May 6th marks the 20th anniversary of the Channel Tunnel (or the Chunnel, or le tunnel sous la Manche), but the desire to build such a structure predates its actualization by quite a bit more than we might first suspect.

Following Napoleon III's rise to power, in a France gripped by a fever for architectural modernization, T. de Gamond's plan of 1856 called for a foundation laid into the same stratum of seabed ultimately drilled 20 years ago, but featured a surface port mid-Channel.

Portless and contiguous, the Chunnel currently boasts the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world, with 37.9 kilometers out of its total 50.5 kilometers resting submerged in the same geographical constraints studied so closely by Gamond in the 1830s.

"New York City before the 1870s simply could not have survived without horse power, and the streets were filled with thousands of the animals pulling streetcars, omnibuses, carts and basically everything else that moved. As a result, life for a horse was pretty much appalling. Life span was relatively short. Although the city designated places along the waterfront to dispose of carcasses, it wasn't unheard of to leave bodies in the street." (via the Bowery Boys)
