Adding onto this aromantics can still dream about love having crushes etc but absolutely fizzle out or become deathly avoidant of relationships and struggle to form attachment or even consider people they know for anything romantic at all. They may dislike the idea of people having crushes on them seriously. But like having crushes (onesided) on other people. They can like the idea of a relationship or being in love but hate being in one.

Jake and Dirk just read to me as people that are incredibly reluctant to form proper attachments due to failure while young to form or rather be taught what a secure attachment to people means. For Jake, it’s fear of what they’ll see if they get too close and that they’ll leave him or think less of him in some way, Dirk because he doesn’t think he does well with people in general. They do if they try but I feel like they’d be highly skeptical and put up fronts to most encounters or social engagements because that’s what they’re used to doing, 100% of the time.

But the neato thing I guess, to me with Dirk and Jake is that they’ve had long enough to build that genuine care and bond that they find so hard to figure out. They’ve seen each other at their worst, at their semi-best, and obviously they both need a lot of work and time to be on their own and figure their own shit out but objectively I do believe that genuinely they stand a point to gain at least some idea of “love” around each other.
