The sculpture I made for the workshop has an empty looking head, which also looks like a giant eye. This made me think about how everything we ‘like’ on social media is being watched, and our timelines are covered with advertisement for things that we might like and would buy, therefore fuelling our materials souls. This link into the use of cardboard as it is material used for packaging, and the boxes our online shopping comes in. Also, the use of surveillance on social media links into the giant eye looking head of my sculpture, which sort of has a surveillance camera shape to it. My idea for this project was to make loads of these character sculptures, which would all look the same, reflecting the internet and how its algorithms only see people as a mere number in its calculations. All the sculptures would also be made by hand, which would have been a long, boring process, to contrast the fast paced internet and manufacturing world.

I started making another sculpture in exactly the same way but I decided to cut out the heart of the sculpture, stick colourful marbled paper to it and hang it above its head. I also made a cardboard phone with a screen that has ‘buy me’ written on it and stuck it through the characters hands using a cardboard knife. This was to show that we have become soulless consumers and addicts to the internet.

I decided to scrap this idea of making cardboard sculpture because to be honest I was bored of it. But I had another idea.

This idea was to make pointless sculptures out of found material, make professional looking advertisements for them an actually try to sell them to people to see if they would buy my pointless sculptures. This idea came from the people always buying things that are so pointless and unnecessary, and I wanted to test out this theory.

This piece of work was made during a green screen workshop with Rebecca Lennon. I used a circuit board (on green screen), which looked like buildings from the side, and used this as a boarder for the video, to represent both cities and technology. The background video is of a CD and a lightbulb. I also added the text, ‘not all worlds belong to me.’ I changed the word ‘word’ to ‘world’ from the sketchbook piece. I was thinking about how when people post things onto social media, they sort of don't belong to you, they are just floating around in cyber internet space, where ever that is, and its all out for people to see. Also, I find it quite strange, how things on the internet are not physical objects, so they can’t really belong to anyone, because they are just made up of pixels and other internet stuff, so not all worlds (being the internet world) belong to anyone.

It all started off with women never getting the respect they should have within society, but I won’t talk about that just yet. I did a presentation for unit one titled ‘flowers of flesh and blood, I salute you and your patience in this phallic world.’ And yes, it is about feminism. Anyway, from this title I was thinking about protests and the use of loud banners and large block letters for slogans. I didn't want to make a traditional protest banner with my quote, so instead I became interested in quiet protests. Instead of making a banner that was really quick, I want to make something that took time, and wasn't as loud looking, but still got the message out there. I want to make an embroidered protest banner, (something that is traditionally associated with women’s work,) but honestly, I just really like embroidery. So I embroidered the word cunt onto white fabric just to see what it would look like. I just really like the word cunt okay, it’s not just a feminist thing. This is just an experimental piece, for me to practice sewing neatly. I like the passive aggressiveness of the piece as a whole, because of how cute it looks, but its still a harsh word.
