Udaipur city is about 21 kms from the Maharana Pratap airport on the highway to New Delhi. It is a typical Indian road – a mix of the good and the bad, smooth and bumpy. Our driver showed us the Hindustan Zinc factory on the left and the Udaipur 1st gate on the right as we were moving. The traffic movement was also homely – free for all at the junctions.
The city is famous for the lakes and the monumental buildings within and around the lakes. Most of them are hotels and restaurants now.The following is not in any order of priority.
Lake Fateh Sagar and the surroundings.
Maharana Pratap Memorial is on a hill top on the Fateh Sagar lake road. There are good view points overlooking the “white city”.
There is a vintage and classic collection of cars.
Dudh Talal is a small lake close to the lake Pichola. M.L.Verma garden is adjacent. There is a Karni mata temple on a hill. There is a ropeway cable car connection to the hill top.
Lake Pichola is probably the star lake with the star hotels.
The Jag Mandir is not a temple. It is a restaurant on an island in the lake.
The Taj lake palace hotel is also there.
The Oberoi hotels can also be seen.
But without doubt the super star attraction is the city palace.
The city palace complex has a residential quarters prohibited for views. The descendants of the princely family reside there. Then there is a 5 star hotel run by HRH -Historic Resort Hotels – Shiv Niwas. The city palace museum is where the tourists throng. This whole complex is still controlled by the former ruler’s family. The complex as seen from the water front.
The museum has a lot of interesting stuff to see.
The royals had a good view of the city and also the lake.
Theme weddings also happen here.
The current descendants live in this.
Sahelion ki bari is the garden of the maidens.
Of course there are other beautiful places missed in this short account.
There are some general tips. Ola cabs are very useful to move around. But the lanes around the city palace complex are very narrow and autos or walking around could save more time. We travel mostly on general holidays. The traffic congestion in the narrow roads could be testing.
