The meaning behind Solas tarot cards:Ā 1) The Hermit:Ā wisdom, intelligence, isolation, introspection, solitude, wandering the night with the light of knowledge.Ā 2) The Fool:Ā unconcern, exuberant, joyful, excited, forgetting the danger, walking on the precipice of a cliff, losing the path. 3)Ā The Tower: destruction, pain, desperation, massive change, faulty premises, chaos, death, disaster.
Oh.. Oh my gods!
His romance card meant that though heās happy, heās losing his way, the dinan'shiral. And he was on the verge of changing everything when he decided to take Lavellan to the waterfalls in Crestwood to tell her who he REALLY is, āthe precipice of a cliff.ā
If he did, heād be losing everything, his way, his mission and himself. Forgetting the dangers and what heās risking (his people) if it meant just being with Lavellan.
Oh my gods. Oh my gods.
Solas, nooooā¦.

Since @livewellwhiletimeremains asked, I made another compilation of weird Solas noises found in audio files. This one is even more bizzare because I have no idea where those files are used ingame and almost all companions have separate ones made by their voice actors. I also included audio effects used in first solavellan kiss scene at the end. So⦠enjoy?
I'm sure someone else has already gone over this, but I've been obsessing over Dragon Age again so I wanted to organize some thoughts on Elves and Spirits. So thinking about DA:I and Spirits, there's an interesting dichotomy of the fade being incredibly malleable physically, but unchanging ...mentally? What I mean by this is that while magic is incredibly easy and landscapes are constantly shifting, the Spirits themselves almost never change without some kind of major trauma (like becoming a demon).
In Trespasser we find out more lore about spirits from first hand accounts instead of the Chantry flavored propaganda we had gotten before then.
I'm picking some things out of codex entries from Vir Dithara here.
-The Deepest Fade-
The pages of this bookāmemory?āare instructions on how to reach the deepest parts of theĀ Fade, realms so far removed they're unmarked byĀ Dreamers:
"Epiphany requires a mind smooth as mirror glass, still as stone. Put aside ten years for practice, and the next hundred for searching. What others have learned will ease your journey. Those who never manifested outside the Fade will find it easier to find its stillest roots, but it is rare the compulsion overtakesĀ our brethren of the air."
The bolded comments imply three things to me.
1. The beings of that time used to live exclusively in the Fade, the tone comes across as "we used to be there, but now we're moved on to here."
2. The beings that lived outside the Fade could go back into it.
3. They viewed themselves as separate, but related to, spirits who never left the Fade. I'm not sure if they regarded themselves as Elves and Spirits as spirits, or as Elves are Spirits given flesh, which I suspect is closer to the correct mentality. Also this may have morphed over the ages. Pre and Post Evanuris could have had different prevailing attitudes.
Another entry, Birds of Fancy-
The pages of this bookāmemory?ādescribe a pair playing, colliding in the air, bodies formed for kissing, stroking lines of heat as molten as the sun. The dance is fluid, roiling, never ending, lovers tangled in a laughing knot that rolls on for years, a promise never to be parted, whatever ages come.
An annoyed thought intrudes, from one who marked this memory after it was recorded:
"By the gods, find a private chamber!"
This is very dreamlike, and seems to be an indicator that there was back and forth give between the Veil and the solid world. Magic was easier in the fade, Elves were immortal, so it stands to reason that some of the more solid aspects of the waking world, such as bodies, could be formed in the Fade. Not unrealistic since even in the time of Dragon Age there were more than a few times where "real" people ended up walking around in the Fade while awake.
Next up, -Attentive Listeners-
The pages of this bookāmemory?āshow a solemn group of elves in an ampitheater of living wood, entire trees grown into seats and stairs for the listeners to recline on. Two other elves and a spirit of learning are speaking in turn on ways to bend the properties of the material world when casting spells. At the end, the spirit, with the air of a senior lecturer, floats forward and booms in a surprisingly deep voice.
