hi um. this is a complete shot in the dark and I'm sorry if I'm bothering you, but I've been seeing a lot of your vegan posts lately, and I'm wondering if you have any advice for cutting meat in a carnivore household, preferably cheaply? I don't want to bore you with a crazy long story, but this heatwave (I'm in the UK) has forced me to think about the choices I'm making. I'd appreciate anything you have to say, and if not, thank you for your time o7
I'm glad to help! I went vegetarian 17 years ago and vegan in 2019 I think? Somewhere around that time. So when I first stopped eating meat, I was 13 and still living with my parents.
Advice if you are able to cook for yourself: google whichever dish you'd usually make but + vegan/vegetarian recipe. Then pick the first one that works for you (can be made with ingredients you can either buy at the regular grocery store or already have at home).
If/when you can't cook for yourself: if eating out, try a place that has veggie options. Try out some veggie ready-meals or pre-prepared foods like nuggets, burger patties, pasta sauces, minced "meats", bread spreads, deli "meats"...
Don't just cut out foods, explore and introduce new options. Most people find that a gradual transition works best for them and makes it easier to stick to the lifestyle.
When it comes to plant-based foods, there can be lots of different options available. So if you don't like one brand, just try a different one next time. You'll eventually figure out what you like & don't like.
Also, be open-minded & have fun trying out new foods. Especially at the beginning, you'll probably tend to compare everything to the taste of animal products and often times, that won't be the case. Instead, just ask yourself if you like the taste and would eat it again. Beans don't have to taste like meat to be tasty. You can, however, often do quite a lot by just using the same spices.
You can even just reduce the meat & add more plants to your plate. An overall reduction in your meat consumption is also an improvement. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, especially at the very beginning or if you don't have complete control over what you eat.
Also, chances are you are eating too much protein, getting enough of it isn't nearly as much of an issue as people believe. You might, however, want to avoid increasing your fiber intake too much too quickly. Your gut bacteria will have to get used to it.
