Floric: An orientation characterized by being a nonwoman attracted to, loving, or desiring/having relationships with other nonwomen. It encompasses gay men (cis and trans, binary and nonbinary), other mlm, and several nblm, nblnb and mlnb identities (depending on the nonbinary individual’s personal identity and relation to (non)womanhood).
It can be used as a counterpart to lesbian, in any way lesbian is used- it can be used a shorthand for “gay men” (though this is reductive), it can be used as an umbrella term, it can be used to mean nonwomen who prioritize their attraction to nonwomen, etc.
It explicitly includes nonbinary folks of any alignment (as long as they identify as a nonwoman to some degree), oriented/angled aroaces, varioriented, aspec and mspec folks.
The flag and some of the stripe meanings are inspired by the most commonly used lesbian flag as of 2019 and its 5-stripe variation, following the widespread knowledge that the “lipstick” flag, its meaning, and its creator are all hot garbage. Here are the stripe meanings!
Jade green: peace and serenity
Spring green: community and support
Aquamarine: independence and freedom
White: non-cis, non-perisex, and gender non-conforming florics
Moonstone: art and magic (from the rainbow flag)
Verdigris: love and trust
Lapis: attraction and intimacy
Etymology: just as lesbian is named after Lesbos, birthplace of Sappho, Floric is named after Florence, birthplace of Leonardo Da Vinci, who is the namesake for the most popular alternative to achillean- vincian.
Personal ramblings: I am floric. I like that it rhymes with toric, which describes a large subcommunity of floric! I think this term might bother some folks just because it’s a counterpart to lesbian. However, I know this is just because lesbian is one of the oldest and most prominent identities in the LGBTQ+ community- hell, it’s the first letter. Some folks might think that some neolabel can’t stand up to a term with that much history, but I want them to know that I don’t expect this term to suddenly be used as commonly as lesbian is- I want it to grow organically, and I know it’ll never be as well-known or respected, but I think it’s still important to have. It feels right, it makes me feel whole, and you can’t deny that the community exists- because it already does.