"The unchanging world is delicate: spells of power invite disaster and annihilation. The unchanging world is stubborn: the pull of the earth fiercely resists making fire run like water or stone rise like mist. The unchanging world rings with its own harmony. Listen with fearless hearts, and great works will unfold."
This is great because it's an account from a Spirit's point of view of the "unchanging world" pre Veil. This emphasizes the view that the Fade is malleable and flexible, the waking world is fixed and brittle. The balance to that is the residents of each one are the opposite emotionally/mentally. In the Fade, you ARE your description, if you are a Spirit of Compassion, you are all about being compassionate, with not much room for anything else.
Here's another codex entry that I think adds onto this notion:
-Raising the Sonallium-
The pages of this bookāmemory?ādescribe a heated argument between a group of well-dressedĀ elvesĀ inside an elaborately arched pavilion on an island floating in a void. In the distance, haloed by a blizzard of light, thousands of elves are maintaining an elaborate magical ritual that pulls raw essence from the Fade, funneled into a sphere in the air. Through the lens of the sphere can be seen a world of indigo waterfalls and rust-red jungles, and a temple palace so frescoed and cleverly carved, it is a masterpiece in itself.
The well-dressed elves' shouting grows so loud, it can be heard over the magic. One leaps at another, howling and pulling out a knife burning with prismatic flame.
"Architects of the Grand Sonallium (a gift from BlessedĀ SylaiseĀ to CleverĀ JuneĀ as thanks for a great favor) in friendly debate over the color of the palace's roof trim."
Hilarious, but it's telling that so many Elves were so enraged over something like the color of a roof, almost like children throwing a temper tantrum over not having the right color crayon available and not being able to express it in a meaningful way. Now it's doubtful all of those Elves came from Rage Spirits, but that strong a reaction could only come about due to feeling overwhelming rage. So my theory here is that one reason Spirits became flesh was to work shit out emotionally, FEEL other emotions/worldviews aside from the one ideal they glommed onto, and grow mentally and spiritually. That doesn't come easily, especially when unlike a child, you have full access to an adult body and powerful magic.
Which brings me to Solas and the Veil. Amongst all the horrible shit the Veil brought about (mortality to Elves, obliterating their centers of learning, opening them up to invasion and yet more slavery) the thing you can see that absolutely guts him is how Spirits are treated. They're enslaved, feared, used mercilessly and discarded like trash. The Chantry treats all of them as potential demons, cutting off as many friendly interactions as they can, making for a much more lonely existence. Before the Veil, they would wander the solid world as well as the Fade, while Elves would wander the Fade as well. Post Veil, they were cut off from manifesting easily in the solid world, the few interactions they have with solid people are confused dreams or terrified and suspicious mages, or mages corrupting them from their original purposes and effectively destroying them. (The Avar seem to have as close to a "normal" relationship with them as they used to have, but that's one tiny group of people compared to the entire world they used to have access to.)
He did this to his living kin, some (many?) of them existing from that time where he was awake and rebelling. How many of them wiped their memories rather than warp into something horrible from the trauma of losing their world, so they wouldn't even recognize him anymore? How many became warped, and remembered him in their new tormented forms? Wisdom was the exception to that, and she ended up destroyed in front of him anyways. (And now I've made myself sad.). How many Spirits were denied the ability to form bodies and grow. This conversation between Cole and Solas was a great insight:
Cole: Is there a way to save more spirits, Solas?
Solas: Not until the Veil is healed. The rifts draw spirits through, and the shock makes demons of them.
Cole: Pushing through makes you be yourself. You can hold onto the you. Being pulled through means you don't have enough you. You become what batters you, bruises your being.
Solas: Yes, exactly. Deliberately crossing the Veil requires that a spirit form will, personality. That concept of self gives a spirit the chance to maintain its nature. Wrenched into this world unwillingly by the rifts, spirits suffer the same fate as my friend.
Cole: Then we will help them.
Then there's this bit of dialogue that had me screaming. If you take Cole as more spirity with you to the Shattered Library, he gives this:
Cole: The Veil isnāt real. Itās false, fake, fabricated to forbid. Isnāt it wonderful?
