āWomen are taught to see their bodies in parts, and to evaluate each part separately. Breasts, feet, hips, waistline, neck, eyes, nose, complexion, hair, and so onāeach in turn is submitted to an anxious, fretful, often despairing scrutiny. Even if some pass muster, some will always be found wanting. Nothing less than perfection will do.ā

Sandor: āYouāve changed Little Bird. ⦠None of it would have happened if you have left Kingās LandingĀ with me. No Littlefinger, no Ramsay, none of it.ā Sansa: āWithout Littlefinger, Ramsay, or the rest, I would have stayed a Little Bird all my life.ā
Things I Think The Writers Meant: Sansa saw how cruel and ruthless the world is first hand ā she adapted, she survived, she adjusted her world-view; she became better than those men, outlived them, and caused their death directly or indirectly. Sansaās no bird, sheās a wolf.
Things The Writers Ended Up Saying Too: Women need to undergo trauma to grow. They need to beĀ psychologically, physically, and sexually abused in order to become Strong Charactersā¢. Cause clearly a safe environment would not have yielded a smart, strong, mature woman. It is known.

chipped nail polish and coffee stained thoughts
I think about this often.
For twenty years, my depression and anxiety didnāt critically impede my ability to function. It made my life hell, but I went to class and got good grades and had friends. Sure, I had very odd coping mechanisms - like occasionally sleeping outside instead of going back to my dorm room, because I dreaded being in there; or like crying explosively over nothing; or picking fights with my partner about how they should dump me, because I was worthless and probably not going to live very long anyway. Everyone told me I was fine - maybe a bit dramatic, and a bit negative, but fine.
I think a lot about the tipping point. I graduated. I got married. I moved out. And then, the panic attacks came in earnest. The impulse to hurt myself or force other people to hurt me became louder. Because I had no outlet - no high-intensity job, no school structure to force me to get up, nobody to impress or please. It was just me. And I hated me. So, why would I be able to motivate myself to do anything at all? My whole life, Iād been performing at maximum intensity to please others. And I was tired.
It took years of floating in that state - nobody forcing me to get a job or get out of bed - before I realized that Iād arrived. Iād hit the āyou canāt function anymoreā level that all the therapists finally seem to take seriously.
So, I went into my doctor and said, āI canāt live my life anymore. I need help.ā
And she said, āBut youāre so well-spoken and self-aware!ā I could tell that I was fooling her again, by dressing normally and showering that morning and showing up with all my paperwork in order.
We have to stop pushing people past the point where their illness āimpedes their ability to function.ā Because we canāt always see it clearly. Iām far past my ability to live a complete and happy life, but I donāt look like it all the time. That doesnāt mean I donāt deserve help. Everyone deserves help. No matter where theyāre at - bottom or middle or top of their mental health experience. We canāt dictate that to people; itās harmful.

