Apparently someone got their car stuck on the light rail tracks at Mt. Baker. For those unfamiliar this is 35 feet up in the air
Fun fact! this is likely due to racism. Not the drivers, to be clear, but this is a not-entirely-unsurprising result of systemic racism in the greater Seattle area and the influence it has on infrastructure spending.
I'm a huge proponent of public transit, rail in specific, and I'm very glad that the greater Seattle area is finally starting to see some solid light rail infrastructure sprouting up in the form of the 1 and 2 lines, but that in no way stops me from critiquing the decisions made in planning and implementation.
Light Rail, in it's colloquial form here in the US, is basically always a compromise solution. It's cheaper than subways, can make good use of existing right-of-way around freeways, and can function as a kind of low-capacity commuter rail in the suburbs while behaving more like a tram or streetcar in downtown areas. It is crucially, however, not a streetcar, nor is it a commuter rail. Streetcars make frequent stops and are optimized for dense areas with lots of traffic. Commuter rails are larger and stop less frequently, optimized for bringing suburban residents into city centers. Commuter rail should, however, be independent of street traffic so it can travel at higher speeds. For this reason, most of the Link light rail system in seattle is actually not at-grade (street level), but on either elevated or sub-grade track. Downtown, the lightrail actually functions as a low-capacity low-frequency subway system in what used to be the bus tunnel (we don't have time, but yes it was stupid). Everywhere else, it's up on elevated tracks that largely follow the freeway system.
There are three stations, all immediately south of that Mount Baker elevated station, where the Link actually runs at-grade. These stations run through the historic low income immigrant neighborhoods of southeast seattle. Here, the trains are forced to stop at red lights, interact with crossing and left-turning traffic, and even cross through sidewalks and terrifyingly narrow pedestrian islands. They could have built elevated track here, as they did everywhere else, but they didn't. they didn't want to spend the money. I have personally watched light rail cars carrying hundreds of people have to wait two full minutes for cars turning left in front of them, delaying trains so like, 5 people could drive there. Once it reaches the end of this low income immigrant-dominant neighborhood, however, the Link returns to it's above-grade status, with Mount Baker being the first elevated stop. You want to know how this woman, who claims she was misdirected by her GPS, probably ended up here? I would bet anything she tried to make a turn at the intersection just before the stop and got confused. The intersection, for reference, looks like this:
I'm not saying it's an easy mistake to make, but given the number of people who drive through here every day, it's honestly not that surprising that someone, especially someone who is from out of town, or someone who is used to shared streetcar lanes, would eventually make this mistake. When you're dealing with a city of hundreds of thousands of people, it's only a matter of time before a mistake like this happens. but it is only possible for it to happen because of the decisions made in the planning process, and one of those decisions was effectively "we can save money if we make everything worse in that part of town where all the foreign poors live", and so they built the thing at-grade, instead of keeping it elevated like everywhere else.
and yes, those tracks are in the middle of a four lane road, and no, there is no way to get to any of the at-grade stations without crossing at least two lanes of traffic on a very busy avenue. and those tiny little pedestrian islands are not only terrifying to walk on, but a man in a wheelchair was clipped by a passing train car a while back because his chair didn't really fit through the tight turns well and one of his feet was sticking slightly out when the train passed by. This is not a problem at like, any other stops in the Link system. Just here. Just in this neighborhood. And it's a fucking disgrace.
saying this on main too since im logged in. my beautiful lavender iphone 11 died today. along with all the photos, notes, tiktok drafts, probably text messages too. all gone. theres at least 6 months of stuff not saved anywhere which is gone forever. i am sad. im trying to not have a breakdown about it. but im feeling some way about it
Anyway yea if anyone needs a commission uh please message me or just go straight to my ko-fi (I have pwyc zines)
Examples
i know folks are gonna call me a pedo for this one, but i grew up seeing my mom and grandma naked. they had health issues and at times needed care and help showering. and i truly think more kids need to be shown the nonsexual reality of naked women at a young age. there is nothing sexual about my grandmothers breasts, they were simply body parts. more women die of heart attacks because people are too afraid of breasts to do real chest compressions, because they are scared to touch their breasts. the sexualization of our bodies literally kills us. i need people to be more normal about naked bodies and i'm 100% serious.