Dorian: I was thinking āalarming,ā personally.
Cole: It means I belong here! Helping, healing the hurt! Iām not a wrong thing, a wreck, a ruin. Iām what I should be!
Long story longer, I don't think Solas's goal is to bring back the ancient Elves, not really. I think he's going to make it so his kin, the Spirits, can truly live again, defend themselves again, and become more "real" when they need to again.

Can we talk about the different ways Solas reacts to Lavellan after he breaks up with her???
No matter what, he has the last line in the scene and saysĀ āIām sorry,ā but the way he walks away is so different depending on what emotion she approaches the situation with.
Like when she begs him not to go and reaches for him, he backs away because he doesnāt know if he can handle her touching him again. He turns and he walks away quickly, not giving himself an option to change his mind. Because if he does, if he lets her catch him, he may give up his whole mission just to be with her.
But when sheās matter-of-fact and just straight up tells him he hurt her, with no pleading to stay and no lashing out, he turns and walks away with his head down. Heās carrying even more shame on his shoulders, this is just one more thing thatās his fault. One more person heās hurt.
And when sheās angry he allows her to hit him, he just stands there and takes it. Because these touches arenāt kind, they wonāt lure him back in. Theyāre pushing him further away.Ā He feels like he deserves it and like he doesnāt deserve her, so he stands there and watches his one shot at being happy walk away.
Do you think the Old Gods/Archdemons are the keys to the Evanuris' prison? And that the grey wardens killing them would have unleashed them?
I think it has to be something like that, or he wouldnāt get so worked up. But Iām not convinced the Archdemons are imprisoning the Evanuris in particular, cause the Evanurisā prison is the Veil itself, and Solas wants to take down the Veil - he seems to agree that tearing down the Veil would free the Evanuris, but says he āhas plansā for dealing with that. Whereas he gets very upset at the idea of killing the Old Gods and freeing whatever theyāre holding back.
Solas had been fighting the Evanuris for a while before he finally put up the Veil, so there was a tipping point, and it wasnāt just Mythalās murder. So what else could killing the Old Gods possibly unleash? Iām reminded again of the scene description I found in the game files of a particular hard-to-find ruin in Trespasser:
Other details too:
āHail Mythal, adjudicator and savior! She has struck down the pillars of the earth and rendered their demesne unto the People! Praise her name forever!ā
For a moment, the scent of blood fills the air, and there is a vivid image of green vines growing and enveloping a sphere of fire.
The vision grows dark. An aeon seems to pass. Then the runes crackle, as if filled with an angry energy. A new vision appears: elves collapsing caverns, sealing the Deep Roads with stone and magic.
Terror, heart-pounding, ice-cold, as the last of the spells is cast.
A voice whispers: āWhat the Evanuris in their greed could unleash would end us all. Let this place be forgotten. Let no one wake its anger. The People must rise before their false gods destroy them all."ā (x)
āThe runes say the Evanuris fought the Titans. They mined their bodies for lyrium and⦠something else. Itās not clear.ā
ā-each time she entered the Void, Andruil suffered longer and longer periods of madness after returning. Andruil put on armor made of the Void, and all forgot her true face. She made weapons of darkness, and plague ate her lands. She howled things meant to be forgotten, and the other gods became fearful Andruil would hunt them in turn.ā (x)
āThe fools who first unleashed the Blight upon this world thought they were unlocking ultimate power.ā
āHad I not created the Veil, the Evanuris would have destroyed the entire world.ā
"He broke the dreams to stop the old dreams from waking. The wolf chews its leg off to escape the trap.ā
āThey made bodies from the earth. And the earth was afraid. It fought back. But they made it forget.ā
Itās not the Evanuris themselves, itās what the Evanuris were doing. Something so bad that Elvhenan had to be destroyed (and the world cut off from the Fade) to stop the Evanuris from unleashing it. Something that Solas never even hints at in passing lest it be discovered. āEvery alternative was worse.ā
Weāve seen two different illustrations of what exactly the Seven Seals (presumably the archdemons) are holding back. I think both the many-eyed thing and the lyrium idol are representing the same thing. At this point, Iām taking the red lyrium idol to be a symbol and not what is actually locked away.
