And to think I used to consider this episode boring... What little I knew about everything! And I say it because so many things happened in less than 30 minutes:
Elisa trying to listen to the attraction she clearly feels for Jason, and no one can blame her, she is not in a relationship with Goliath, and she is not willing to acknowledge it either and that is stated at the moment because let's remember that they practically just came back from Avalon's Journey (when Goliath tried to face it and she decided to turned the blind eye on the whole issue). She even let herself go in the kiss, only to come back to her senses seconds later... But the damage is done, Goliath witnessed almost everything, he listened to her explanation and it seems that he is deflected, he quietly leaves, and misses the part in which Jason leaves the apartment too...
Later we see that Goliath is not deflected but incredibly upset, and that mixed with his desires of revenge due to Angela almost being killed, can only lead to disaster, and what I think is interesting here is that in the meantime between leaving Elisa's apartment and finding the Hunters aircraft, he had time to think and let's look to the evidence here:
-They were kissing.
-Elisa said that their relationship would be impossible.
-Elisa spoke to someone else about a situation that ONLY was his and her business, so this had to be the first time he listened to what she really felt about them together and he wasn't even in the conversation, that had to 🤕 hurt like fucking hell.
-And worst, he left the two alone in her apartment in which she lives alone and she is an adult, she has desires and needs obviously, nothing would prevent for them to sleep together, I think that is why he is enraged later! in his mind Elisa was in Jason's arms in a way that she would never be with him...He would never be able to touch her like he was doing in that moment, in Goliath's mind (Because Jason left, and we know it, he didn't).
The fact that Brooklyn points out that his plan is reckless, only confirms that they wanted for us to clearly understand that his actions were affected by the thought of Elisa with someone else.
And again, all in less than 30 minutes...
Now, how horrible must it have been to have to seek shelter with Elisa of all people after the Clock tower explode? If it all happened on the same night... how long must it have taken Goliath to decide to go with her, knowing he was definitely going to run into Jason right there in her apartment?
Listening to the new episode of @gargoylespodcast I discovered that I was in part right about my new impression from this episode, because I've been a fan since the 90's and a lot of the meanings, plots and dramas were invisible to me because I was a child.
I was correct about Goliat, Elisa and Jason's drama, so if you are a Golisa fan, you'll love this episode, and if you are a fan from the series, Demona, Brooklyn, voice acting, definitely you won't be disappointed, but I warned you, this show is addictive! Even if English is your second or third language like it is for me, you'll find this is a super helpful practice.

How can he managed to convey so we'll everything in just one phrase!? I can't stop laughing because this was so unexpected.
.....And there was no dinner literally and figuratively.
In the scene Jason leaves Elisa in her apartment truly hurt, Elisa is super sad sitting in the floor, even when she has her table, the sofa, all these chairs, but she is so helpless that she just collapse there.
Goliath was the first to go, with his heart stabbed and all this rage that is not letting him breathe.
No one got comfort, and that's so... I want to say unfair, because the 3 we know that have suffered a lot, but most of it heartbreaking.
What a wonderful show, created in the 90's and still better written and built that many current shows.
And I have to say it was about time to bring it back to live!

You know, it does get a bit tiresome how consistently we have our gargoyles so obviously rescue people and they stick to this assumption that they're monsters out to hurt them, but at the same time, the very situation of needing to be rescued lends itself to being in a state of shock and deregulation where the brain is literally not working quite right. By the time anyone can sort themselves out and go over what happened, the gargoyles aren't around to see it, so their frustration is pretty valid. And I love that we distinctly get Brooklyn here reacting to it with sarcasm, because I do still think he has the closest parallel personality-wise to Demona. Which I adore! Especially knowing that later this doesn't make him unfit to be a leader because it's not the disposition that's the problem, but what one does with it!
This woman! Argh I dislike her so much after the trial from Issue 9 and 10! I mean she was saved by them so many times, yes ok, there were some inconvenient situations like when her car was almost destroyed on Halloween when the gargoyles were chasing Fox in her unhinged form, but after that she always had the better outcome.
Also due to her job is to face the worst from the worst from society, I understand she just can't trust easily; but she could be able to sense if someone is trying to kill you or help you, she would just have to look at the facts
Who were the gargoyles attacking?
