Raya and the Last Dragon felt like a bit of a missed opportunity to showcase the beautifully unique shapes and sensibilities of SEAsian art styles in their dragon design. I couldn’t help but try my hand at pushing that aesthetic in her design just a little bit more. Her colors in the official art are very unusual for the style, too…but I tried to keep them for this. I couldn’t help but include some gold, though. (also, this is all in good fun, there’s probably a million reasons why Disney went with the more Japanese fish-kirin look in the end. But!! I hope that this’ll inspire more folks in the area to make dragons inspired by the culture and mythology here!! Because it’s unique and beautiful!!)

Peace

The more I let nature in, the more I indulge it, give it time, sit amongst it, the silent observer, the more I connect with it, almost at a spiritual level. Like I could sit here on this chair and it would grow over me, the brambles intertwining between my legs, the birds nestling in my hat. It all just feels incredibly peaceful, to be one with everything, feel everything, not to think, not to worry or question, just to nurture the life around me.

We strive so much for tranquility, for paradise in our lives, but what if we are already there? What if we have already walked far beyond the pearly gates and have just forgotten what came before. And would that change everything? If She or He or It stood amongst us and said ‘Hey guys, you’re here, you made it, have fun!’ would we do things differently? So as I sit here, with nothing more than the sun and the birds and the greenfly walking over my skin, I ask myself, Is Hell just a place that we create because we feel like we don’t belong?

I feel like a preacher and as I read this back, it feels like a sermon. But I have no religion, I do not feel guided by any higher presence, but right now, in this moment, I feel a little peace.