So what could it be? What are the āold dreams?ā What is sleeping that would be angry if they woke up? It could honestly be anything - the impossibly large sleeping Titans waking up/becoming blighted and striding the land, destroying everything with earthquakes, a Blight beyond reckoning that is only barely being held back, the Forbidden/Forgotten ones, or, yeah, I guess it could be the Evanuris themselves, Blighted beyond recognition. Or it could be something else we havenāt seen - theyāre still introducing new concepts.
But whatever it is, Solas is worried af about it, but he hasnāt talked openly about it.

Nice try but the first 3 are not gay. You Tumblr degenerate send your wishful thinking. seriously do you people have to ruin everythingā¦
Deadpool is pansexual. Loki is bisexual and gender fluid. Wonder Woman is bisexual like all the Amazons. Educate yourself about comic canon before saying something ridiculous.
Do you have any reliable sources that can back this up?
You mean⦠besides the fucking comics?!
Wonder Woman was shown as canonically bisexual in the main DCU continuity in Wonder Woman: Year One (She was heavily implied to be numerous times before then but it was stated canonically in that comic that she had romantic and sexual relationships with multiple Amazons and left her girlfriend behind to journey to our world to stop the threat of Ares sons bringing chaos and war to the world)
Sheās also canonically bisexual in Wonder Woman: Earth One where she straight up tells Steve Trevor that another Amazon is her lover and also in DC Comics Bombshells where she and Mera were girlfriends
Loki is canonically bisexual and generfluidā¦they have shifted from male to female multiple times stating that both are their real form and Odin, Lokiās father, referred to Loki as āTheir child who is both male and femaleā in a published Marvel comics
And anyone who thinks Deadpool is straight has not only never read the comics but also apparently never been to see either movie either because Iām not sure what part of Deadpool grabbing Colossusās chrome plated ass and dry humping him made them think āYeah this is a Totally Straight Hetero Just Bros Being Brosā
Fake fans š Read the comics. all your faves are queer
Wait did people literally not get the memo on any of this?
Fake fanboys act like google is broken and literally the only way they can acquire information is by harassing queer ppl on tumblrĀ with these inane questions.
So I have⦠more gifs of Solas than I care to admit right now. But this one I reblogged recently as part of a set of flycam images and it has the best angle on his mouth that Iāve seen so far. And I want to use this to talk about⦠Solas lying. I saw a post (which I agreed with at the time) that counters the general consensus that Solas only/almost only lies by ommission with the fact that he apparently used tongue when they kissed, but when Lavellan brought it up afterwards, he denied it.Ā āI did no such thing!ā Now referencing the aforementioned ungodly amount of kiss gifs, I donāt actually see him opening his mouth during any of the other kisses in this scene, just this very first opening one. There was tension before the kiss, but Lavellan made the move, and she was perhaps a liiiiittle more cogent here than the desperately lonely man who just had his dream come true for a moment. And hereās where I just - I just have to *laugh* - I think he TRULY didnāt realize he was doing it. If you⦠*ahem* zoom way in and really observe what his tongue is doing, the touch is pretty⦠delicate, actually. I donāt think Solas meant to. I think he just reacted. But Lavellan felt it, of course. So when she mentions it in the rotunda, he is honestly embarrassed and surprised, *because he had no idea*. All the later kisses were conscious, and those (if my observations are correct) had no tongue. So Solas is not a liar. Just a subconsciously mouthy kisser.
