Professor Maple's Lab

I'd like to take this time to introduce myself. I am Professor Maple, a Pokemon Professor who specializes in ancient Pokemon species. I study everything from fossil pokemon, pokemon believed to be from ancient civilizations, mythical pokemon, and even legendary pokemon on occasion.

I'm a native of the Sinnoh region, though I have travelled and spent time in many other regions in my life. I run a lab and Pokemon sanctuary to the west of Canalave City with the aid of my assistants June and April, as well as my team of Pokemon.

I'm relatively young for a professor, being only in my mid-twenties, but have a great deal of experience in the field of Pokemon care and study, as my mother is a nurse and my father runs a Pokemon daycare.

I fell in love with ancient Pokemon on a trip to the Kanto region as a child, visiting Mt. Moon and the Cinnabar Island Research Lab and seeing the incredible fossils present. This snowballed into a love of both natural and human history, which is what I have based my personal studies on.

My personal Pokemon team is comprised of Pokemon I've met and encountered on my journeys as a young adult, and are family to me. They are:

A male Rampardos named Scully, my partner Pokemon and my best friend, a tough and solitary individual (like myself), but has a very protective and caring personality, especially for young Pokemon and children. He is my rock (no pun intended), and I wouldn't know what to do without him.

A male Aerodactyl named Rodan, a show off, braggart and drama queen, but a sweetheart when you really get to know him. Secretly loves chin scritches, pretends he doesn't.

A shiny female Aurorus named Lumina, a rescue Pokemon I and Scully saved early on from a pokemon smuggling ring when she was an Amaura, sweetheart with a very maternal nature, but also an angry mama Beartic when needed. Has a long standing rivalry with Rodan, who is her best frenemy.

A male Arcanine named Buddy, the son of my dad's partner Pokemon, adorable goofball, all bark AND bite when required. Give him treats and/or a belly rub and you are his best friend for eternity.

A male Aegislash named Caliburn, found him wandering alone around a ruined castle in Kalos as a Honedge, helped him find his missing scabbard, dueled me and Rodan to prove our metel, quiet and a bit snobbish, but a protector of the weak. Enjoys baking, just wishes he could eat some of what he makes.

A female Spiritomb named Evo, found her keystone trapped in a well near the site of our lab years before it was built, joined the team after she saw I meant no harm to her home, is generally quiet and mysterious, but also playful with those she trusts. My spooky ethereal daughter, whom I love very much.

This is my core team, but I have other Pokemon who live with us here at the lab as well. I may talk about them another time, as this introduction post has already stretched on long enough.

When it comes to ancient Pokemon, there are three main species that I would recommend to any prospective trainers of these historic creatures. I'll be placing my suggestions in ascending order of difficulty to capture and train, so please take this into consideration.

If we're talking ancient in the sense that the species has been around humankind for centuries, there's no better choice than the Arcanine line. Incredibly friendly and intelligent, while also packing both literal and figurative fire power, Arcanine and Growlithe are an excellent choice for an ancient Pokemon that is both an attacking powerhouse and a loyal companion.

For a more "traditional" ancient Pokemon, why not try the Aegislash line? They aren't just Pokemon that take the form of a sword and shield, they are literally ancient weapons that are being inhabited by a spirit. Now, while they are solid attackers and teammates, you often must first prove yourself worthy to them in some manner before they even consider joining you. In the case of my Aegislash, I had to retrieve his scabbard from the ruins he inhabited at the time as a Honedge, than I had to best him in a battle to prove my mettle. Remember, they have lived for hundreds, if not thousands, of years, so we youngsters have to earn their respect.

Finally, if your considering a fossil Pokemon, there's no better physical attacker than a Tyrantrum. Incredibly strong, both in stature and will, you will need to earn the trust of your Tyrantrum as a Tyrunt, as any adults living in the wild are incredibly difficult to approach, let alone capture and train them. This isn't for the faint of heart, but if you put in the work, you'll have arguably one of history's greatest damage-dealing Pokemon on your side.

