On his way to see his adopted mother on mothers day and feelin himself off some gin, Avery Baxter ask some skaters if he could try their board.
Washington Heights // Hamilton Skate Park
Manual Double Exposure // 35mm Film // Shot with Minolta x-370
- I shot these photos this past summer with an idea to juxtapoz the culture of the neighborhood with skate culture. The Hamilton Bridge Skate Park located in the borough of Manhattan opened up 2 years ago and has become a haven for all the skate rats in the community. It’s located directly under the NJ Turnpike and adjacent to the Harlem River Drive. While street vendors, farmers markets, boutiques, lounges, restaurants and barber shops are bustling with customers directly below all the madness young skaters are getting together and working on their latest tricks, helping new skate rats and occasionally chugging beers. As a female who occasionally dabbles in the art of skating I was always too shy to go into the park to practice my ollies and drop ins. It’s enough being the only female in the park but to be a rookie as well can be a little nerve racking. One day I said fuck it and went to check out the scene. As I entered the park and started to do my rounds young skaters came up to introduce themselves and give me tips on better ways to approach my board. It was all love from there.
These photos are a dedicated to all the skate rats uptown. A Homage to the community that is happening under these mean streets.
Featured skaters: Rainer Peralta & Joey Pops of @miraconyo

What is a manual double exposure?
Double exposure is when you overlap two photos to create one image. When shooting manually with film it’s not as easy as the apps on your phone make it. Using my Minolta X-370 my first shots were of the skaters. After my last shot on the roll I rewinded the film and instead of fulling rewinding it I reloaded the same film and took to the streets for the second image to overlap, not fully knowing exactly what shots were overlapping. An element of surprise.

“As the Brujas have increased, in members and lore, so has their activism. What began in parks and playgrounds now extends into other arenas of organizing. Some of the women said they had spoken out at City Council hearings on rezoning plans; helped marshal protesters for rallies fighting mass incarceration; and put together open-mike nights highlighting underserved voices.
Increasingly, the Brujas have become interested in fostering a sense of community among minority youths across the city. In June, the group collaborated with By Us for Us, a project advocating Black-Asian solidarity, to organize a party called Anti-Prom at a former factory in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. The gathering was an effervescent celebration of people usually sidelined by traditional prom culture, namely L.G.B.T. racial and ethnic minorities.
Of late, the Brujas have been busy with their most ambitious effort yet: a free alternative camp for young people with little else to pass the languid summer months. The program is hardly formal, but it has attracted a loyal following, said Ms. Gil, with games of capture the flag, nutrition classes, alternative medicine workshops and hikes through Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx”
