I think it's official. Belly flaps are my favorite part of the rabbit to cook with
Seriously? What is with all the snakes this year?
Over the 3 previous summers, I've only seen 2 snakes, and now I've run into 3 in the last 2 weeks
Saw this guy coiled in the middle of the chicken yard today: a prarie rattlesnake. You can tell from the triangular head and the polite disposition. It didn't hiss at me, didn't rattle, didn't move a muscle or bother the chickens, so I gave it a wide berth and... went about my business. It didn't even bother the chickens
However, when I came back with my camera, I wasn't about to get close, so these pics were taken with full zoom. Upside, my camera is a DSLR, so you can see lots of details if you click the picks to zoom in

Biodiversity can be achieved through executive dysfunction!
Image description: a very simple meme. On the left are four insects: what looks like a monarch butterfly with pink instead of orange on its wings (I am unsure if this is representative of a real species of butterfly or not), a wasp (or similar insect), a green praying mantis, and a tarantula spider above the text "thank you for leaving the weeds for us to feed and live in". On the right is watermarked clipart of a gardener over the text "I am too lazy to clear out the weed".
Gods damned fucking bull snakes! I appreciate that they eat the rodents and stuff, but they are rude little bastards
I was feeding the chickens when I heard Wyatt do the Bad Bark and found a snake coiled under a sage bush inside the yard. Which, good job, Wyatt, that is exactly your job, but please next time be easier to call away from the potentially venomous snake
Anyways, got Wyatt away and put him in the garden, and went to see what he found, especially since the rattle I heard sounded... off
Just a bull snake vibrating its tail against an old scrap from a potting soil bag. Further confirmed when I saw the end of its tail and when the "rattle" stopped making noise when its tail moved over soil instead of debris
But it was still being a little jerk and wouldn't leave and then tried to "strike" at me, so I went to get some gloves and something to turn the snake into dinner and a hat band.
Got my gloves. Found the point shovel! (it had been missing for weeks) And by the time I got back, the snake was gone. A quick inspection by the dog confirmed no more snake in the yard
So, no snakes died today, Wyatt got a treat, and I found my point shovel. Calling it a win
Fucking hell
So today's snake encounter was with a rattler, and I could tell for 2 reasons:
First, it happened at night
And second, the rattle. I don't care how good of a mimic a bull snake is, whether they're hissing or shaking their tail against debris, their "rattle" always sounds off
This was not off
All I was trying to do was fill up the cats' water from the IBC tank I've got out by the garden, and I don't know if I nearly stepped on it or what, but I shrieked and ran back inside the fenceline
It happened outside the yard, so I'm not gonna fault it. Plus, it ran away as fast as I did. I came back outside with a flashlight in seconds and couldn't find it, but also didn't hear it rattling anymore.
This is why I like rattlesnakes. Unlike bull snakes, they're nice and polite. Please enjoy all the water I spilled, Mr. Danger Noodle, and for the love of all things holy, don't go giving me another heart attack like that!

Look at my shitty, impromptu rabbit tractor I slapped together
But it gets the job done, and Vega ( formerly Sylvia) is comfortable enough she's lying down
"Good for nothing pot of garbage!"
Everybody enjoying the fresh spring grass
when the capitalists die out either thru global warming or revolution will we be able to start homegrown internet
been reading about dual power and how to grow my own tomatoes and i’m wondering how and if we’ll be able to start commie internet lol
like obviously the internet is this huge electric capitalist controlled hardware infrastructure thing so after all that shuts down is there a way to do it ourselves lol
i want to come home from a hard day on the communal allotment, kiss my Wife, crank up my generator, and start sharing meams!
GOOD NEWS: the homegrown commie internet is in the works! Across the world, people fighting against censorship and for a more democratic internet are building mesh networks (meshnets) of long-range wifi (LoRa)
Since wifi is just a standard for sending data through radio waves, and radio waves can go a pretty long way if you use ‘em right, it’s not that difficult to connect two computers by wifi from across town. Then you just keep adding more computers to the network and you’ve got internet!
Small antennae, like for connecting across the neighborhood, can literally be built out of trash
And a larger, more accurate one can be built pretty cheap too
(You can also reuse an old satellite TV dish, or really anything else that’s roughly parabolic)
There are LoRa meshnets in places like New York, India, and all over Europe: Spain (pictured below), Greece, Austria, Germany, etc
As for sharing fresh mëmês, the network to go to is Scuttlebutt. Unlike most social media, Scuttlebutt posts are stored on your computer and sent directly to your friends’ computers (rather than being stored on the cloud and sent to a central server). It works just fine over traditional internet, but you can also view and interact with it offline, and it has protocols for connecting over any means that two computers can share information - that includes LoRa, as well as hardwired connections, sneakernet (basically mailing a USB stick back and forth), etc
What that means is you always know that your info is just as safe as the network it’s sent on and the computer that receives it - no one even theoretically has the ability to collect and sell it all. And, since it’s all run on your computer, there’s no servers to go down or companies to go out of business that could destroy the whole thing
You can read more about this kind of stuff here (or here if it’s cloudy in Barcelona)!
there’s also the work being done by the DCPT, left-behind Detroiters meshing together their neighborhoods to share overpriced high-speed connections among the community and producing these good good educational documents, especially this rad resource page. building meshnets to share a global uplink is very similar to building meshnets for the purpose of intracommunication and these resources are useful in both cases
I’ve had a couple people ask about how to join/organize something like this, which is great! The best list of active projects I know of is here, though you should also do a search online if you don’t see one in your area in case they missed it. For those without a nearby group, put a pin here and try contacting nearby pins as well - you can use the instructions on buildyourowninter.net as well as the DCPT’s resources as linked above to get set up!
Please reblog this version so others can get involved!