For an "easier" fossil Pokemon, the Kabuto line is relatively low maintenance, dependable in a battle, and friendly with other Pokemon. Kabutops is theorized to be an ancient ancestor to Scyther, to give you an idea as to the kind of power were talking about.

I hope these suggestions help. I've arranged them in ascending order of difficulty to capture and train, as stated previously, so please take into consideration your own means to care and provide for a potential Pokemon friend. First off, congratulations to both you and the expecting couple! First time parenthood for Pokemon, just like for us humans, is such a difficult, yet rewarding, experience (or so I've heard from my friends with kids, anyway).

When it comes to caring for the offspring of two different species of Pokemon, there are several key points to keep in mind.

Firstly, which parent the offspring is going to take after the most. Most people expect Pokemon born from the union of two different species to take after the mom, but this isn't always the case. Hybrid species, or variants of pre-existing species, are rather common. It could be as small as variations in typical species colour or size, or as big as vastly different physical traits or even new typing. In your case however, it's most likely that the offspring will be Drowzee, but might have more affinity for moves of their father's dark and fairy typing. With hybrids, there can be some medical concerns. However, as both Hypno and Morgrem are similar in size (relatively), and both live similar lifestyles in the wild, I doubt there will be anything extreme.

Secondly, caring for hybrids may be different from caring for their parents' species. You may find that, unlike Hypno, the babies will be far more active and passionate, taking some traits from dear old dad. On the flip side, they may seem more reserved, like mom. In truth, each case of hybrid Pokemon is treading new ground, you never know which way the genetic dice will role. For a good example, my fellow Pokemon Professor @prof-peach has a Charizard whose dad is a Garchomp. While this individuals siblings took after their mom, she took several physical traits from dear old dad that her siblings didn't. In the end, the best way to prepare is to study typical Drowzee and Impidimp care, and adapt to your own individual instances.

Finally, and I can't stress this enough, TAKE THE KIDS TO A POKEMON CENTER. You won't believe how many quacks discourage this, because of silly reasons like "Pokemon give birth in the wild all the time, so who are we to interfere?" Why should we, you ask? Because hybrids are almost always unique cases, that their parents are often not equipped to properly handle. Take the little ones for a check up at your local center or hospital, with mom and dad too. They will make all of you aware of any potential health or behavioral concerns, and advise you on the best means for handling them.

I hope this helps. I unfortunately can't go further into detail, because as I said each case of hybrid birth is unique. However, these general tips should help you and the expecting couple on how to care for the new arrivals.

Is there anything I should know ahead of time about proper Golett care? Is it similar to Cubone care where you give em dust baths or is there more to it? I never actually cared for Golett properly since he just waited for me in the forest

Hi again, glad to hear Giant is doing good! Energy build up is actually pretty rare for the Golurk line, as when this occurs they typically vent the excess energy either through battling or prolonged flight. Giant really must have been out of it if they shut down instead of burning off the extra steam.

Golett are relatively easy Pokemon to care for, especially if the trainer happens to have experience in ground and ghost types, which it seems you do.

Dust baths, while excellent for other ground types such as Cubone and Rhyhorn, aren't necessary for a Golett's health. In fact, Golett don't really mind dirt, grime, or debris building up on their bodies, so long as it doesn't impede their movement. However, you obviously want to make sure they don't track a mess behind them inside your home. For cleaning Giant, I'd recommend either blow-drying them with a leaf-blower or using a high suction vacuum to suck any dirt or grime off of their body. This doesn't really bother Golett, and is very effective in keeping them dirt and dust free.

Golett also don't really "eat", instead they are powered by their internal energy. Giant seems to have a friend in your Phantump, so they should be a good match in sharing energy between each other, should they need to. Of course, you should always keep an eye to their energy levels, to ensure one isn't taking or giving too much energy to the other.

Finally, your gonna want to give Giant a comfy spot just for themselves outside of their Poke ball. Golett prefer dry, open areas, that have sufficient coverage from the elements. This can be inside or out, so long as Giant is protected from rain, wind, snow, sleet, hail, and humidity, it should be good. Make sure Giant likes the area before you designate it as theirs. After all, they will be the ones inhabiting the space. Adding some things Giant likes to the space is also a good idea, as it will not only make them happier, it will also reduce stress to you big buddy that could cause issues with their internal energy.

