it is a little known fact that niki lauda’s favorite film was goncharov (1973). mauro forghieri describes it in his account of ferrari that niki was, quote, “insufferable” about it. apparently he had it screened for the whole ferrari team. mauro said that sometimes niki would make clock sounds while they worked on the car, just to get the sense of urgency and mortality across. enzo, it is said, was not very fond of when niki brought up the themes of decaying empires and often got into heated debates with the fiery austrian driver over the film.
