Alex wasn't sure exactly why she was going to this funeral. It wasn't like she was particularly close with the man in the end, but there was a time where she would have called him a friend and she knew, deep down, behind all of those walls she put up, it was the right thing to do. Show up. Show face. Maybe try and get a laugh or a smile out of a couple of people... Although, maybe that was insensitive? All she knew is that at her last funeral, the one for her Mom and for George, she got so fucking sick of the frowns and I'm sorry's. She wished someone had cracked a joke or two, made things feel a bit fucking lighter.
She stayed right at the back for the service, spent more time looking around the crowd, trying to see if she could see anything that gave anyone away. Wasn't it always in those cheesy crime drama films that the murderer attended these types of things for their sick pleasure and amusement? What did she even look for anyway? She doubted there would be anything so obvious as a sign - if SHE could pick up on something like that, lord have mercy on why the Police hadn't caught them yet.
The service ended and Alex was the first one to spin around and go outside, almost immediately turning the corner into the backside of the venue and pulling out a cigarette. At least, she thought she was the first one out. Turns out one person had beat her around here. "Yo, yeah," Alex breathed out, nodding as she placed the cig between her lips. "Good turn out though, right? Like, it was a nice service 'n all that shit," she shrugged as she lit the stick. "Still fuckin' madness though," she shook her head. "Shittt..."
antoinette had been aware of the strain that has formed between alex and devon, before the two finally stopped talking. they used to be good friends, at least in her eyes, until for some reason, the two weren't in good terms anymore. she hoped that maybe...just maybe, alex showed up to his funeral, perhaps, for closure, mend things even if it's too late. regardless of how alex is right now, standing before her, she hoped that was the intention. nobody should carry the weight of something like that for as long as they live and carry it to their death.
she herself lost someone she's very close with, devon was a great man, he had been nothing but good to anyone, whether he knew them or not. why would somebody ever do something as heinous as this to somebody like him?
"alex... you two used to have a good relationship, he was good to you, aren't you fuckin' bothered by all this?" she couldn't help but ask, perhaps there are things that she isn't aware of, whatever happened between the two of them not-so-long ago. "what....ever happened with that?"
Nothing about today felt real. Not even the people around her. Whenever anyone spoke, their words felt a million miles away. Like she was alone in her own space of darkness and they were all just passing through it. After a while, the effort of pretending to be present became too much. The weight of everything was already heavy enough without having to hear I’m sorry for your loss over and over again.
Relief finally hit the moment she pushed through the doors and stepped outside. She wasn't sure what felt better, their air hitting her face, or taking the breath she didn't realize she was holding. Her fingers played with the bracelet around her wrist as she started down the steps. She was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn’t notice she’d drifted toward Antoinette until she was already there. Her head lifted slightly, surprise flickering across her features as she took the other girl in. “I know,” she said softly. Genevieve slipped her purse open, rummaging for a moment before pulling out a small pack of tissues. “Here.” She opened it and held it out to her.
the lost had hit antoinette the day she had found out, seeing the news felt unreal, when the night before she was just talking to devon over the phone, catching him up on her latest shenanigans at the midnight tease, hearing his laugh for the last time....she never thought that was it. she would never see him in her life anymore. she takes a tissue from genevieve, wiping the tears on her cheeks. "i just keep on hoping he's in a better place now, you know? away from this... i just...." she lets out a ragged exhale. "he doesn't deserve what happened to him, i just can't understand why..."
Enzo had left to get some space of his own, he wasn't great around a lot of people and today was clearly showing that Devon was loved by many. "Yeah.. uh, it really does suck." He let out a deep, long sigh. He sucked at making others feel better. He knew Devon but not as well as a lot of people that were here today, in Enzo's line of work becoming great friends with your clients never really went well. He had showed up to basically show respect for the guy.
