For old times sake is actually such a heartbreaking and beautiful sentiment. Like, letâs do it for the love that used to be here. It is reason enough.

character development: the sky and the sea
@writinghaven on instagram || no reposts!!
A few of you have been asking me how I write character development, and as someone who primarily writes angst, hereâs me trying my best to explain an arc I call âthe sky and the sea.â
âââââââââââ-
Letâs say you have a character who loves the night sky. They are enchanted by its beauty and itâs something that keeps them going. When theyâre having a tough time, they drive alone at night or step out onto their balcony to stargaze, yearning for this distant paradise. Itâs something so farâso unattainable but theyâre willing to build a mountain stone by stone just to touch the stars. Â
And perhaps they might.
Daedalus and Icarus: a father and son who longed to escape from the island of Crete and thus constructed wings held together by wax. Itâs a famous tale, one that many know results in Icarusâ fall after flying too close to the sun.
After yearning for so long, your character acts. They reach for the heavensâfor the stars. Time slows and while the earth may turn for others, they alone stand still.
Thereâs a warmth that stretches across the infinite horizon as their anticipation grows, ever so close to being able to feel its pulseâto being able to hear the universe breathe.
Then you take it all away.
How do you hurt someone? Death hurts. Destruction hurts. But whatâs truly being lost? A life? A place that was once called home? Or is the thing that truly hurts the most the fact that you will never ever see something again no matter what you do and no matter how hard you try?
So donât take away the stars. Donât just make the universe cease to exist. Let them never see it again. Make them know that itâs there. Itâs there the same as ever, as lovely as ever, but itâs not for them.
Make them blind.
And as Icarus fell, wings burning and crying from agony and regret, the waves reached up and he crashed into the sea.
Itâs dark. Itâs heavy and they donât know if whatâs covering them is a consoling blanket or the weight of the entire sky. They drift aimlessly, sightless eyes burning from the occasional, pointless struggle against the churning saline.
But there are different nights. There are nights when the sea is stillâ when it feels like more of a cradle and less of a rollercoaster. And these are the nights when they truly feel what it is to be human. When they truly understand that passion and perseverance are things that are not only present at the peaks of mountains, but also at the deepest of trenches.
It may be different. It may feel hopeless but no matter what, there this always another way. They may not be able to see, but they can feel. They can feel the wind as it courses through their tangled hair. They can feel the warmth of the sun against their scarring skin. They can hear the overlapping cries of seagulls reminding them that they are not alone and that they are getting closer to shore.
And one day, it may be in days, weeks, or even months, they will touch the sandâthey will land ashore. The grains will trickle down their legs as they slowly stand and some may stick to their cheek after attempting to wipe the tears from their eyes.
Theyâve learned something. Yes, the sky is no longer theirs to see, but there is something just as beautiful. There is something beautiful in the way the sea breathes. There is something safe in the steady, constant beating of the waves against the shore. And perhaps the uncountable grains of sand are enough to make up for the infinite amount of stars because how much can a human count in their lifetime?
Yes, the sand will hurt a bit when it first rubs against their uncallused feet, but the pain will go away. Itâll fade in time as the scars form and as your character runs towards the warmth, against the wind, to the sea, or simply wherever they please.
Life hurts. Existing hurts and things may not always work out for us, but as we grow, we keep pushing. Weâll keep growing and perhaps one day weâll realize that there was something different, but just as beautiful as what we wanted all alongâand all we had to do was close our eyes.
Authorâs Note:Â
I hope that made sense to you guys :P Please donât take this as a message that âyou should all give up on your dreamsâ or something, keep aiming high! Donât be afraid to reach for the stars because if you end up making it, thatâs awesome. If you donât, it may be hard for some time, but the waves will catch you and drift you back ashore :)
Character Development: The Sky and The Sea
@writinghaven on instagram || no reposts!!