One of the reasons men didnāt have an issue with Wonder Woman is because they can objectify her. Sheās basically in a metal swimsuit. Now, I think they did a really good job with her costume considering what they had to work with. It looked like real armor and something that an Amazon woman would wear, way better than past iterations where she was literally in lingerie. Captain Marvel, on the other hand, is in a full suit that covers her entire body. It fits her well, but itās not a skintight bodysuit like what Black Widow has worn before. Ā Itās practical and isnāt something that men can easily objectify. They didnāt have problems with some of the feminist stuff in Wonder Woman because they were too busy staring up her skirt. Men donāt have an issue with a woman on screen if itās someone they can objectify.
I was looking everywhere for this post!
There were some things I wanted to add to further hammer this point.
Another reason men preferred Wonder Woman is because of her supposed ānaivety.ā Sheās really intelligent, but when it came to actual interaction with men and life outside Themyscira, Diana was totally new to that and men think sheād be easy to manipulate. Even though theyād be completely wrong, thatās what they think. We see this kind of thing in the real world where American men try to manipulate women of color or women from foreign countries all the time.
Captain Marvel had an American accent and was far more advanced than they were, so sheās mentally intimidating, because they know how fast sheād pick up on their BS.
Diana also has more traditional feminine qualities, such as her delicate nature and way of speaking. The biggest reason was her love interest and the fact that the group she fought along side with were all men. In Wonder Woman, she did knock some insulting men on their asses, but right after, a man says that heās both afraid and aroused. When Captain Marvel does the same thing, itās more of a, ālol bitch bye!š¤£ā And men canāt find a reason why that would be sexually enjoyable.
Wonder Woman was actually a really awesome feminist symbol and in no way was she even sexualized, but men will still find a way. Which really sucks, because the two movies show that strong women come in many different forms and they donāt have to be anything alike, but the woman that appears more approachable will be sexualized while the other woman will be labeled as a man hater.
This reblog is fantastic, I never thought about Diana being more approachable, but it makes total sense! A lot of people think Iām hating on Wonder Woman, but Iām just pointing out how men are seeing her, and this post helps explain it even more. Her outfit wasnāt made to specifically objectify her, but it is easier for men to objectify. Wonder Woman is an amazing movie and is pretty feminist, but the stuff thatās been mentioned is why men had less of an issue with it. Wonder Woman still did get shit, but Iāve seen so many men try to defend their sexist behavior towards Captain Marvel by saying that they love Wonder Woman. Iām just pointing out in my original post one of the reasons why so many men are saying they arenāt being sexist because they love Wonder Woman but not Captain Marvel.
also, wonder woman showed attraction towards a man, which would make the male viewer feel like she could be attracted to them. captain marvel was like a big ol lesbian who didnāt show any attraction towards the men around her, and went as far as to have a really really really gay close relationships with another woman. men donāt tend to like women who are not attracted to them. they donāt like women who would rather be with other women, and not let them watch. if a woman doesnāt exist for a man then whatās her point?
This is what I have been trying to explain for quite some time now. I love Wonder Woman, no doubt there but the fact that she actually needed a manās help to navigate through the new world set her up as a vulnerable female figure which is how men are used to seeing woman for a long time. And her love interest on screen being a man kind of made them feel in charge of the situation. Whereas Captain Marvel represents a figure of strong independent woman who herself is in charge of what she is doing. We donāt see Captain Marvel following anyoneās command and later she cuts off her hair for her own amusement. The fact that her actions were not influenced by any external male figure at any point of time makes men feel powerless as they are not playing a major role in her life.
Back in February I noticed alt-right and anti-sjw vloggers on YouTube were whipping themselves into a FRENZY over Captain Marvel vs Battle Angle Alita. The general consensus was that Battle Angle Alita should be the film everyone loves, because Alita is much ābetterā female representation than Captain Marvel was (despite them obviously not even seeing Captain Marvel yet). And I started to wonder⦠Why?Ā
Yes, Alita is a good character⦠but why pit her specifically against Captain Marvel? Theyāre not even in the same genre of film. Why was Alita beating Captain Marvel at the box office SOOOOOO important to them?
And then I remembered this post. And yeah, thatās pretty much the reason. While Alita does have a heroic journey and learns to use her powers to defeat evilā¦Ā Alita is ALSO a big doe-eyed, amnesiac, anime looking character who is literally objectified by characters around her in her own film.
It really does just boil down to looks for them. Alita can be objectified (hell, in the film people try to mold her into their own personal idealized version of herself), but Captain Marvel canāt.

āAttention: deep listening. People are dying in spirit for lack of it. In academic culture, most listening is critical listening. We tend to pay attention only long enough to develop a counterargument; we critique the studentās or the colleagueās ideas; we mentally grade and pigeonhole each other. In society at large, people often listen with an agenda, to sell or petition or seduce. Seldom is there a deep, open-hearted nonjudgmental reception of the other. And so we all talk louder and more stridently and with a terrible desperation. By contrast, if someone truly listens to me, my spirit begins to expand.ā