"lupita nyong'o can't be helen of troy because helen was greek and there weren't black people in ancient greece"
DO YOU THINK THESE MOTHERFUCKERS DIDNT HAVE BOATS. THIS ENTIRE MOVIE IS ABOUT ONE OF THOSE MOTHERFUCKERS AND HIS BOAT
do you think these people can read
Best comment I just saw "Helen of Troy was perfectly cast, because all these men are fighting about her."

so i just rb'd this but op is gonna block me no doubt and i want to discuss it properly
as i said in the rb, punching up is very different to punching down. calling for violence against a class that has relative privilege over oneself is not a genuine call for violence, it is a violent decry of anger that does not translate to real world harm. Men kill women regularly, and get away with it.
racialised people get killed by white people, regularly, and white people get away with it with regularity
so a racialised person saying "kill all white people" is not genocidal, a woman saying "kill all men" is not fascistic. but yes, the opposite is indeed true
trans women are killed by tme's regularly, and even on smaller scale people who are not transmisogynised have privilege over those who do, so a trans woman saying "bomb that kills all tmes" is understandable,
whereas you, someone who is not transfeminised, telling transfems to jump off of bridges is indeed fascistic
first i feel like a lot of people forget that TME refers to lots of men and women and other genders, not specifically trans men.
second, the only white people i've met who have taken "kill all white people" as offensive are people who've revealed themselves to have ignorant, racist beliefs. the only men i've met who have taken "kill all men" as offensive are men who have revealed themselves to be misogynistic douches. this then logically applies to transfems who punch up against the patriarchy, if you get mad when a trans woman makes the same "kill all men" joke, please examine your own beliefs.
when you hear someone punch up you should go, "oh wow this person is clearly angry about their societal position, maybe i should support them and build solidarity," but instead some of these fuckers are out here TELLING WOMEN TO JUMP OFF BRIDGES.
imagine being able to tell someone every single thought in your head and them not think that you’re completely unhinged
This is actually a useful thing to understand how to spell out. What exactly is wrong with puritanical attitudes towards sexuality? TW: Discusses body image issues, suicide, STIs, sexual assault etc
1. It fosters fear, disgust and loathing of our bodies. By hiding the human body as soon as we are born, and treating it as an object of inherent shame: THAT creates trauma. Shame is one of the primary sources of trauma, its the fuel and lets trauma burn. Those raised in nudist societies, and children raised in households where nudity is treated in a neutral and non-sexual tend to have a much more positive relationship with their bodies as adults. This makes complete sense when you think about it. Going through puberty not knowing if your body is "normal" terrifies children in ways that stick with them for life. In fact, most cultures outside of the Unites States aren't as strange about non-sexual nudity actually...and are healthier for it. We can't have body positivity as long as we are literally criminalized for having an uncovered body. 2. It creates fear, shame and disgust about sex. Most people have sex at some point in their lives. No one would be here at all without it. Most people have sexual desires which lie outside their control. When people are ashamed of those desires, it leads to self hatred, and depression and anxiety. This shame is just as traumatic as bodily shame. When sex is normalized, and treated with the same candor as any other hobby: it becomes less apt to traumatize people.
3. Puritanical attitudes towards sex limit sex education. When people are too ashamed to talk about sex, people don't learn about pregnancy, stis, or consent. All of these things can and do kill people when they aren't addressed with an open dialogue.
Sexual shame leads to people too ashamed to buy condoms, to talk to their doctor about birth control, to ask their partner to use protection, to get tested...the negative health impacts of sexual puritanism have a massive negative effect on society.
4. Sexual shame leads to poorer communication in relationships. Ohh if I had a dime for every person i knew who ruined their relationship because they felt too guilty to talk to their partner about their sexual feelings...Not just that, but the general body shame that comes with puritanism blocks people from connecting to one another too. Have you ever avoided getting close to someone because you were ashamed of your body? If not, I guarantee you know someone who has.
5. Misogyny! Puritanical sexual believes hold that women are not capable of sexual agency. That only men should initiate sex. That women should only ever want babies and not pleasure from sex. All of this rolls right into the next one:
6. Victim blaming in sexual assault. When women are the gatekeepers of sex, its easy to blame them when they 'fail' to protect their chastity when someone violates their trust. This isn't something that just effects women: as the same attitudes hold that men are not capable of experiencing sexual assault. The lack of education and discussion about sex in a sex-negative world inherently prevent the open dialogues necessary for creating and maintaining consent culture.