Intro: A few of you have been asking me how I write character relationships and character development. As some of you know, I often view my characters as elements. For example in a relationship dynamic, I see them as fire and broken glass, smoke and rain, etc.Â
Just a heads up, what Iâm about to write isnât all there is to know about character development, itâs just part of my personal thought process (and itâs basically an extended metaphor). So letâs cut to the chase! Hereâs one of the numerous character arcs I enjoy writing and this one is called âThe Sky and The Sea."Â
The SkyÂ
Letâs say you have a character who loves the night sky. They are enchanted by its beauty and itâs something that keeps them going. When theyâre having a tough time, they drive alone at night or step out onto their balcony to stargaze, yearning for this distant paradise.Â
Now keep in mind that you donât have to think about this literally. Perhaps for your character, their "night skyâ is a dream job, an ideal relationship, or a successful revolution. Just like the night sky, they love the idea of this thing, as huge and unattainable as it may seem.Â
The ReachÂ
Daedalus and Icarus: a father and son who longed to escape from the island of Crete and thus constructed wings held together by wax. Iâm sure many of you know this story, but for those of you who donât, Icarus ultimately ended up flying too close to the sun, causing the wax on his wings to melt.Â
After yearning for so long, your character reaches for this unattainable dream. They reach for the heavens, they reach for the stars. They feel like theyâre so close, like the threads of the constellations are weaving between their fingertips.Â
This is when you take it all away. As Icarus âstretched out his arms to the sky and made towards the highest heavens,â he found the scalding heat standing between him and what he soughtâan undefeatable foe that led to his downfall.Â
The Fall
Falling. The painful feeling in your characterâs chest as the thing they desired most slips away and soon is nothing but a speck in the distance.
The feeling when they realize that this ânight skyâ they have loved for so long is truly unattainable and ended up bringing nothing but pain.Â
The feeling when they lose themselves because they feel like theyâve lost their purpose.
Then they plunge into the depths of the sea.Â
The Sea
Your character sinks beneath the tides, a hand weakly extended towards the fading moonlight that shines through the water. They donât know how long they spend suspended in silence.Â
Then something compels them. It may be a friend, a pet, a lover, a hobby, or simply the will to survive. Something urges them to rise. They push through the water, not searching for the light of the night sky, but rather to breatheâto exist. To be liberated from this heavy feeling.Â
They breach the surface and inhale deeply, as if breathing for the very first time. As they gaze out at the water, they feel untouched by the waves.Â
The night sky shines above them, but they no longer look up. They gaze out at the ocean. Yes, itâs wild and unpredictable, but itâs beautiful. The ocean seems to reflect the heavens so perfectly, every single star concealed between the waves.Â
Your character is filled with nostalgia. Do they have regrets? Yes, some, but thatâs normal. Their eyes travel softly over the sea as it reflects what they had once most desired and they realize that perhaps they had a night sky of their own right in front of them this whole time. Itâs not perfect, and it will never be, but itâs enough. Itâs enough to keep them from succumbing to the depths once more. Itâs enough to keep them afloat. In time, they will learn to see its beauty, even on cloudy nights when the starsâ reflections arenât seen. They will heal, then they will grow.Â
Authorâs Note:Â
I hope that made sense to you guys :P Please donât take this as a message that âyou should all give up on your dreamsâ or something, keep aiming high! Donât be afraid to reach for the stars because if you end up making it, thatâs awesome. If you donât, it may be hard for some time, but the waves will catch you and drift you back to shore :)

[CW// foul language, high intensity emotions, shaming, humiliation, suicide] There are so many different ways to say âI love youâ so why not feature its âevilâ counterpart? This post is essentially a compilation of insults so please keep that in mind before reading just in case it could potentially be triggering!

How pathetic it was: a man who once held up the stars lying crushed beneath the weight of the sky.
The static in his mind laced with stardust, weaving galaxies within him until he was no longer his own. Smoke and glass filled his lungs and he inhaled as if the only air he had ever breathed was bitter.