"He was a great guy. It's a shame that this happened to him. I don't know why anyone would do this to anyone." Enzo placed his hands in the pockets of his trousers as he stood by Toni feeling a little awkward.
she feels like she was stuck in a nightmare where she's never going to wake up again. well, it's one nightmare after another. meeting devon when she moved to ellswick... things became easier, she had a friend, turned into one of her closest friends, then eventually family. he was like a brother to her.
it was the first time enzo would see her in this state, unlike her usual mood at the midnight tease. she usually hides behind her mask, sort of like a character when she's performing for people. not like this, she couldn't hide how shaken up she was by it all, unlike weeks before this when the news came out. "sorry, enzo, i..." she takes a couple of deep exhales. "it's just been a rough day...i can't stand it, seeing him for the last time like that."
maisie stayed quiet for a moment, letting her finish, letting the words sit instead of rushing to fill the space. ❝ that doesn't sound stupid at all. ❞ she said firmly, and shook her head. ❝ you're doing your damn hardest, trying to get through this, however you can. ❞
maisie's expression softened slightly. ❝ if anything, he might be a little worried that you're not taking the time to look after yourself. we can run from these terrible feelings as much as we want to, but it always catches up to us. one way or another. ❞ she was concerned for toni, but who was maisie to say how someone should or shouldn't grieve ?? ❝ but i know that he'd be proud of you for keeping on going. and there's no way in hell that devon would hate you for that. that's not the devon we know. ❞
"you know... he would laugh at me for the chaotic shit i have been doing the past couple of weeks..." she chuckles at herself. "but he'd give me good advice. he always did that, you know? beneath all that goofiness you see...or hear, he's really smart, really good at what he did."
"i've been used to losing people, my whole life." she starts, pacing around in front of the other as she takes a hit from the cigarette, before continuing. "i lost my mom when i was a kid, left my dad because he was being a big fucking prick, i—" she realizes she was pouring her soul out to somebody she's not really had conversations like this before. "sorry...it just fucking hurts. i just don't fuckin' understand...why him? he doesn't fucking deserve it... he was good to everybody..."

maisie didn't hesitate, already reaching into her bag to offer the cigarette, her lighter following a second later. ❝ here, ❞ she said softly. she stayed close, not crowding - just enough that antoinette wouldn't feel alone. ❝ i don't think he'd hold it against you today of all days. we all have our vices. ❞
her gaze flicked toward her then, catching what she hadn't quite managed to hide, and something in her expression softened. ❝ i don't think there's any version of this that makes sense, ❞ she admitted, voice low. ❝ not really. ❞ she let that sit for a moment before adding - ❝ but you don't have to figure it out right now. ❞ maisie wasn't even sure if what she was saying was making any sense. ❝ how are you holding up ?? ❞
"i remember him always telling me he'd love to have me around a little longer every time he catches me smokin'. now this damn fool left me, i...why would somebody decide to take him just like that..."
antoinette didn't want to break down like this, not in front of anybody, even maisie. part of her always feels guilty whenever people would be there for her in exchange of nothing, even though it was also something devon had told her not to worry about, that people would help with an open heart, nothing in exchange, she still couldn't help it, it was hard to just deprogram. "i've drowned myself with work, i've taken double shifts, doing on dates with people i've matched with on this app just to distract myself...it's stupid. you think he'd hate that?"
open to: everyone! (capping at 4) @onlymurdersstart location: after the service, devon's funeral
it took a lot in antoinette to even just get up from up her bed, get dressed and be present in devon's funeral. she knew he would want her here, and that she would regret it for the rest of her life if she didn't take the chance to say goodbye. the mask she had been putting on for days ever since he died slipped and she cannot hold her grief to herself and hide it. she had been too shaken up to even just stay in the room. she had found herself heading out for air a couple of times. she had been used to losing people, but the way she had lost somebody she had referred to as her brother...the pain was excruciating.
after the service, she had almost sprinted out of there just to let the tears fall, she didn't want to break down for people to see. the dancer actually prefers to deal with her feelings in her own. the quietness of the spot she's found was just enough to hear somebody walking up to her, hearing the dead leaves crunch beneath their feet. "sorry...i...it's just gettiing fuckin' hard to be there." she says, letting out a shaky breath. "i just can't fuckin' believe all this."
starter - open
maisie hated funerals - although, didn't everyone ?? she wasn't even sure if she belonged here, she was an acquaintance of devon's at best. but still, maisie knew she needed to go and say her final goodbye. it didn't help that she was stuck in the same itchy black dress her mother had picked out for her abuelita's funeral - the one she'd sworn she'd never wear again. funerals were usually a sad occasion, but this felt...heavier. maisie couldn't get her head around any of it.