What most important is to give Giant a place that is comfortable for them. Golett are surprisingly versatile Pokemon, whose wants are typically easy to supply for most people. Just keep an eye on their internal energy, as that is always the area any trainer of a Golett or Golurk should be vigilant of.

As for some info as to where I found it, it was all “balled” up it kinda looked like a Bakugan battle ball but lumpy cuz of the arms and legs. It was right at the bottom of a steep slope so I think it maybe it slipped during some mudslide. My phantump was the one to actually find it. It was still glowing brightly so I think that’s good. After scaring away some Natus, it “woke up” around 7 minutes later.

It kinda just followed me home but I think it’s actual home is deep in the forest since I saw some Sigilyphs nearby. I’ve tried to shoo it off the first time but it was persistent.

I have a feeling I’ll have to hand em over to a ranger soon so it can be returned to its original home but my Cubone and Phantump have already become good friends with them. I wouldn’t consider myself a battle trainer or even well equipped to hike deep into a forest just to visit em every now and then.

As a side note, I haven’t actually caught them yet. They’re still very much wild. They also typically got a decent amount of energy around Phantump, maybe cuz they’re both ghost types? I’m not quite sure how old Phantump is but he was pretty surprised when he saw a TV

Golett (that I’ve named Giant) is also very interested in bonking things with finished paper gift rolls. I think they like the “thonk” noise. Also I live in Unova. Hope this all makes sense

Well, this actually changes a few things from my original post.

Firstly, it's a good bet that those Sigilyph may be responsible for your buddy's condition. Golett and Golurk are both believed to have been created ages ago, by a now lost civilization. Sigilyph are believed to be guardians of ancient cities and towns. It's very likely that your Golett accidently entered territory that belonged to a rival state or power to the civilization that they originally belonged to, causing the Sigilyph to attack a perceived invader.

If your friend isn't physically damaged, they most likely used a powerful psychic-type move which has either imbalanced Golett's energy or is sapping it away. Proximity to your Phantump and their energy may have abated the problem for a little while, but it didnt fix it permenantly. I'd recommend taking Golett to a Pokemon Center ASAP, or sending them to myself or another qualified specialist in their species for immediant diagnosis and treatment. There's no need to send them away unless a professional deems it 100% necessary for Golett's well-being. Your buddy can and will get better, but only with proper treatment and care.

Side note, if your concerned about Golett wandering off or leaving, have a discussion with them about what they want from a relationship with you. Remember that Pokemon are individuals with needs, wants, and wishes, and that communication is key to a happy Pokemon/Person relationship.

Here at the lab, we have a somewhat unofficial mascot. That mascot? Jerry the Psyduck.

Jerry is, quite literally, an enigma. No one knows where he came from. No one knows why he just appeared at the lab one day. No one knows why Jerry sticks around. What we do know, is that Jerry is a Grade A+ doofus.

Plant potts knocked over? Jerry. Garden hose so kinked and knotted it resembles a ball of yarn? Jerry was there. My assistant Mya's fluffy cardigan now somehow on the roof? The fantabulous Jerry strikes again!

In all honesty, we have don't know what drove Jerry to stay here at the lab. He's not a Pokemon we were sent, nor is our lab located in an area of Sinnoh where Psyduck typically congregate. We don't know his motives, nor what drives him in life. All we know is that Jerry is Jerry, and we wouldn't have him any other way.

He now lives full time in a pond located at the center of the lab's grounds, where Mya and Jeck, another of my assistants, have built him a comfy hut out of an old wooden crate and some lightly used blankets. Despite his trouble making, he genuinely seems happy here. And despite the mischief he gets up to, Jerry has become a beloved member of our family here.

So, here's to you Jerry. You waddled into our lives, and then into our hearts.

Do I need to start getting ready to say goodbye? :(

Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear about the predicament your friend is in. Luckily, you needn't be saying goodbye to him anytime soon.