How pitiful it was when the heavens he once cradled descended upon him in a clash of grey, black, and red. And he knew not if the scarlet on his arms were his or if the gods were crying.

A WRITERâS GUIDE TO: INSOMNIA
@writinghaven on Instagram || NO REPOSTS
âInsomnia is a common sleep disorder that interferes with a personâs ability to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up well-rested. If it persists, it can have serious consequences for the personâs health, emotional well-being, and mood.â
DIFFERENT TYPES OF INSOMNIA (not mutually exclusive):
Acute insomnia: This describes a brief period of time in which a person has trouble sleeping. It can persist for days or weeks, but it can usually go away without medication. It is typically caused by stressful life events, but it can also have hormonal causes or be linked to a specific medication or behavior.
Chronic insomnia: This describes a long term struggle with falling and staying asleep. A person with chronic insomnia has trouble sleeping at least three nights a week over a period of 3 months or longer. Unlike with acute insomnia, it can be a lot more difficult to pinpoint what is causing the chronic sleep troubles.
Onset insomnia: Onset insomnia is a type of insomnia that specifically describes a difficulty with falling asleep. Once a person is asleep, they tend to stay asleep just fine, but it could take them several hours to actually fall asleep.
Maintenance insomnia: This describes a personâs inability to stay asleep. A person with maintenance insomnia may wake up several times during the night and have difficulty with falling back asleep. This not only cuts into the amount of time they spend asleep, but it also interrupts the sleep cycle and prevents deep sleep, which is a necessary element of getting restful sleep.
SYMPTOMS OF INSOMNIA
As you can imagine, a lot of the symptoms of insomnia are similar to the symptoms of sleep deprivation. These include:
Difficulty focusing
Drowsiness
Dizziness
Irritability
Anxiety
Lack of coordination
Slowed movements
Impaired decision-making
Tiredness
Memory problems
Depression
WRITING INSOMNIA?
Insomnia affects many people differently and can thus be written in many different ways, but as a first person POV writer, hereâs my take on it:
Iâm sure many of you have heard of the literary device âstream of consciousnessâ and if you havenât, itâs essentially a method of writing that disregards descriptions, settings, and actions, to focus on an uninterrupted exploration of a characterâs thoughts, feelings, and reactions. Rather than describing what is happening, you narrate what the character is thinking, giving context to the situation or setting based solely around how that character responds to it.
This is really great for dragging out a scene and bringing the reader in with you to experience your characterâs frustration and boredom. Let your character stare at the ceiling and ponder, let them watch as the ceiling fan rotates hundreds of times.
HOWEVER try to get some sleep yourself, ok? :)
Hi if it isn't so much to ask do you have tips on writing insomniacs? I hope you see this ><
Hiiii :) Iâve been so unmotivated to make posts but this inspired me! Iâll start working on it now â¨
WRITINGHAVEN ON WRITING: THE 5 STAGES OF GRIEF
@writinghaven on instagram | no reposts!
Itâs a given that in many literary works, characters suffer from the loss of a loved one, a friend, a significant other, etc. One of the best things a writer can do is to evoke a sense of empathy and relatability in the reader and letâs face it, it can get kind of hard.Â
Now âThe 5 Stages of Griefâ is a widely known process that can be a very useful to flesh out your characterâs emotions, so hereâs my take on it! [TW// mental health, depression, suicide, eating disorders]
SOURCES:Â https://www.healthline.com/health/stages-of-grief
https://www.recover-from-grief.com/7-stages-of-grief.html
1. INITIAL SHOCK AND DENIAL
Physical sensations (throat thickening, lack of appetite or increased appetite, nausea, a weight in the chest, trembling hands, swollen eyes, stuffed nose)
Thought patterns (denial, what if, if only, I didnât get to say goodbye, I wish I hadnât/had said That Thing, why-why-why-why-why)
Stress symptoms (inability to sleep, lack of desire to take part in once-loved activities)
Social symptoms (the insistence everything is fine, or the inability to hide grief in public; withdrawal from activities; over-booking activities to keep busy)
There are many ways this can happen: Denial of the cause of death, of blame, of the grief itself. Your character can forget the person is dead-- write about the gut-wrenching punch to the stomach when they realize that theyâre wrongÂ
2. ANGER
Denial is a coping mechanism, but anger is a masking effect.
