I think it’s because theres a deep sense of longing that echoes with their absence. It feels as if it’s certain they will love each other for the rest of their life. With them being apart, nothing can come between them; nothing can ruin what they had, so all they will have left is a bittersweet memory of what once was and what never will be again. The memory of what they were will stay just like that just like a beautiful picture frozen in time, never to be tampered or altered. The memory can be revisited, but never relived. This nostalgia can be so poignant and enduring that they will desperately hold on to the love they shared, even if it’s just a memory.
