A Spring Affair
once i was on a lichen field trip and we drove past a cemetery and my lichen professor was like “graveyards!!!!! great for lichens!!!!!” and i thought he was joking until i found this 2 minutes ago and realized he was serious
Euphorbia obesa, 2 years + 5 months
The obesa seedlings have grown really big over summer and they haven’t stretched at all. They really look like miniature beach balls now. Or regular sized sea urchin shells, whichever one you prefer. Wait, aren’t they called baseball plants?
Lots of color still in the garden. My zinnias were amazing this year and I’ll probably try to save seeds from them and possibly get more, maybe the orange and green variety.
My mom’s orange Dahlias formed a hedge in front of the Callicarpa and the contrast with the purple and orange is really striking in person. Next year, she’s expanding the edge of the bed so they fit better. Dahlias are annuals but grow from tubers that can be lifted and stored over winter and replanted.

Butterwort - A Carnivorous Plant with Interesting Uses
Butterwort is an insectivorous/carnivorous plant that belongs to the bladderwort family (Lentibulariaceae.)
The English common name butterwort probably comes from the plant’s ability to curdle milk, but it might also be because of its mucilage covered leaves.
Butterwort was once widely used in folk medicine, but much of the knowledge regarding herb’s uses as an herbal medicine has probably been forgotten.
Still, it is known that the leaves, used externally as a poultice, were applied to wounds to speed up the healing process and to get rid of warts.
Furthermore, the herb was used as a remedy for skin rashes, eczema, and ringworm.

I planted some saguaro seeds about a week ago. Who woukda thunk that such large lads start out so smol. (submitted @nolayelde)
this speaks for itself when paired with a pic of the grown plant for scale:
they usually live to be 150+ years old. cutting one down in Arizona, where they’re native, is a felony with a maximum 9 months in prison.
in my brief wikipedia exploration to find out how old they could be for this ask i found out that there was a dude in 1982 who was vandalizing one (which is also highly illegal) by shooting at it and then poking at it, and not only did the 500 pound arm of the cactus he was shooting at fall on top of him, but the actual trunk of the cactus then also proceeded to fall on him. he died. smited by the cactus gods for his transgressions
There was one we had in our backyard that fell on our fence and buckled the steel bar. When the guy came by to take it away he sliced into roughly foot long segments and we kept one. It was really cool in the inside, also the chlorophyll is on the inside. My mom turned the outer layer into a lampshade
Sorry it’s dusty lmao no idea how to clean it
i…………..idk how to react to this but this is definitely an item i wasn’t expecting
here’s another fun fact about saguaro cactuses (or cacti - both are fine!): when they die, the flesh on them erodes away and leaves these really cool wood-like structures
they’re called bones. these are cactus bones
……oh
Some succulents have translucent leaves to allow sunlight to penetrate deep inside their tissues. The glass-like Haworthia cooperi ‘Dodson’ has taken this phenomenon to the extreme.

Second harvest of wild tomatoes from that volunteer plant. It grew so much, I took a picture of it 2 or 3 weeks ago and back then it only reached that brown post in the middle, now is way past it and almost reaching the garage gate. While the main crop of tomatoes in the garden is mostly wilted and ready to be pulled out, this one is as green as ever and still full of flowers.
