This is because there are two parts to memories - their encoding and their recall. The encoding determines their availability, their recall determines their accessibility. The reason why trauma memory and childhood amnesia are different is in this distinction. Trauma memory is often encoded differently, bypassing to the limbic system where it is stored as intrinsic memory. It can’t be recalled because it was never encoded. Childhood amnesia, however, seems to indicate that the memories are encoded, but we lose access to them as we age. This is most likely due to the development of brain structures that fundamentally change our encoding and recall of memory as we get older.

the reason I put this in the tags instead of in a reblog is because i didn’t want to spread around a bunch of shit that was potentially misremembered or misleading. My general point was that i agree with you, and I was commenting on how the first reblog in the chain completely glossed over op’s comment about wondering who they are (which could be taken in a joking manner, but which could also be genuine, or both, I don’t know) — which, again, point me to a study saying that forgetting who you are/were is normal. That’s a perfectly reasonable thing to be concerned about, in my opinion. Dissociative amnesia due to repeated childhood trauma generally does look different from standard childhood amnesia, to the best of my knowledge, though I’m not going to make any claims as to exactly how because I don’t remember where I learned this from. And the reason I say you can’t encode memories in the body is because you need your brain to remember things. that’s not pseudoscience or controversial, and again, I am agreeing with you.

Further on in the tags I make sure to make no definitive claims about repressed traumatic memories, because that’s something I don’t know much about, and i point out that there’s also some disconnect between what different people in the reblogs think “childhood” is. What op is referring to as childhood memory loss could be anything from not having memories before age 6, to not having memories before age 16, which, once again, are very different situations. Me bringing that up is not me trying to make any unverified claims, it’s just an observation.
