as a foundation, you need to understand how anxiety works in your brain and body. fear is a response hard wired in our brains to keep us alive. back before modernization, we would have this feeling if we encountered a bear in the woods for example. our hearts would race and we would feel short of breath. but now, there is no bear chasing after us. so our brains kick into a survival state over something as small as driving to work.

the issues arises when we start to fear the sensations that our body creates when we are afraid:

“my heart is racing out of control, i must go check with a doctor”.

the doctors conclude nothing is wrong but you’re never satisfied. you ruminate, google, and search for remedies to no avail.

but your fear response is there to help you SURVIVE. your fear response is NECESSARY and beneficial for you.

your issue is NOT fear itself, it is your RESPONSE to your own fear that is keeping you stuck in a cycle.

to break free from the cycle is probably the simplest, yet most counter-intuitive answer possible. literally face your fears.

i was terrified of driving. every time i walked to my car the terrible thoughts and sensations would amplify. i had to shift my perspective from “i am too scared to drive” to “i am going to get myself from point a to point b no matter how i feel.”

the method we used when faced with anxiety symptoms is A.L.A.R.M.

Acknowledge the symptom

Label it as anxiety

Accept that it’s there

Refocus on your task

Move on with your day

perfecting this mindset takes LOTS of time and practice but it is not impossible. i had days in a row I thought i was back to normal only to be hit in the face with an array of scary feelings the next day. it is part of the journey as your body is healing itself from its own sensitized nerves.

it was the hardest yet most rewarding thing i’ve ever done. and i know a lot of you in this community struggle with mental health as well. idc who you are (as long as you’re 18+), i encourage you to reach out to me if you need support with your anxiety. whether it be asks, anons, or dms (dm @pra1riepiggy because my messages here got nuked) i have so much learned experience, tips, and resources to share with you all.
