there’s a website where you put in two musicians/artists and it makes a playlist that slowly transitions from one musician’s style of music to the other’s
it’s really fun
lady gaga -> napalm death takes a weird detour through epic rap battles of history
This is actually really useful for finding music that’s in between genres that I wouldn’t know to look for.
Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.

Do y'all remember when 8tracks was the height of creativity? People would put hours into perfectly curating playlists with a catchy title and gorgeous cover art. Spotify has absorbed it I guess but I see you old 8Track makers, and I appreciate the work you put in
I’m a wasted playlist, a torn love letter, a broken thing.
ok i have an idea
message me a made up title of a mixtape/playlist and i have to pick 5 to 10 songs i think would go on it
go on
IT’LL BE FUN

ok i think ive come up with a playlist that encompasses all known uniquely human experiences:
“arsonists lullaby” by hozier, “closer” by nine inch nails, “running up that hill (a deal with god)” by kate bush, and “loveshack” by the B-52s.
these experiences are, of course: arson, horny depression, 3 am manic episode trying to bargain with god, and when youve got you a car thats as big as a whale and youre heading on down to the love shack

How did I discover them?
I’ve liked them ever since I was little. I think the first time I heard them was while I was listening to the radio in my room and heard Shake Me Down and just fell in love. I decided to listen to more of their songs later on and immediately put them on my Walkman.
Why should you give them a listen?
I feel like even if you don’t like the genre you can still find a song you’ll love. Each of their albums have a different feel. Their songs are fun to listen to and yet still have a ton of emotion. Some may seem random at first, but after listening for a while you get a sense of the deeper meaning. Honestly you’ve probably already heard their song Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked so I guess I should focus on persuading you all to check out their other songs. Their new album, Tell Me I’m Pretty, is so good. I love each and every one of their new songs. They give off a feeling of softness with a side of “Don’t fucking mess with me”. Honestly CTE is at least one of my top 3 favorites, especially since I’ve loved them for longer than most of my favorites.
not a playlist request, but can you recommend some good unnerving/eerie songs? (pref ones that don't demonize people with mentally illness)

How did I discover them?
This is the story with many of the bands I listen to, and that is that they had a song in a video game. Specifically their song, Circles And Squares, is featured in Saints Row IV, which honestly has such good music choices by the way.
Why should you give them a listen?
Their songs are like when you are standing in the middle of a thunderstorm. You feel part of something greater. There’s a strange nostalgic feeling as well. It might be just me but they make me think of home. I don’t mean home in a comfy, familiar sense though. I am reminded of the feeling of wanting to get out of my house. Those days where it felt like I was all alone. Honestly the reason I relate to their songs so much is probably because they echo those feelings so strongly. I’m not saying these songs make you sad, quite the opposite. It reminds you of those bad feelings, but it also makes you feel like you can do something about it. Their songs gave me a sense of freedom I wasn’t able to feel by myself. Also, their song is a perfect match for running around and gliding in saints row, trust me.
Wearing my band merch in public is my mating call

- All Those Friendly People
How did I start listening to them?
I’ve only known about them for a bit more than a year but they’ve quickly become one of my favorite bands. I was actually looking for a different song and surfing YouTube when I came upon them. The first song I heard was All Those Friendly People. I was drawn in by the strange but beautiful music video, which told part of a story that continues in other videos. It wasn’t extremely confusing, like many music videos are, but was still able to make me wonder what was happening. Their music videos are one of the reasons Lily Of The Valley is my favorite album. But most of all, I fell for the soft, yet powerful sound that they were able to produce in their songs.
Why should you give them a listen?
Their songs are beautiful and seem to blend together and yet still keep their uniqueness. The lyrics are like poetry but not so complicated you have to look up what the lyrics mean on lyrics genius. There is quite a bit of repetitiveness in many of their songs but it’s not excessive. They have been able to create simply powerful emotional music. They have been able to create emotion in their music without breaking the flow of it. Their music videos all tell stories that are fantastical but somehow relatable. The cinematics and music complement eachother instead of clashing and I still enjoy watching them over and over. The effects are beautiful and fantastic without being overdone. Some find the ‘cyborg man’ in We Only Attack Ourselves disconcerting, but I thought it was very well done. I was brought to tears by the end of it and yet I can still watch it over and over. I think everyone can find something to cling to in their music, and it saddens me that this band is so underrated.