What triggered the gargoyles action?
What was the final outcome?
God, she doesn't have a justification for being so nasty...

After a long hiatus the spell is broken, we live again we're back to finish up the mainline SLG comics. Whoo!
For context, I’ve never read these comics before! I’m very excited to finally experience the canonical Season 3. Previous posts can be found under this tag.

Honestly, this is probably my favorite mini-saga/set of issues in this book. Pretty much everything is firing on all cylinders. Greg Guler doing the art for a whole issue is a nice treat. I LOVE the historical flashbacks in Gargoyles all the time always, and having “modern-day” Brooklyn along for the ride is fun. Man, it turns out I do want a TimeDancer spinoff after years and years of being pretty “meh” on the idea. At this point, I’m sold (anything for MORE KATANA! But I’m getting ahead of myself, eheheh).
Finally, Brooklyn gets to escape from the constant presence of the lovebirds. He really needs to be careful what he wishes for XD And of all the places and times to end up, it’s…. dun da da DAH! Scotland, 997 AD. Why, nothing at all significant could be happening back then :)
Except… MARY AND FINELLA ARE BACK, BABY!!! LET’S GOOOOOO! They’re still being hunted by High King Constantine because he’s still a gigantic prick (no surprise there). And he’s acquired some terrible new cronies: an eager-to-prove-himself teenage Gillecomgain, Gillecomgain’s dad Mail Brigti (with a real chip on his shoulder), and the sorcerer Brother Valmont. Soooooo… between this guy, the sorcerer Valois, and Father Vasquez, we have three bald guys, seemingly with an interest in powerful magical artifacts, in Scotland between 971 and 997, whose names all start with “V”. Significant? I’m choosing to believe so. In what way? Remains to be seen…
The Phoenix really dumped Brooklyn in the worst possible place, though. ARROW’D! That’s flippin' brutal.
Finella leaning into the idea of the general populace now thinking she’s a witch is interesting, and I kind of love it for her. She REALLY wants to use magic, and maybe (maybe??) she starts to get kind of close near the end of these issues (“seeing the shape of the spell”... OOOH! Good for her!). But I wonder what it could mean. Hopefully something intriguing down the line :D Brooklyn’s quick-thinking enough to swoop in to rescue the ladies, despite being twice-injured (and personally, I don’t think he needs to be worried about being singlehandedly responsible for ruining human-gargoyle relations in this time period, they’re pretty fraught as they are—but IS intriguing that he’s worried about it/blaming himself. Obvious character growth since "Awakening"... but once again, I must ask: HOW CONSTANTLY STRESSED IS TIMEDANCING BROOKLYN???). Regardless, all three fugitives high-tail it away from the pitchfork-wielding locals, and Mary and Finella continue to watch Brooklyn throughout the day while he’s sleeping in their cart.
(More thoughts about Finella: This is presumably the first time she’s seen a real live gargoyle before! She’s pretty chill about it too, honestly. I’m REALLY interested in the fact that she may have had a son as well. That’s some more historic/folkloric truth seeping into Gargoyles lore that wasn’t present in "Avalon, part 1"… curious what, if anything, old King Kenneth had to do with him in the Gargoyles version of events…)
But what’s got Constantine so gung-ho about continuing his genocidal campaign against gargoyles? Why, it’s threats to his power, of course (also: he’s a gigantic prick). Those threats come in the form of (the late) King Kenneth’s adult son Maol Chalvim, and (the late) King Duff’s son, also named Kenneth and known (rather ironically) as The Grim. Maol Chalvim’s father allied with gargoyles to defeat Constantine’s father (See Dark Ages issues 1-3), so Constantine is making sure these two cousins can’t do the same to him. The pair ARE allied with Findlaech of Moray, though—Findlaech, before he was a dad! We would be getting SO MUCH John Rhys-Davies voice acting if Season 3 was animated. Alas!!!! T^T
Sidenote (positive): The panel borders and comic pages becoming white during the daytime scenes in these issues, when the rest of the pages are black because they take place at night, is a great touch. Another instance of these comics firing on all cylinders.
