Full Moon wo Sagashite (2002) by Arina Tanemura
I just want to babble about Tamon-kun ima docchi because truly, isn't it one of the most unique, intricate dynamics ever seen in a romance manhwa?
Like first of all don't even get me STARTED on all the inequalities in their relationship. Like, Tamon-kun is a GLOBAL IDOL SENSATION. He has influence over millions of people. Meanwhile, Utage is a normal high school girl with a part time job.
BUT this normal girl is training him like a DOG. He is entirely at the mercy of her whims, relies on her praise to function at work, and is attuned to her signals and cues with automatic responses.
BUT despite the way he is obedient to her the way a dog is obedient to his trainer, SHE is also obsessed with HIM. Could offer him all the time she has, happy to be his servant, to be of use to him in any way, the slightest use of his "Tamon-kun" persona has his head exploding.
BUT he is also someone who faces incredible social limitations which she is currently bringing him out of.
It's just. Usually there is no way to make the Idol/Fan relationship equal. It will always be unbalanced in some way. But here, we have Tamon begging to be Utage's FRIEND. Begging for her attention. And it makes sense! It's believable because of his personality. Their whole growth arc is about Utage slowly seeing him as a man more than a god, and Tamon worshipping her as a Goddess.
I saw that you've just finished it and are equally obsessed with their relationship, so I thought I'd give it a shout. Please let me know your thoughts!
Hey, thanks for your message! I love babbling about my obsessions, too!!
The thing is, before I started this anime, I never would have thought that I could ever love an Idol/Fan relationship this much. Not because of the inequalities - I usually don't mind those in my ships - but because the concept just doesn't really appeal to me. A popular, famous, rich guy falling in love with a normal girl is a common female fantasy (not that there's anything wrong with it! Whatever floats your boat!), but for me personally it's always been a bit unrealistic and stale. Why her specifically? There are so many stories of hyper-desirable men falling over each other for a cardboard cutout of a girl (or the other way around, if it's a ShΕnen anime).
What makes Tamon-kun Ima Docchi so unique is how tightly the protagonists are written to fit each other perfectly. At first you think that it's just a cutesy gap moe twist to the common story. Then you think that she's only into him because of his looks and he's only into her because he doesn't have anyone else. But the more time passes, the more it becomes clear that they are exactly what the other needs, exactly each other's missing puzzle piece.
Tamon needs someone who boosts his confidence in a tangible way, who knows all of his sides and still accepts all of him, who supports him unconditionally, who helps him to get over his anxieties and to connect with others slowly and steadily. Who sees and likes the human man he really is without wanting anything in return, and Utage does just that.
As for Utage... I haven't read the manga yet, but in the anime it's been implied that she doesn't have all that much self confidence either. She calls herself disgusting otaku twice, she always puts other people's needs first, she talks about connecting her future and her happiness with the future and success of F/ACE, wanting nothing from life but to help them become even more successful. It feels like she has built a steadfast protective wall around her true thoughts and feelings, terrified of getting hurt or hurting others (which is why her childhood friend called her "boring" for not talking a lot). I also think this is part of why she likes fandom so much: because there she can safely disappear among the masses of fans, giving her all for a common goal and never be seen as a real person of her own.
It's only Tamon, despite and because of his specific brand of insanity, who slowly breaks down her walls. He sees her, the real her, worries about her, tries to get to truly know her, wants to be there for her in any way he possibly can, makes her think about herself, makes her reveal things about herself she usually wouldn't. She's special to him, and he is on his way to make her feel like she, Utage Kinoshita, actually matters. And that's exactly what she needs.
In a worse written story, the role reversal of "The fan starts to see the idol as a human being, while the idol starts to see the fan as a goddess" could quickly become trite and silly. But here, it matches perfectly to both of their personalities. It's a stepping stone to truly see each other as equals and become perfect for each other.
And underneath all of that, they really are just two young people who fit together. Both have self-worth issues, both work hard, both are strong-willed when they have to be, both have trouble handling their feelings in a healthy way, both want to help people and make the world a better place.
Utage and Tamon are obsessed with each other. They match each other's freak. They have an unhinged dynamic right now. But they also see each other completely and accept each other the way they are. They genuinely enjoy spending time together. They help each other grow - sometimes gently, sometimes forcefully. They give each other what they need. All of these things are true at the same time. And that's the beauty of it.
Sorry for this wall of text! Once I started, I couldn't seem to stop, haha.
Utage is a wonderful main character straight out of a self-insert fic because she's self-aware.
She's completely devoted to Tamon as a fan and as someone truly close to him, but she's also aware that she has to separate these two worlds. She knows that her love for Tamon as an idol is different from romantic love. It's a very mature approach.
This also sets her apart from other protagonists in similar stories.
She's not the typical "other" girl who doesn't even know such a band exists. She's not a hater, either. She's not a psycho fan who lives in delusion. She's an intense fan, yes, but she knows the boundaries she tries not to cross.
She's the perfect protagonist for this story.
Big fan of Utage supporting Tamon into submissionβ¨

what kills me about tamon/utage is that yes tamon's overstepping (so is utage LOL)(utage just freaks out and has a mental breakdown whenever she thinks she's overstepping) but a main reason utage isn't receptive to it is her own self-perception that it isn't good for him and that it's not her place to be so close to him. utage is generally hyperaware of the surface-level and wide-scale social dynamics at play, and extremely conscious of (attempting) to remain within the (perceived) appropriate ones. meanwhile tamon has in a way a more accurate read of their dynamic on an actual personal level, and does not care for the outsider perspective that utage always filters everything through - she perceives HERSELF as an outsider perspective, despite this not actually being true. conversely, tamon conceptualizes her as someone that's been "let in" - combined with his apathy, or rather... kind of ill-socialization toward how interpersonal relationships are appropriately handled, he's iffy on who he is, who he should be, what and which boundaries need to be upheld - in a sense, his self image is so low that he views himself and his portrayal as a malleable object to be utilized as seen fit. even when that utilization is one that deliberately undercuts boundaries that would otherwise stand - "I knew you would be okay with it because you think I'm hot." and once again his reading here isn't wrong - utage IS okay with it she just doesn't perceive their relationship in a way that allows it to settle normally. and yes he has always been like that. good luck, utage! good luck, tamon!
"Is somebody gonna match my freak" but it's just Tamon "I'll sell my organs if you can just text me every once in a while" Fukuhara and Utage "Tamon-kun's organs belong in his godly body and are also priceless and can thus never be sold at market rate" Kinoshita
I've never believed in "You don't choose the ship, the ship chooses you" until Kingdon came my way

yall gotta learn the difference between "this character is an asshole" and "this character was supposed to be super cool but the author is an asshole" and "this character is a teenage girl who was mean once"
How funny would it be if it turns out Samira in s3 was just. upstairs in geriatrics.
Santos tells people wondering where Dr. Mohan went that she 'tragically left us' then she gets a call 30 minutes later and it's Samira yelling 'QUIT TELLING EVERYONE I DIED.'
the break room scene did such a good job at showing langdon and mel's different personalities while also showing why they work together so well. like of course he talks about nietzsche when she was actually quoting kelly clarkson, that's just so them
I was really scared. Thank you.
Love how Mel can just sense something is off with Langdon itβs not just one sided but they both can sense it in each other and I think thatβs beautiful.