Golurk are powered by an internal energy source that modern science knows little about, however it is unlikely that this is the root issue of your friend, at least not in the way you may think. When the seal that binds a Golurk's energy is damaged, instead of a decrease in activity, the Golurk goes into overdrive. The energy itself destabilizes, and the affected Golurk will become near-uncontrollable due to this excess of energy.

Your Golurk is most likely suffering from an imbalance in his internal energy. This is typically caused by close proximity to other powerful sources of spiritual or psychic energy, which has resulted in your Golurk's energy being weakened. While I can't completely diagnose or recommend treatment, as I haven't examined your buddy in person, my best recommendation is to keep him away from any high-energy fields or Pokemon that emit them. I would also recommend taking your friend back to where you found him, as the areas these Pokemon typically inhabit exude the energy best suited from them, and will help him rebalance himself. Then again, if you say he was "balled up" where you found him, it could be that the cause of his energy imbalance is nearby to his original home. If this is the case, DO NOT take him back, as it will only further harm him. Instead, contact your local authorities or Pokemon Rangers to investigate the site, as there may be a bigger issue in the area.

Most importantly, take him to a Pokemon Center or a local Specialist in ghost Pokemon. While I am certified in the care of the Golurk line, I dont know his physical or mental condition, and thus its best to seek help from the appropriate sources. Should all else fail, id be more than happy to treat him here at the lab for a bit. We have several Pokemon here specialized in evaluating and treating spirtual energy imbalances, and it could do wonders for your friend.

Golurk can live for millennia, and many theorize they can't actually "die" of natural causes due to their nature as constructed golem Pokemon. Nevertheless, they deserve the same quality of care and treatment as any other "mortal" Pokemon. I'm glad to see that you care for your big buddy, and I'm sure he appreciates you and your company as his trainer.

In some places, giving your partner a Luvdisc or even a Alomomola as a gift for valentine's is tradition, as they symbolize love in many cultures. What people forget is that these Luvdiscs and Alomomola are also living creatures, who require specific care and attention, and can't just be ignored in a fish tank all day. I can't tell you how many Luvdiscs and Alomomola come into the lab during the week following valentine's day every year, as people realize that their partner's sweet romantic gesture is actually a lot of work to care for.

So please, stick to chocolate and flowers this valentine's day. Both your partner, and heart-shaped pokemon everywhere, will thank you.

Specifically, I wish to cover the advent of so-called fossil "splicing", and it's rise as a tool to combine fossils, in order to create new species of pokemon.

I have been asked about my opinion on the recent creations made in Galar, and if I feel that this technique of splicing different fossils together to form a new organism is a benefit to the academic community, and if it merits further research.

I would like to make clear what my, and the majority of other fossil experts, opinion on this matter is: this is a gross perversion of the field of fossil revival and study, and has so many ethical issues that it is hard to fathom why some are ok with this abhorrent practice.

As stated in previous posts, I outlined how fossil revival works and the moral implications surrounding my field of study. The biggest note to take away from these posts is that fossil pokemon and their revival must be handled in a careful, professional, and safe manner. So, it's no big surprise that I and the many other reputable professionals in this field are furious that so many people are blatantly and willingly casting aside these standards, in favour of combining two extremely different specimens to form a Frankenstein-like abomination for no other reason that satisfying their sick curiosity.

Let me make this clear: you can't just shove two pieces of two different fossils together and expect to create anything other than an unnatural creature, whose very existence defies every notion of natural evolution.

This dangerous process has resulted in creatures so mismatched, they can barely live. Seriously, how could someone think combining the head of a water-breathing fish with the torso and legs of a ground dwelling creature would end well? The creatures created from this process live very short, miserable existences, and their suffering lies solely on the heads of those who willingly spat in the face of accepted scientific conduct and ethics.

So, should this process be further developed? Absolutely not. Splicing two separate organisms together isn't "groundbreaking" or "brave", it's stupid and criminal. It's a shame, as this tech showed potential. Imagine being able to splice two fragments of the same organism back together! So much more could be understood about these species Whose complete fossils have never been found!