Sidenote (negative): Unfortunately, I get a LOT of the human characters mixed up in these issues. This isn’t the fault of the art or the story per se (though... it's definitely not helped by the art style changing every issue), it’s just that I can only keep so many white men with similar facial features and beards straight in my head ^^; Having to go back to GargWiki a LOT to reference the family tree of Scottish royalty just to understand their relationship to each other as well. I’m grateful to everyone who put in the work, here!! Rereading Dark Ages helped as well. I think I finally have it straight XD
Anyway… we get to see Constantine’s cruelty first-hand (because he’s a GIGANTIC PRICK!) and Brooklyn comes to the conclusion that he needs the Phoenix Gate from THIS century in order to get back home to HIS century. Both of these things lead to a very striking final page with… DEMONA! End of issue :O
Issue 11 involves a lot of pieces moving around and preparing for the battle between the forces of Constantine and The Grim. Constantine shaves his head (becoming Constantine The Bald) and takes a great interest in Gillecomgain (and his scars). Brooklyn gets MORE trauma by visiting Castle Wyvern and seeing the results of the massacre again, realizing he can’t access Goliath’s half of the Phoenix Gate without putting Goliath at risk. MARY LEARNS THAT TOM GETS KINDA-MARRIED, ahaha (sad that she was apparently ALSO in 1995 Manhattan when Tom was and neither of them knew, but… maybe there’s hope of them meeting again later?) And then… LUNFANEN CLAN LET’S GOOOOOO!
This is just going to be me commenting on the stuff I got wrong in my own fanfic because I couldn’t wait to finish it before reading these comics. FIRST OFF, the clan (or cell) is really small T^T Second of all, the actual number of gargs in the Sruighlea cell is given (WHY) :/ Third: wow, those two panels really ARE my beautiful daughter True’s only appearances. Boo. BOO!! I stand by all my decisions to write a fanfic about her based on her one (1) line of dialogue, I just… need to adjust some things to be a touch more canon-compliant (not surprising. But BOO!)
^ MOST IMPORTANT PAGE EVER AUUUUUUGH ^
Tl;dr though, Demona wants to kill people. She wants to kill people on ALL SIDES of this conflict. Already displaying that black-and-white thinking, only three years after the massacre. That feels a *tiny bit* early based on future events showing her complete hatred of humanity being a *touch* more gradual… but she’s nothing if not opportunistic, so it doesn’t feel out of character in the slightest.
Finella and Mary bring Brooklyn to the Grim’s camp. Finella is a well-spoken and persuasive lady who knows how to handle herself <3 Brooklyn realizes that if he wants to keep the Grimorum Archanorum safe, The Grim is going to have to win this battle, and in order for that to happen, he needs to find Demona, and get these humans in an alliance with the remaining gargoyles of Scotland (I appreciate his fourth-wall-breaking educational PSA to The Kids, and surprisingly it gives some weight to his insistence that Gnash actually “hit the books” later on).
MORE BROOKLYN TRAUMA as he discovers more shattered gargoyle clans and at last comes face to face with Demona one night. He manages to (eventually) keep his cool about it though, in the name of doing what he must (AND he manages to trigger Demona’s guilt about her role in the massacre, which she totally deserves, and tries to lie her way out of). It’s interesting that Demona now thinks Brooklyn survived the massacre because he was in the rookery. She has such a good memory though, I wonder how long it takes her to realize his story doesn't check out. Regardless, his manipulation of her during these issues really adds a whole ‘nother level (SPITE!!) to her singling him out in “Temptation”. They really are more alike than different. So that’s fun!
The full-page panel showing the front AND back of Constantine’s head, plus Gillecomgain’s “Oh yes, your Majesty!” is so good and creepy. A+.
And then… it’s battle time! Really epic panels and coloring on the last few pages of issue 11. The two-pager of the gargoyles entering the fight is also REALLY choice. I haven’t talked about itty-bitty Bodhe yet, but… poor kid! LOL. Definitely in over his head.
All this gives way to a menacing cliffhanger courtesy of both Demona and Brother Valmont, with the future of Scotland hanging in the balance as we enter issue 12!
(Speaking of which, the cover of 12 is SO funny. I’m surprised Disney was OK with it back in the day. Also, the art in the issue itself can be so VERY anime. Ben Dunn is the artist here ^_^)
Finella the w... waifu...
