which i always thought was just ,,, better? idk western naming system always confused me why do you take your husbandβs last name at all, what if you get divorced or smth
That one DNF fic, flower from 1970, but make it Skully x Yuu.
Basically, while cleaning out Ramshackle, Yuu finds an old dust covered telephone that somehow connects to the past and present of the dorm. Through it, they can talk to Skully, keeping him updated with their life and everything happening on their side.
After the event. Skully probably miss the nrc cast, especially existing in completely different timelines. Iβm not sure whether Skully and Yuu should remember what happened, or if it would be better for neither of them to remember.
A cough escaped Yuu as they opened the window. Yet another strange, hidden room in Ramshackle was discovered and the magicless found themself trying to clean it.
Which was a chore when half the resident can't hold a broom and the other simply refused to.
They sighed, fixing their cleaning gloves and mask on to get back to work.
Not long passed as they lifted a box up on a dainty coffee table, lightly brushing the dust on top of it off. They peered inside, being met with a vintage rotary phone.
βWoah! Super cute!β They commented, taking it out the box before pushing it off the table to make room for the phone.
The box fell with a soft thud as they carefully placed the rotary phone and taking a good look at it. It was decorated with little details, pumpkins, skulls and ghosty patterns around its side.
They took note that it was a very early, fancy model of the kind and was actually very clean having been in a box this entire timeβwhich frankly interests them even more.
βMaybe I could fix this up and get it to work again?β They played around, picking up the receiver to their ear and spinning a few numbers. βHm?β
A paper caught their eye, something that fell out the box. They picked it up off the floor, must have been under the phone. It was small but long and flipping it around, they see a string of numbers.
How strange, the old owner of the phone maybe?
Just to mess around, they redial the phone and spinned the number in. To their surprise, it started ringing.
And someone picked up.
βHello?β
β?!β
Yuu checked behind the phone, no cords. Was it magic? It has to be. It startled them so badly that they just stared into space for a few minutes.
That is until, the voice spoke again. βPardon me, is anyone there?β
βOh! Uh, hello! Sβsorry, I just found this number with a uh, this super cute phone...β Yuu quickly responded back, fiddling with the cord out of habit.
βOh, I see...β The speaker's voiced seemed very familiar as he seemed to trail off, which prompted Yuu to perk up.
βWell! Since I already uh, got you... here... Can I ask who this is?β They leaned against the window, looking out of it as the wind blew gently.
The voice hesitated, but answered nonetheless. β... My name is Skully. Skully J. Graves.β
Yuu almost dropped the phone.
They went silent for a moment.
How would Skully answer the phone? Can ghosts communicate through phones here? But if they could then wouldn't he have tried talking to them earlier? Would he?
The prefect couldn't help but lose the feeling in their knees and promptly sat on the dusty floor.
βSβSkully?β
β... Yes..?β
βIt's me. Yuu.β
They could almost hear him fall back from shock, a visual that made them chuckle.
βYβYuu?! You called me..! How did you get this number... Wait, no, where are you calling from?! I haven't heard from you in so long, I'd love to see you again, my dear Yuu!β He rambled excitedly, picturing him with his bright, childish smile on his face almost made them sad.
They still mustered up a somber smile, though he can't see it. βI... I'm at Night Raven.β
βWhat?!β He replied, βYou're here?! Where? Did you enroll recently? Although it's quite a late enrollment, I'm not opposed to going to the same school as you and... oh dear, and what of Sebek and the others? Is Grim with you too?β
Yuu leaned against the wall, listening to him ramble on and on was adorable. Something they didn't realize they missed. Something they can't believe they forgot for a long while.
Although, hearing it now and realizing the distance, maybe it was for the best. βSkully. We can't see each other.β
This immediately dampens his mood, a saddened tone questioning them this time. βWhat..? Why?β
They stayed silent for a moment, not completely sure how to explain the situation to him.
He didn't speak either, awaiting who he assumed was his friend's response. βIs it..." He hesitates, "Am Iβ?"
βWe're from different time periods.β
βHuh?β
Yuu scratched the back of their neck, keeping a level head for the most part. βI wish we could see each other again, honestly. But turns out you're way back in the past and... I'm in the future technically.β They explained best they could.
He seemed to be silent at first, it felt like hours before a response finally came. βThat's fine.β
βHm?β
His voice seemed to perk up once more. βIt is a pleasure simply to hear your voice again, my dear Yuu.β
His comment caught them a bit off guard, a rush of red on their cheeks as they tried to laugh it off. It almost sounded romantic in their mind.
βPft... You are a charmer, huh?β He laughed along with them, delighted in the change of the magicless prefect's mood.
βTell me, my lovely companion,β He inquired softly, βhow have you and the others been? How is Sebek and Grim?β
And they told him. As much as they could. How everyone was doing since he last saw them, how he is known as the King of Halloween in their present. How their memories of their days in Halloween Town were fuzzy and barely recovered.
They weren't sure how much time had passed, it felt like reuniting with an old friend honestly. Which... also isn't too far off from the current situation.
The only thing that managed to break Yuu's attention off the phone was the screeching of an all too familiar direbeast.
βHench human! Grr! Where are you!? Are you playing that stupid hide and seek game again?!β Yuu lifted their head towards the door, his voice is getting closer.
It's probably best for them to see what he wants before he starts throwing a tantrum, βUh, sorry Skully, I think I have to go.β
βWait, Yuu!β They stopped themself from returning the receiver back in its place.
They brought it up to their ear curiously. βSkully?β
βI...β The heard him sigh. βI wish to hear you again, if it isn't too much trouble.β
Yuu paused. Before smiling once more.
βNot at all.β They could almost feel his grin through the phone. βWe'll talk again tomorrow, Skully. See you.β
i have THOUGHTS on caine making the circus and everything around it but more specifically, i have thoughts on caine making the moon.
literally the first ever line the moon is heard saying is "hello, caine, i love you". how much are you willing to bet he's heard that sooo many times in his life? nothing? and you'd probably be right to do so. this pitiful little AI has probably never heard - or very rarely heard - those words said to him.
she asks to hang out with him ("do you think after this, maybe we could..."), she compliments his adventure and reassures him ("they look happy") and she shows him love and respect. but caine made her do all of that. she is an NPC, one that he controls. and he made her be this kind to him specifically because the humans never would be.

also i'll just go ahead and be a deranged homosexual and say he could also be making up for the fact that he really really really really REALLY wanted to hear that from a CERTAIN SOMEONE cough cough kinger cough cough maybe even queenie for my caine x checkmates enjoyers cough cough cough i wonder who that would be. who said allat. anyways! he's not okay
ok so i was wrong LMAOOO apparently she did that of her own free will which. i don't exactly know how to interpret? caine is more meaningful than he knows? or since it's gooseworx voicing the moon, then is this showing her love for her character? idk but i feel a little dumb now aha
i try not to reply to posts usually but i just wanna give my two cents on this [below cut in case some ppl haven't seen the finale]
i think it's supposed to show that caine is more loved than he thinks he is or at least, that he's been so focused on trying to make the humans love them that he never considered that the other npcs, like the moon, already loves him
like in another reblog said, he doesn't acknowledge and even ignores moon the times she spoke. this is played off by jokes for him bc he never considered npcs as important as humans [deleting gummigoo without a second thought n reusing him again later].
but in the end, he finally acknowledged that he never programmed the moon to say she loved him. she did it out of her own volition and lets him know it.
just like caine loved his creator, caine's creations loved him too.
