This is such a comfortable statement if you like set theory. {The set of all potatoes} has a compliment, containing everything that is not potatoes. I would say that an object in potato complement cannot be perturbed into being a potato, therefore the set is closed. I’d also say that the potato can be sufficiently manipulated to the point where it would not be called a potato any longer, so the set of potatoes is an open set (with a closed complement, as we would want). So the boundary values of potato-ness belong to the non-potato set.

But does the set of potatoes P contain its boundary set? That is, given an arbitrary potato p, can one always find a slightly less potatoey potato p’ in P? I would argue that there is a set of maximally non-potatoey potatoes that form the boundary of the definition used to specify P. Otherwise, there would exist a non-potato that can be no closer to being a potato without being a potato, but then why would that potato not be a potato if it can be no more potatoey? It must be the case that P is the closed set and (not P) is the open set. Regardless, it is interesting to note that all operations on objects in this world are one of the following four mappings from: P -> P, P -> (not P), (not P) -> P, or (not P) -> (not P).