there was only so much small talk she could take. slipping out before anyone could stop her, maisie made her way outside, drawing in a quiet breath of fresh air - only to pause when she realised she wasn't alone. ❝ hey. do you mind if i stay out here for a little bit ?? i just...needed a moment. ❞ she asked softly, careful not to intrude. her hand dipped into her bag, pulling out a cigarette. ❝ do you mind ?? i've got one with your name on it, if you want to join me. ❞
it took a lot in antoinette to be present for this funeral, she had been crying some nights, rereading the news, going through they old photos together, remembering devon's advises to her whenever she would be struggling with something. she would sometimes forget and hover over his contact to call him about the sadness she'd feel, but then she realizes, devon's gone. he was somebody she leaned on when she left her father's home until she was able to stand on her own two feet. what could be the reason for all this? she was yet to understand, along with the people who continues to question it, if they could ever find out the truth one day.
she almost sprinted out of the room minutes after she came in, not being able to bear the pain of losing somebody she'd always thought of as her brother. once she hears footsteps, she quickly wipes her tears, not wanting anybody to see her breaking. "i may need one, too." she clears her throat. "devon would be lecturing me right now if he finds out i'm smoking again." she stand close to the woman, turning to look at her for a moment. "shit's hard to understand...why would somebody do this to him..."
“oh you’re a life saver.” she told her, figuring the sunglasses made her current state of obvious. arden paused, waiting until she settled into the seat across from her. “please tell me you were out doing something fabulous — it’s the only way this should be allowed.” a soft laugh left her lips, knowing the two of them were probably a sight to any bystanders as she picked off a piece of loose cheese from her sandwich. “should we order more food?”
"well, i worked a bachelorette party the whole night, and trust me when i say...the bride almost called off the wedding because i gave her the best dance of her life apparently..." antoinette says as she playfully flips her hair, then giggles. "i need something greasy in my system, honestly, so i wouldn't say no to that, i need to survive a couple more hours until i get to sleep, and i would be so dead to the world for the rest of the day, i just know it. how about you though, a long, good night?"

"chill, chill, man," alex breathed out, finally dropping forward in the chair, giving some semblance of her attention to the conversation. "i can like, feel the anxiety flowin' off you," she shook her head as she stuck her hands into her hoodie pockets and glanced past toni out to the grounds, wondering if her date was the crazy sort to run in here after her and start a fight. that would be funny.
her eyes narrow a little in consideration of the other's offer. but how could she trust the other would pay up at a later date? if the tables were turned, alex certainly wouldn't - wasn't like you could take away the action of opening a backdoor. she fished in her pockets for the beaten up pack of marlboro lights, flipping the lid open and placing one between her lips. might as well tie in a smoke break to going out the back. "fifty bucks here and now, final offer," alex said as she picked up the 'employee break, back in 10' sign and threw it lightly onto the countertop. "you want out or what?"
"i'm sorry!" antoinette hushes loudly, "i just don't want her to notice i've been gone too long, alright?" and she didn't have much time left ever since she told her date she was going to use the restroom. they were too locked in on finishing their game anyway, as the conversation is just dead on both ends, and that hugely adds to the reason why she just wanted to go. if she had a choice, she wasn't even going to ask for help for alex, but she was the only person who could at this point, and if she needed to swallow her pride, she would.
antoinette scrambles for her wallet, grabbing a couple of tens, not really caring as it looked more than what alex asked for as she handed them to the employee. "hell yeah i want out of this place—i mean, not in that way, this place is cute!" she starts to explain, not wanting for alex to take offense about what she just said. "i just really, really want to leave that situation, and not...do this again, you know?" she scrambles to explain as she follows the other.
The mixed emotion going through Fran right now could be seen clearly on her face as she tried to manage her emotions right now. "You are so fuckin' mean." She muttered but loud enough so that Toni could still hear her. She didn't understand how she could be seen as selfish in this moment? Her thought process was that it wasn't for her, it was for Devon and his family, how could that be selfish? "Why are you being like this?"
"somebody needs to tell you the truth, fran, i'm not being mean." antoinette turned to glare at the blonde, then rolls her eyes before taking a sip of her drink. "devon's family is rich, i don't see the point of having some charity stream. whatever you're gonna fucking earn from that is going to be just a spare change for his family. you know that, right?" she still doesn't know how and why they turned out to be like this, it was all just...one day, the two stopped being friends. "there's literally other fucking ways to honor him, fran. do you even have a manager or whatever to help you think of your content?"
