Some people will talk about how much they love fanfic and then completely fail to read incomplete works and comment on those incomplete fics. Half of the time I only complete fics because of comments, even just the simplest “loving this” motivates me more than any hits ever could. If you’re not actively reading incomplete works you are part of the problem we’re seeing with a lack of completed works. Unlike some people I am judging you. I don’t think you care about the longevity of fanfic, nor do I think you care about fanfic as a medium or as a community. Fanfic is a way of engaging with a group of people with common interests if those writers aren’t experiencing that engagement they’re going to assume that their content isn’t wanted. Fic writers are putting in hours of their life for free, for you, you can’t give them 20 minutes of your time once in a while as thanks. The fact of the matter is not reading incomplete works harms fanfic. It’s not hard to take 2 seconds to leave a comment.

“Oh but I’ve read fics that never got completed.” And it was free. You’ll get over it. There’s no joy quite like getting an email from a long time abandoned fic being updated after you commented on it. Engage with fanfic because that’s how fanfic comes about.
