First film I saw this year. Normally it's a tradition of mine to have the first one be something I missed from December, and this is no different. The two leads, Will Arnett and Laura Dern, are the backbone of the film. Their performances are what kept me engaged the whole way through. While it's obvious the dramatic scenes would be well acted, it's the stand up sections that impressed me most. There's a real love for the craft and for open mic nights in general that can be felt even in the scenes discussing them as well as depicting. Score and editing were perfectly fine, though there was one scene that was suddenly impressive on both fronts before retuning to the standard fare. By the end I was actually completely on both the leads' sides. Haven't seen a relationship drama succeed that in a hot minute. Perfect film to start the year to, and to start chronicling my reviews. I would recommend this film if you saw Marriage Story and thought "But what if they communicated healthier" or if you just like seeing Will Arnett in things like me.