Alex knew most people in town, or at least knew of them. It was one of the benefits and curses of never leaving the town you were born in. She always told herself she'd love to skip town, move somewhere she wasn't known by anyone, but deep down, she knew that was all bullshit. She barely survived with a network; she'd drown on her own. Would never admit that though, hell fucking no. Antoinette was in her outer circle, friends of friends, that type of shit. Not that, by the end of it, Devon and Alex were friends. Her fault, but again, would she ever admit that? Hell fucking no.
She had assumed the connection between her and the other woman she'd come in with not too long ago; it wasn't hard to see the awkward signs of early online dating. Alex didn't know why people bothered with that shit, not even just the dating apps, but dating in general. Seemed like a waste of time. "Yo," she responded, not moving a muscle from her slouched position. "You tried the front door?" Alex glanced past Antionette to the exit door and back. "Although I guess the bell might give you away," she shrugged. "There's a back employee-only door through the office but it's gonna cost ya."
if antoinette had a choice, she isn't really planning to pester alex with a problem as stupid as she's caused herself to be in right now. but she chose to be in this position due to the belief she was going to have some fun for a little bit, distract herself from the weight of devon's death that she has been carrying for a while now. work was certainly a good way to do so, dancing the night away, yet when she's alone in her apartment, she feels like she couldn't stay in it.
"i wouldn't have asked if i didn't give a damn about the door bell..." she lets out an exhausted sigh, running her fingers through her hair. at the mention of the employee-only back door, it got her hopes up, but she's expected that alex isn't going to let her out without anything in change. "now...tell me what i have to do, i'll get you free drinks or a free dance at the club...whatever, alex, i just have to get the hell out of here or that date will make me die of boredom..."

IF THERE'S ANYTHING JUNE will not even hesitate to do -- it's ripping a man a new asshole, especially one with a suffocating ego. fuck with one of her girls on top of that? you were done. she would make sure that you never did so much as breathe the same air as them ever again. of course the air felt heavy amidst those who lived in ellswick -- which frankly felt like the entire world. devon had a way of making you feel special, like he was the sun and the rest of his friends were like the people in his orbit. thus, perhaps june is a bit extra on edge.
of course june remembered the guy. it's like he had practically reeked of entitlement the second he walked in the door. he already reeked of booze, the stench clinging to his clothes as if someone had thrown a drink in his face ( perhaps juniper was jealous she hadn't thought of the idea first ).
" should'a guessed. guy's a prick. " june's eyes narrow -- venom dripping from her words. southern drawl as smooth as honey, but there's some poison behind it. " what we provide is a service, baby. just as we offer it, we can just as quickly refuse. " eyes finally seek him out. " i'm happy t'ruin a fuckin' birthday. " her gaze turns back to her friend for a moment, brows furrowing in a sign of concern. " but you're a'ight? did he hurt ya? "
antoinette knows how protective june can be, how she's willing to go through lengths just to protect her friends, the people close to her, the girls at the club...she could see it in her eyes, how she easily picked up the fact that she was uncomfortable, even masked with her impertinence, both being close with devon, they were always in each other's orbit.
"i've refused more than once, he didn't touch me, but he's really been so annoying, telling me all the things he could give me, as if i asked!" she rolls her eyes, recalling her conversation with the said patron. "then he called me a bitch because i told him to put his money where his mouth is." she looks back, glaring at the man trying to woo the dancer that was on the stage this time. "i don't want to get you in trouble with pablo...we can just call one of the big guys."
"i'm staying here for the rest of the time he's still here, i hope he gets kicked out...can i have my usual though, while we wait" she asks, fluttering her eyelashes at the bartender. she didn't want to dwell on something that could ruin her night. besides the money, all antoinette wants is to have fun at her job. it was one of the most important things for her. "how is...everything with you, by the way?"

distraction was the name of the game, and this morning arden decided the best way to nurse her hangover was with a grilled cheese. she’d even convinced the waiter to add hash browns — everything she needed to help the room stop spinning. her eyes peered up through her sunglasses, spotting a familiar face searching through the room for an empty booth. "hey! if you bring that coffee cup with you, the other side of my table is all yours."
antoinette has had a long night with the bachelorette party she had been working at, and before everybody knew it, the sun was rising and people started going their separate ways. the dancer finds herself stumbling to the corner booth, figuring that breakfast would be a nice way to cap it off. as she enters the place, a voice snaps her out of the tiredness taking over her. "i'll get us that and the whole pot...looks like we both need it."
