If someone makes you uncomfortable, you are not obliged to hang out with them.

You are not obliged to be their friend.

You are not obliged to date them.

You are not obliged to try to “fix” them or help them become a better person. (Indeed, this is often an effort doomed to failure. You are not their therapist.)

If you’re uncomfortable or unhappy in a relationship, you have every right to take care of yourself and walk away.

Even if it makes them sad.

Even if they threaten you—or themself—to try to convince you to stay.

Even if they swear they’ve changed, or that they will change.

You are not, and should not be made to feel, responsible for someone else’s happiness and well-being at the expense of your own.