7. Suppression and marginalization of the queer community. If we're too ashamed to talk about sex, we'll be too ashamed to talk about sexuality. Puritans can't accept any deviation from gender norms either. Anything other than sex between a cis man and a cis woman for the purpose of making a baby is a deviant kink, a mental illness, and needs to be wiped out. Its important to point out that many queer people hold puritanical values about sex: believing that they can achieve sex negativity and queer liberation at the same time. However, sex negative movements always rise with censorship and discrimination of queer people...because queer people are inherently considered deviant by the vast majority of sex negative "allies". It's very dangerous to forget this.
8. Censorship of art. Who decides what is sexual and what is not? Its easy to agree that sex needs to be hidden...but it never takes long before the definition of what is "sexual" expands. Even women's breasts are considered sexual in the United States. Its so normal for Americans to think of them that way that women can't feed their children in public. Drag queens face violence for reading at libraries. Books get taken off the shelves. Artists are bullied offline.
9. Censorship of scientific exploration. Scientific research into reproductive health, sexual behavior, gender identity and more are often hindered due to the "moral objections" of puritans, delaying progress and understanding. That's just off the top of my head. I think its time for people to take how problematic 'puritanism' is more seriously. As we see fascism rear its ugly head all over the world, we're going to see a lot more talk about 'degenerates'...and we know where that kind of talk leads.
Add 'censorship of medical care'. See the famous example that people are not taught how to perform CPR on women since having a training dummy with uncovered "female breasts! gasp!" would be 'sexually explicit'. So no one is taught how to give women CPR and more of them die as a result. But there are lots of other examples; women's health and sexual health is riddled with failings because we can't stop seeing their very bodily existence as sexually obscene. Better they just die than someone see them without clothes on once.

happy fucking pride month we should never have ceded to let drag queens speak for trans women
My summer project for myself is to make a collection of 16 of these embroidered thimble rings (called kaga yubinuki), these are my first 2 ^^
using this as an opportunity to add this link to this post too:
Thank you for coming back to my blog after so long a leave (again). I plan to update my blog at least once a month but as you see it has be
really clear, written instructions that explain the why as well as the how. there's a lot of beautiful, simple designs on her blog as well!
I've been posting about these a lot more on my Instagram btw! @ fibrescribbles
in the last image you can see the second one i made (last summer!), and as you can see, I've used it a lot! I've been using my new one (the orange and green) for these 4 and it's holding up great so far ^^
every transfem suicide is a murder. don't forget that
TLDR: this white queer person tried to hold other white queer people accountable for their racism and they DID NOT LIKE THAT

You have to love her. You have to love her when she sleeps til noon because she was up late. You have to love her when she doesn’t have the energy to do anything but lay in bed. You have to love her when she didn’t shave today. You have to love her when her thighs are hairy because the sensation of shaving them is too much for her to handle. You have to love her when she spends a day playing games because working is too overwhelming. You have to love her when people assume the worst of her. You have to love her when the world turns against her. You have to love her when she feels powerless and alone and abandoned. You have to love her unconditionally.
You have to love her when she's plural. You have to love her when she's little. You have to love her when she's racialized. You have to love her when her autism isn't just quirky hyperfixations. You have to love her when her mental health isn't just #Relatable Internet memes. You have to love her when she's disabled. You have to love her when she has chronic pain. You have to love her when she needs help with the little things. You have to love her when she's unemployed, broke, struggling. You have to love her when people ignore her. You have to love her when people talk over her. You have to love her enough to lift her up. You have to love her enough to give her what she needs. You have to love her enough to stand by her no matter what, because no one deserves to be without love.
AND LOVE IS NOT JUST "I love you" EITHER. Love is support. Love is safety. Love isn't just donating to charity. Love is paying for her to eat when you know she won't otherwise. Love isn't just reblogging a positivity post and hoping she'll see. Love is seeking her out and telling her how much she means and how happy you are that she's here.
Love is not just love, love is action. If you don't get that, then you've missed the point.
