Hello, It’s nice to meet you. My name is Vincent and I’m 23 and, I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, trans. I came out to the world as FTM a few months ago after years of covering it up, sweeping it under the rug, hoping I’d forget about these feelings and move on. The thing is though, those feelings – they don’t go away. After much love and support from my partner, I came out as trans to my coworkers, friends, and social media. It was one of the most terrifying and freeing moments of my life.
The support I received was overwhelming and still gets me very emotional.
I’ve gotten past the first hurdle: coming out. Picking my new name. Connecting with other trans folk. Even with the body dysmorphia that I’ve lived with (hey there old friend), I know I’m on the right track and becoming a happier, more attuned version of myself. And that feels great.
Now I’ve reached the second hurdle: HRT and Top Surgery. I’ve put in hours and hours of research on pros and cons, costs, and what to expect. Ultimately, I decided it’s something that I need to pursue.
I compiled a list of doctors, surgery and travel costs. It’s a lot. My wallet basically laughed at me. But there are other trans folk out there who have walked this journey, and they somehow did it. So can I.
The first step would be for me to schedule a meet and greet with Dr. Adam Sauceda, a local therapist specializing in Gender-Identity disorder and well versed in WPATH standards. The initial session costs $120, and following sessions cost $100 (he does not accept insurance). What I hope to gain is a letter from a professional that states I am a good candidate for Horomone Replacement Therapy and, later, Top Surgery.
The second step would be for me to bring that letter to an Endocronologist. If approved, I’d start my Horomone Replacement Therapy. I’ve been working with insurance and they’ve been very receptive to helping me cover the costs of testosterone injections. After about a year on T, my fingers are crossed that with what I am able to scrap and save + donations from people like you, I can schedule Top Surgery. I have chosen Dr. Daniel Medalie in Cleveland, OH as my surgeon for this complex procedure. His results are fantastic – absolutely some of the best that I’ve seen. No franken-chests.
I’ve broken down the costs and will attach some snippets from his website, as well as quotes from Expedia. But to sum things up:
Top Surgery initial consultation: $755
Day of Surgery and 1 week post-op: $9,055
For a grand total of: $9,805
Sometime between T and Top Surgery, I would also like to get my name legally changed to Vincent. Nothing sucks the thunder out of your soul like seeing your deadname on your liscence and paychecks. In San Antonio, this would cost about $232.