But the battle! The battle is pretty intense. Brooklyn’s moment with his rookery brother is cute. Demona’s not interested in cute, though, she’s more interested in bashing skulls in with a mace and insisting to Brooklyn that Goliath was always way too trusting of humanity.
In terms of human match-ups, it’s Constantine vs. The Grim, Gillecomgain vs. Bodhe, and Mail Brigti vs. Findlaech. And then… Brother Valmont uses the Grimorum, upgrading his single-use fire arrows to a fiery rain (reign?) of death. Both Maol Chalvim and Finella recognize the Latin, and Finella and Mary duck under their cart just in time. A handful of gargoyles are not so lucky, though… including the other blorbo-from-my-comics, Sacrifice (her characterization really is virtually non-existent here, so I’m grateful for Dark Ages actually fleshing her out!!). Second is heartbroken, Demona and Brooklyn are horrified. Brooklyn takes Valmont’s hand off with his sword(!!), and though Finella reaches for the Grimorum, it’s Demona who gets it, and ends the spell.
BLORBO FROM MY COMICS NOOOOOOO! John Rhys-Davies characters stop being sad over the loves-of-their-life challenge (impossible) (failed)
But NOT before Mail Brigti snuffs it, which Gillecomgain sees as Findlaech having dealt a killing blow to his father, rather than the now-vanished magic arrows. Which gives some really fun background to Findlaech’s assassination in 23 years :3 Ah, the endless cycle of vengeance in Gargoyles… good, good stuff.

The Grim triumphs over Constantine, finally living up to his name (while Gillecomgain, again, looks on in horror). Then the Phoenix appears, much to Brooklyn’s apparent frustration at not being able to find out how this conflict ends (oh Brooklyn… you’re so innocent. Don’t you know that it’s “never the end?” Also, not how history works ;)) Brooklyn manages to talk the Grimorum out of Demona’s hands by distracting her, saying she can control the Phoenix with her half of the Gate, and Mary and Finella manage to talk their way into accompanying Brooklyn out of this time period. And so…
The story ends a mere forty seconds after it began, with Brooklyn 40 years older, Hudson, Lexington, and the Coldduo rejoining the clan, not to mention KATANA(!!!!!), Gnash, Fu-Dog, and Egwardo (I’m… finally going to start spelling that correctly, ahaha). This clan is fuckin’ BUILT, and that’s the end of the mainline SLG run!
So… yeah! This trio of issues were REALLY solid, definitely my favorite in the book. I honestly don’t feel like I have that much more to say about them, except they’re the ones that have the most “dwell time” in my brain. There are so many little gaps to fill in, but in a good way c: And if I were to rank the issues in this book overall, it would probably be in reverse “episode” order. “The Journey” issues have some of my least favorite art and coloring, but they DO have Macbeth in them, so maybe they get bumped a little higher than Halloween? I REALLY liked the art in Issues 4 and 5, though, so… I dunno. Maybe it’s a draw?
Ok, for real this time, we’re going to take a break from canon and go back to Marvel for the next installment of me going through the reprints. Join us next time, when we discuss the ramifications of Lexington thinking he killed a man (whaaaaaaat?). Yeah, I know.

We get to flashback to the events we opened the series with, but now from Demona's POV. We've already learned that she was part of Robert's plan to align with Hakon to get rid of the humans from this castle, but now we get to see more of the specifics and the ways in which Demona was involved.
It's also fascinating to me that the animation of Demona when she's with Goliath is so starkly different after Goliath leaves. There are suddenly more lines on her face. She's suddenly more gaunt, even more aged. Not in every panel, but in enough of them that it really is striking the way we're meant to see the Demona Goliath sees as innocent and angelic, his 'angel of the night.'
I can't decide if the switch is meant to clue kids in that these actions of hers are bad or if we're supposed to see this as how Demona views herself in this moment. Of course, the most, digging for meaning even where it might not be course would be to see this as how Demona sees herself. When she's scheming with Robert, a human, she sees a wickedness in her actions. Perhaps it's even a sign that there is some part of her that knows she was in the wrong here, even if she cannot address that to herself.