On the subject, Iād be willing to bet that our Inquisitorās relationship with Solas will be so important in DA:IV.Ā
A high-approval or romanced Inquisitor may just be enough of an influence that Solas, as a whole, is more empathetic, more willing to lay down his cause for a lover or a friend.Ā
A low-approval Inquisitor, however, may result in an apathetic Solas, a man who will not listen to reason, and a plan that can only be stopped by his death.Ā
A few days ago, I commented on something Patrick Weekes wrote on twitter - something like āI believe that Patrick will not forget about Solasmancersā and Weekes liked it. At least heās aware of the fans and heās the person who hacked into the approval system in Trespasser to make it possible that Cole can approve of an Inquisitor who wonāt give up on Solas.
He is exactly the kind of person who would give us this choice.
Yes, I have a lot of faith in Weekes.
I truly believe that, from its very conception, Solasās romance was devised as a way to save this man from himself. Inquisition is about empathy, as the talented @corseque once aptly put it, as is all of the Dragon Age series, arguably. Whether or not you believe that, the fact of the matter is that the player is nearly always offered choices. Every player was given the chance to open up to Solas, to connect with him, to even love him. To me, it is clear that there is going to be a choice based on this. As you said, I also do not think Weekes will forget about those of us who chose to extend our compassion and love Solas. We may, in the end, be some of the few to save himāand Thedas.

āWhatever you need, we can find together.ā
āNo, we canāt. Youāll see. Iām sorryā
oh the way he pulls his hand back and reaches out to fend her offĀ
pain
Muahahah the Walk Cycle Queen strikes again!
@corseque uploaded this dual gifset of Solas being obstinate and I was like, āWait a second I donāt remember the things you can say as a friend!ā So I went back and played through them and wouldnāt you know it, I found something!
The first walk cycle is stiff and a little awkward as he walks away from a befriended Inquisitor after having taken their hand and bidden them farewell. This is probably the stiffest gait Iāve ever seen from him in the game, probably because weāve never seen him as Fenāharel before, completely in his element (his walk to Mythal was cautious and slow, weighed down.) This is an authoritative, confident stride that assumes power and respect, accompanied with his reverse crossed arms is like looking at another side of him (which we do throughout this cutscene.) Leaving a friend behind is tough, but his duty and goals are at the forefront of his mind as he departs.
The second walk cycle might as well be a completely different person. Heās not confident, rather he looks drained despite taking the mark from her. Heās dragging his feet, his hands loose by his sides as he shuffles slowly back to the eluvian in no hurry to leave her again, but he has to. The conversation severely hampered his pace through his plans, and leaving is probably the last thing he wants to do, because that means he can never go back on his word (even if he knows heād never break off his plans.) The longer heās in the same place with her, the more he can entertain the meager, false hope that he will stay, because once he crosses the threshold, all he can do is hope against hope that sheāll prove to him that heās wrong about everything.
Notice the distance the gifs start for both of these to really take in the difference in distance. They are the exact same frame rate with the same amount of frames. In the first, heās brisk, almost in a hurry to get out. In the second, it will take him at least three times as long to reach the mirror at that pace if not longer. Heās already defeated, at least on one front.
Solas Gifset Masterpost
The things people catch with fly cam break my heart.
THIS is right in the vhenan
wow i only liked this post, i didnāt reblog so reblog it is
I love Solasā step back here. Like the weight of just how much he cares is a little more than he can handle right now.
heās so afraid sheāll touch him omg
Seriously, who else could possibly make the Dread Wolf take a step back?
one of my favorites, heās weak for her, he knows it and is on guard about letting her too close, because he has to keep the distance to uphold his mission.
OMG I love this this is so preciousā¦.
āThis world is an abomination. It must never come to pass.ā
What always gets to me here is he doesnāt say, āWe can all be savedā, itās āTHEY can all be saved.ā He doesnāt include himself, regardless of the timeline. Even if heās on his way to being romanced, Solas already gives in to the fact that his path is going to end up with him dying, one way or another.
Justā¦fuckingā¦.NO.
Ugh.
I Donāt need this negativity!!!!
Just a nice romantic edit of Solas feeling Lavellan up with his thigh, no big deal.
