Moonbows
A moonbow, also known as a lunar rainbow or white rainbow, is a rainbow created by moonlight rather than sunlight. It's formed when light from the moon refracts and reflects off water droplets, like those in rain or mist, creating a visible arc of light in the sky. Moonbows are generally fainter and less colorful than regular rainbows, and they are much rarer due to the need for specific conditions like a full or near-full moon, clear skies, and dark skies.
Also called a Paraselene
(pair-uh-sell-een, sometimes mispronounced pair-uh-sail-een)
They have a long and interesting mythological history in many cultures. They are associated with the devil in English folklore, with Draugr or other dark elves/shadowfolk in Nordic mythology, and in Japanese mythology they’re associated with Tsukiyomi, the moon god, and are a sign of either good rice harvest, if they happen during summer, or a sign of imminent natural disasters, especially tsunamis and earthquakes. Sometimes they’re associated with death as well, probably because their solar counterpart, a Parhelion, is associated with rebirth (and by extension snakes)
They’re one of my favorite natural phenomena:)