This anger can be directed at the person who passed away, a friend, a stranger, it can be directed at themselves. It can even simply appear out of the blue, itâs up to you
Remember, people express anger differently. Itâs not always yelling or hitting things, it can mask itself in the form of quiet resentment as well
Physical symptoms (high blood pressure, inability to sleep, ulcers)
Social symptoms (irritability, mood swings, etc.)
3. BARGAINING
âWhat ifâ and âif onlyâ mentality
Thereâs not many physical or social symptoms I can think of for this one, but let me explain it. I like to think that bargaining is a form of postponing or avoiding the full blown sadness, confusion, and hurt that comes with grief. Itâs a last resort before the dam breaks and the water floods in. Itâs desperate-- itâs like trying to hold together a glass ball thatâs almost shattered
4. DEPRESSION
Psychological symptoms (depression, fogginess, numbness, anxiety, apathy, suicidal tendencies etc.)
Social symptoms (isolation, lack of self care and nourishment)Â
Typically a lot of reflection occurs during this time, whether it be through introspection or the intervention of a concerned friend
5. ACCEPTANCE
Acceptance doesnât mean you arenât sad anymore. It doesnât mean that youâve forgotten about the one you lost. All it means is that youâve accepted it and accepted what it means and that itâs part of your life now.Â
People act differently during this stage. Some may return to their usual activities a bit more reserved, some may try their best to maintain an optimistic demeanor. The point is that they have accepted the loss, and that is the first stop to moving on-- to growth.Â

MY UNPOPULAR WRITING OPINIONS
@writinghaven on Instagram || no reposts!!
INTRO: Iâve seen some people doing this, so hereâs my take on unpopular writing opinions!
[please note that I may be mistaken and some of these may not be unpopular (and some are just personal preferences), but Iâm going based on if I have a different opinion than most of my friends]
**note: while Iâm entitled to my own opinion, youâre entitled to yours as well so feel free to disagree**
LISTENING TO MUSIC WHILE WRITING ISNâT A GOOD IDEA: when you listen to music while writing, it helps set the mood for you but the reader isnât necessarily going to be listening to the same song. half of the time, the reader wonât get the feel you want them to because it was the music fueling you. Yeah, it can work for inspiration beforehand and during breaks but while writing itâs ehh
REDEMPTION ARCS? ITâS A NO FROM ME: okay, if itâs a redemption arc like zukoâs then yes, but I have NEVER seen another redemption arc thatâs realistic or interesting . sometimes people canât be redeemed and Iâve seen so many people try to force it I guess Iâm just biased against it by now
ITâS NOT ALWAYS WRITERS BLOCK: a lot of people blame not writing on writers block but sometimes itâs honestly just laziness, procrastination, or just not even trying
HAPPY ENDINGS ARENâT OVERRATED: so many of my friends say they are but to be honest, I feel like both happy and sad endings can be overdone because there are so many books in this world :/ in fact Iâve seen way too many sad endings so nowadays happy endings hit me harder
FIRST PERSON POV IS GREAT [PERHAPS EVEN SUPERIOR]: it depends on the genre but most of the time I love first person POV because I love the inner dialogue and the personal feel of it
READING AND WRITING FANFICTION IS AS VALID AS READING AND WRITING PUBLISHED BOOKS: self explanatory. Iâve read fanfiction thatâs better written than most books Iâve seen :)
SOME MORE UNPOPULAR OPINIONS [that i wonât elaborate on]:
Love triangles are overrated
Found family is only good half of the time, other times itâs really forced
Poetic prose has been overdone recently, sometimes less is more
Filler scenes are important too