Lets just break this down a secā¦
Not ONLY is he apparently smothering your mouth with his lips ( from the angle we were originally given) but, for his first kiss, this guy is so frustrated he must BEND you OVER, forcing you to cling to his body, WHILE riding his thigh! T
his guy made sure you felt EVERYTHING he could possibly do to you, in one fell stroke!Ā
No wonder your Lavellan looked so..windedO_O before he goes in for a SECOND kiss!Ā
No wonder he pulled away; Solas was already getting hot and heavy in this fade dream, he just managed to snap out of it in time before things went too far!
It makes me wonder if this was partially the fault of previous fade dreams he may have had about you;
Leading up to this one- then he realizes-
HOLy sh** wait- this is REAL Lavellan! Ialmostforgot!! stopstopstopstopstop! weshouldnāt!
What this genius up here said ^
On top of that, after some real life scientific tests (for science), the lifting motion in his thigh directly stimulates the clitoris. Direct pressure. I have to make a gif of it to show you, but, also what you see through flycam is that the first thing he does is grab your hips and pull them to his before he even gets his thigh in there. It starts out pleasurable to him and then he does a movement that can only really benefit you (the thigh).
Pretty suave and, dare I say, experienced, if you ask me.

Origins leaked Inquisition DLC āTrespasserā in 2009
SPOILERS
Ppl have been squeeing about this since 2014 but Iām posting because I ran across it just now and got excited. If you havenāt jumped on the FenāHarel=Shartan=Solas/Mythal=Andraste=Flemeth train, then choo choo, mofos, welcome aboard.
In Origins, when you meet the image/shadow/remnant/memory of Shartan on the way to the Urn of Sacred Ashes, he riddles you this:
āIād neither a guest nor a trespasser be; in this place I belong, that belongs also to me.ā
Come on, yāall. Look at this bald. Rebel. Elf. Who has been depicted holding orbs and keys and just generally resembling Solas.
After you answer home,Ā he says:
āIt was my dream for the people to have a home of their own, where we would have no masters but ourselves.ā
In short, blame everything on Solas (and all of his previous incarnations) because everything is his fault always.
2 am | Solavellan
Imagine the first time Solas and Lavellan sleep beside each other.
Imagine him thinking: āHow long has it been since I was last this close to another person?ā
Imagine her thinking that perhaps this is strange, too muchā for both of them, too soon.
Butā¦
ā
It is the wee hours and you are both very tired and it is late and you would very much like to remain together.
Imagine Solas sitting down on the edge of the bed, he is at ease, any inner hesitancy wiped from his tired face.
The room is warm and dry and your belly is full.
You sit down too and fall onto your side and spread your fingers over the quilt, callouses and dry skin catching on the fabric pills on the worn blanket.
Solas lays down soon after you and as soon as his back hits the bed, you reach for him.
He is warm and so suddenly a person.
He has the thrumming heart, the breathing lungs of a person.
He is real.
Imagine you are bold and affectionate in your fatigue and reach an arm out across his chest and grip at his arm, pulling yourself against him.
You wiggle closer and you both laugh, soft and breathy because today was long and difficult and tomorrow looks to be much the same.
But tonight you can sleep and be safe.
He does not touch you at first, but you burrow against him, throw your ankle over his and nudge his shoulder with your own.
āSāfineā you mumble against wherever your mouth is pressed: neck or shoulder or chest.
He breathes and you can hear his heart th-thmp th-thmp - a sound you will remember, later, when things are different.
He turns so suddenly into you that one of your hands is trapped uncomfortably between you, the other poised above both your heads.
He holds you close, fingers pressing into the flesh of your hip and side so tightly that you almost ask him to let go.
But the wet hitch in his steady breathing stops you.
His face is buried where yours once was on his own body, against your neck and you can smell the snap of the peppermint oil you applied to your battle sore muscles in the space between you.
You drop your free hand to the curve of his skull and note that the skin there is smooth and dry and without the faintest hint of new growth.
You cradle his head to your body and both fall into a deep and uninterrupted sleep, not even a dream between you.