So, to all my friends in Galar, be on the lookout for the supposed inventor and promoter of this horrid process, Ms. Cara Less (ironic her name is so fitting for her attitudes towards ethics and conduct). Warn people about the dangers of what she preaches, and never turn any Pokemon fossils, complete or not, over to her. Instead, contact Professors Magnolia or Sonia, I'm sure any fossil you find will be a boon to their actual research.

Hello! Thank you for your question, it's one that I seemed to be asked quite a bit!

As with all modern-day Pokemon, evolution is a form of maturity in many species. However, unlike puberty in us humans, evolution is not a forced process, but is instead a way for a species to grow and develop in new ways that they may want to. For example, one of my lab techs has a Skitty who is well past maturity, yet has never evolved simply due to her not wanting to. Evolution is therefore different for all individual Pokemon, based on an individual's desire to grow and change.

Why evolution takes place is down to natural selection and survival of the fittest. In nature, evolution occurs as a way of increasing the survivability of the species based on the enviroment that species is a part of. For example, a Charmander evolves into a Charizard because evolution grants a better chance for the species to survive in its natural habitat. This is also why some species of Pokemon needs specific stones or items, or need to be in a certain habitat, to evolve.

How many evolutions a species has depends on what adaptations they have to survive in nature. So, some species have no evolutions, while other have one or two.

So, it is not that all fossil pokemon can only evolve once, it's simply that most of the fossil Pokemon we've been able to revive only naturally have one evolutionary change. Aerodactyl is even an example of a fossil pokemon with no known evolution (not counting mega evolution). Perhaps there will come a day when a new fossil species is discovered that has two evolutions, but so far none have been found or documented.

Hello! Always a pleasure to make the acquaintance of a fellow fossil specialist.

Unfortunately, while I did intern in Galar during my Uni days under Professor Magnolia, I don't have the most expertise when it comes to Galarian fossils. This is mainly due to the fact that these fossils are so incredibly rare, to the point where no complete fossils have ever been found (to my knowledge), only fragments. This is theorized to be the result of massive geographical changes in the region between the time that these species went extinct and the modern day, destroying many fossilized remains or burying them under literal mountains of new sediment. Compounded with the fact that I'm a native of Sinnoh, and have never been fortunate enough to travel back to Galar since the end of my internship, I simply don't have as much experience with these particular fossils as I would like to.

All this being said, if you believe that you have truly found a complete, or even mostly-complete, fossil of a pre-historic Galar species, you might quite literally be making history! I would suggest immediantly reporting your find to your local archaeological authority, as specialists in these fossils would undoubtedly wish to see and study your find. I'd also recommend keeping the fossil itself safe from outside damage or contaminants in the meantime. Keep it in a space of consistent temperature, not to hot or cold, that shields it from the elements and any natural or unnatural contaminants.

While I can't give specific aid on the specific species your fossil belongs to, I hope I could at least provide some useful or interesting information. This is a very intriguing find, one that may shed more light on the species of that fossil.

Today's topic centers around a debate that has raged on for decades in the academic Pokemon community: is the revival of Pokemon from fossils and other preserved genetic material ethical?

As someone who has based his career on the study of fossil and ancient Pokemon, this debate hits close to home for me. Despite this however, I hope to present the most unbiased overview possible of this discussion, and my own opinion regarding the morality of Pokemon revival.

To begin, we must first understand how and why fossil Pokemon as we know them are revived. Revival of prehistoric Pokemon is, as one would assume, a relatively recent scientific breakthrough, with the technology first being successfully used around 30 years ago. The process, while complex, involves using tissue samples found in fossilized or preserved remains to create a new individual. That's right, fossil "revival" is in fact not what actually occurs in this field. The individual that the fossil or preserved matter belonged to isn't brought back from death, but instead a genetic copy of the organism is created. Basically, this process clones a new Pokemon from the DNA of a long deceased Pokemon. This technology could, in theory, be used to clone modern Pokemon, even people, but isn't due to the moral and scientific ramifications of creating exact copies of still living organisms.

