Hi! I love your Hannibal metas! I was just wondering, when Will and Hannibal are sitting in front of the primavera painting, they are shown with a painting above each of their heads. This seems significant (of course it must be, it's Hannibal!). Do you know whom the paintings depict and how that might be relevant?
Hi thanks! I didn't know but I looked into it and the portrait behind Hannibal is actually there but the portrait behind Will is not. In real life it's in Germany. So it's most definitely deliberate.
Since this portrait of the man with the medal is actually in the Uffizi gallery it’s not as deliberate as the portrait behind Will. But, it’s still interesting that the article says that the subject of the portrait is almost as mysterious as the Mona Lisa. I think that’s fitting for Hannibal.
The portrait behind Will though is very deliberate as I said. The article talks about how it’s probably of a muse of Botticelli and that it’s very idealized, like Botticelli trying to paint the “perfect woman” essentially. It also notes that it is sexualized, by the standards of the time. Why would they choose this for Will? If I had to guess I think it’s saying that he is the ideal for Hannibal. it’s not hard to see how this would be the case since Hannibal actually says that about Will in Mizumono when he’s talking about the imago:
Says in the script that Hannibal believed that Will was his ideal. Basically, he believed that Will was the physical embodiment of perfection for him. The imago definition is interesting too:
The deleted dialogue when Bedelia says that Hannibal was not influenced socially by anyone until Will fits with this very well:
Bedelia: Hannibal is the social anti social. Meaning he isn’t easily influenced. Hannibal's capacity to be shaped by his social environment seemed nonexistent before he met Will Graham.
Taken together I’d say it’s showing a mysterious man (Hannibal) and his ideal partner (Will) which fits with the entirety of the series pictured in the scene with two portraits behind them.
