Past hurt...We're still together

Childhood trauma has given me the gift of adult scar tissue. Forgiveness ain't cheap, and it don't come easy. But I recognize that I need it..To be a balm on these wounds I carry. Something needs to heal them, but I keep picking at the wound. Constantly declaring I'm not defined by my past, when in reality I'm designed by it. Sewn together with rejection, layered with doubt... dressed for failure. I need to let it go, but it won't let go of me. I want to be free of it, but if I let it go what will I have ? It keeps me company, gives me conversation, lulls me into a bad nights sleep. Without it I have no more excuses. I'd have to be ME. That alone scares me into submission.