Now that we understand the how, we must now discuss the why. In particular, why is the cloning of extinct species allowed, when the cloning of non-extinct species is? To put it bluntly, because knowledge. The revival of long dead species allows us to better understand our planet's past, and the history of life on earth. We have learned far more by observing living examples of fossil pokemon than we ever had studying the remains they left behind. In fact, we only know so much about certain species due to the revival of members of the species. My favorite example of this is the Kabuto line. For years, archeologists believed that Kabuto and Kabutops were separate and distinct species from one another, with some theorizing the Kabutops was a likely ancestor of the Scyther line. Imagine the shock when a revived Kabuto suddenly and unexpectedly evolved right in front of some of these very scientists! The information gleaned from these studies has advanced the larger understanding of Pokemon evolutionary history farther than any other studies on the same topic.

So, we now know why and how fossil Pokemon are revived. Now comes the main question: is it ethical to revive these ancient creatures, that nature never intended to live alongside modern people and Pokemon, in the pursuit of knowledge? In my opinion, it is ethical and moral to do so, only under the right conditions however. As stated previously, these Pokemon, while genetically identical, are not the same individuals the donor tissue comes from, so they have no memories of a past life that may cause emotional distress upon awakening in this new existence. However, these species still possess the instincts nature granted them through natural selection, and thus are not built for the modern world in the ways that today's Pokemon are. It is for this reason that the broader scientific community takes great care and effort in ensuring that fossil revival is only undertaken by proper professionals in controlled environments, and that the Pokemon themselves are able to live safe and happy lives, and are treated with the utmost care. Any person entrusted to care and raise a fossil pokemon, whether a trainer or researcher, has been deemed as trustworthy for the job by a board certified revival specialist, thus ensuring the proper care of these individual Pokemon. This dedication to safe practices is also why illegal revivals and the trafficking of fossil Pokemon are so heavily enforced by law enforcement and the Pokemon Rangers, as these Pokemon require specific care and training, and are unsuitable to be raised or trained by unqualified or untrustworthy people.

In short, while many are right to question the morality of fossil Pokemon revival, the practice, when done correctly, is truly beneficial to the academic community. As with everything related to the study of Pokemon, the care of Pokemon is at the forefront of every action taken. This is the reason why I and the broader scientific community believe that the revival of fossil Pokemon is an ethical scientific practice.

The obvious answer is yes, if like any other Pokemon, they wish to partner up with you. However, there are some major considerations you should take into account if you wish to train and live with a fossil or ancient Pokemon.

For fossil pokemon, the most important factor to consider is that they are, quite literally, out of time. Research has shown that revived fossil pokemon do not retain memories of their previous lives, however their instincts remain. Fossil Pokemon are not only waking up in a world now dominated in terms of population by humans, but also a world were few of their own kind exist. Their habitat and community are gone, and while they can't remember every detail they still feel the impact of losing the world they came from. Your job as their trainer is to help them cope and adjust to their new world. Teach them about life in our times, about the new species of Pokemon they've never encountered before, and how they can thrive alongside people and other Pokemon. This is not an easy journey, but one you must be committed to for the sake of your pre-historic buddy. Despite the trials and tribulations, the experiences you will make with your partner Pokemon will forge a bond that will last forever.

For a non-fossil ancient Pokemon, you must acknowledge that many of them have lived far longer than any human ever could. Some ancient Pokemon have quite literally seen the ages pass, and thus they expect some respect for their age and experiences. Of course, your partnership should be an equal relationship, so show your elders some respect and they should return the gesture. After all, if a 500 year old Honedge deems you a worthy partner, you have already gained their respect. Most importantly, make new experiences with them. As sad as it may seem, your ancient friend may very well outlive you, by centuries in some cases. So make sure they keep your memory fondly with them, so your friendship lasts longer than life itself.

Finally, you should never attempt to catch a mythical or legendary Pokemon. Not only will they mop the floor with you, they all have a role to play in the global ecosystem, one they are needed to do in order to protect nature's fragile balance.
