Pokemon Analysis #1: Chatot
Requested by: Plumfsh
Chatot is an interesting pokemon, even though it had a rocky beginning when it started. The reason being was it's signature move, Chatter, that stirred up some controversy. It wasn't the power that was the problem, (though 65 isn’t all that strong) but the mechanic behind its confusion rate. You could record anything into the ds's mic to affect Chatter's confusion rating, as it plays the recording when it attacks. However, said controversy is no longer an issue, as it no longer allows recording for Chatter. The trade off? Chatter now 100% confuses its enemy; and that makes it so much more useful.
First let's break down Chatot with its base stat spread and abilities: Hp: 76 Atk: 65 Def: 45 Sat: 92 Sdf: 42 Spe: 91
So this stat spread isn't gonna take home a lot of gold, but there's at least some potential I can see here. It won't be able to take a hit that well, but it's not meant to; it's a parrot, not a bird of prey. But like many birds, it is capable of hitting hard and fast.
Abilities: Keen Eye - acc can't be lowere, also ignores evasion gains Tangled feet - Evasion increases by 20% while confused (HA) Big Pecks - Def can't be lowered
The abilities here don't really seem all that appealing, but you gotta work with what you got.
Noteworthy moves Chatot can learn: Boomburst Hyper voice Uproar Chatter encore defog Nasty plot Taunt Heatwave
A thing to mention about these moves: all of these bypass substitute.
From this, Chatot would have an edge against those that either like to hide behind a substitute, or like to set up like through minimize, curse, or bulk up
Boomburst, Hyper Voice, or Uproar?
This is mostly preference on the format, or which you value more in battle.
Boomburst is upfront the strongest attack at Chatot's disposal with 140 pwr; only 3 other pokemon get it, And chatot can hurt the most with it, thanks to nasty plot. (The other three are: Noivern, Exploud, and Swellow)
However, if you are using Chatot in a doubles format, Boomburst is essentially Earthquake, in that it hurts it's ally too.
Hyper Voice is only 90 pwr, and hits both opponents; nothing too special, but at least your ally is unharmed.
Extra thing to note in doubles, attacks that hit multiple enemies deals only 75% of its damage. (this damage mitigation also applies to Boomburst)
Uproar is the same 90 pwr as Hyper Voice and locks chatot into using it for 3 turns, also no one can sleep while under this. This gives Uproar a clutch utility of no sleep, and since it hits a random opponent, the damage doesn't scale down. Maybe you just don't want the sleep threat against a dark void smeargle, spore, or even deny chesto-resto.
If you're thinking in doubles, you have a few options, otherwise in singles, Boomburst is a very strong choice.
Chatter may not be strong but always confusing really helps Encore has an effective lock down potential Defog clears screens and hazards, plus lowers evasion Nasty plot gives Chatot OHKO potential if it can get one or two off Taunt is taunt, it combos potentially well with encore Heat wave is a tutor move 95 pwr fire type, good coverage against steel types
So how I see Chatot is as a Saboteur type sweeper. It can lock down a setter and set up itself. You could either encore-taunt to force them to struggle/switch out, OR to encore-nasty plot to set up and take them out before the encore ends.
Now if you support Chatot with means to slow or stun the opponents pokemon to let it get set up, Chatot can cause immense damage or could even sweep an entire team.
OR you can have Chatot disrupt and annoy the opponents intentions with its own brand of support. Taunt, encore, uproar, defog can all disrupt many support strategies
There are a plethora of issues Chatot has to deal with, like priority, magic guard/bouce, higher speeds, or even soundproof. However, I still recommend giving a Chatot a try
For Natures, I would suggest either increased Satk or increased speed, depending on your preference, and EV train primarily speed and satk. Btw, in double battles, after a nasty plot and a life orb, chatot has about enough power with boomburst to down a Primal groudon, take from that what you will.
If I missed anything, Please let me know and I’ll either fix it or write up an addendum~
Chatot please!
Chatot sounds like an interesting pokemon to analyze; it’ll take me a little while but I’ll post up a more detailed analysis soon~
Thank you, plumfsh
Intro
Hey guys~ I know I’m not really that well known now, but I wanna be able to help people gain insight on various ways to make their pokemon usable; either out of curiosity or cause it’s your fav and everyone keeps bashing it.
And I know there are other sites that talk about pokemon like Smogon, but most of the times they’ll only think of them in one or two tiers that they themselves created. I try to think about strategies and suggestions either in doubles format or with a huge variety of pokemon in mind.
Also letting me think about pokemon strategies and helping others helps me too.
So please tell me:
Which pokemon would you like me to analyse in your quests to become a pokemon master?
