May 6th marks the 20th anniversary of the Channel Tunnel (or the Chunnel, or le tunnel sous la Manche), but the desire to build such a structure predates its actualization by quite a bit more than we might first suspect.
Following Napoleon III's rise to power, in a France gripped by a fever for architectural modernization, T. de Gamond's plan of 1856 called for a foundation laid into the same stratum of seabed ultimately drilled 20 years ago, but featured a surface port mid-Channel.
Portless and contiguous, the Chunnel currently boasts the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world, with 37.9 kilometers out of its total 50.5 kilometers resting submerged in the same geographical constraints studied so closely by Gamond in the 1830s.

"New York City before the 1870s simply could not have survived without horse power, and the streets were filled with thousands of the animals pulling streetcars, omnibuses, carts and basically everything else that moved. As a result, life for a horse was pretty much appalling. Life span was relatively short. Although the city designated places along the waterfront to dispose of carcasses, it wasn't unheard of to leave bodies in the street." (via the Bowery Boys)

Toward the end of his life P.D.Q became very frugal; this attempt to write an entire piano sonata on one page of manuscript paper has yet to be deciphered.
PDQ Bach: the entirely fictional "forgotten son" of the Bach musical dynasty-- and also entirely the invention of satirical composer Peter Schickele, an American composer active principally in the 60s & 70s, and who won four Grammy awards for his parodies.

Bowden Spacelander prototype, 1946. (“Futuristic in style, it looked entirely unlike any bicycle on the road at the time, and even today it’s styling remains un-matched. Bowden’s bicycle was not produced until 1960, with many significant changes to his original design. Most notable was the use of fiberglass for the frame design.”)
