth to physically contain any more giggles, she quickly apologized, âsorry, triangles is all I had in my head and while that would be interestinâ, I take it you donât turn into actual shapes and itâs far less literal than that?â Fred started going through her internal rolodex of things mystical and mysterious to pinpoint if sheâd heard of anything like what heâd said, âif you meant werewolf would you have said werewolf? Or is that not okay to say, is that derogatory?â
