CHECK, PLEASE!: Year Four Kickstarter Late 2020 OR 2021Ā š
Hey folks! Answering a very frequently asked question. Yes, there will be a Kickstarter to print Year Four of CHECK, PLEASE. Weāll be making a self-published book of the fourth volume so that people with years One through Three can complete their collections.Ā š
Iām working on Huddle 4 and a Jack Zimmermann Falconers Jersey. These projects are time-consuming, so Iām getting started now. Thanks!
Iām writing a quick fic about Jack being horny for gap-tooth Bitty and absolutely NO ONE can stop me
āOh, Jack,ā Bitty said, pouting at his front facing camera.
āWell stop looking at it if it bothers you that much.ā
Bitty turned to Jack and gave him the full puppy dog face, widening his eyes and sticking out his lower lip. Jack, easily swayed, crossed the room to sit next to Bitty on his bed and put his arms around him.
Bitty hadnāt even been able to process that his mouth had one less tooth for almost a full six hours after the game. There had been the press, and the partying, and his boys! Absolutely nothing could drag him away from his team in that moment.
But now he had spent two days watching press videos where he had to talk through that gap and a possible mild concussion, and it may be vain, but he was a little bummed.
āI still think you look cute.ā
āYouāre my boyfriend, you have to thay that.ā Bitty sighed. āAnd itāth not even tho much how it lookth. Lithen to me!ā
8. Buying them something unrequested because it made you think of them. -- for Zimbits or Shitty/Lardo! Which ever ship tickles your fancy for that prompt. Thank you!
I decided to combine these asks since yāall asked for the same prompt and it is VERY fluffy! Thank you @mamashitty, @leahlisabeth, and anon for sending in a prompt! I hope you enjoy!
The Gift - Zimbits - ~1.5k - G
Jack was not a great gift-giver.
Or rather, Jack usually picked gifts that were a step in the right direction, then went absolutely overboard. He and Bitty were married now, and he was still being teased about the forty-dozen roses affair. Bitty, the regular receiver of these gifts, always accepted everything graciously, even if he was a bit embarrassed at times. In recent years, Jack had really made an effort to reign it in.
However, there was rarely a time he was able to leave for a roadie and not come back with something for Bitty.
Usually it was an interesting ingredient, a sugar or spice from whatever region he was in for Bitty to try in his bakes. Sometimes it was little keepsakes, postcards, shells or rocks. Bitty would always chastise Jack, saying he didnāt need more things, but Jack knew he kept everything.
Jack considered all of this while he unpacked his suitcase from his most recent trip. Bitty was down in the kitchen, testing a new recipe for his cookbook, so Jack knew he was safe to take out the most recent gift purchase without fear of discovery. He stared at the little paper bag from the store. He removed the gift and set it out on the bed just to look at it again and imagine Bittyās reaction. For a moment, he considered not giving it to him at all. At least, not yet. He could probably hide it somewhere in the house where Bitty couldnāt find it.
It had been a while since Jackās impulsive spending habits had gotten him in real trouble, but he was pretty sure heād reached new levels this time. His only comfort was that it was entirely Thirdyās fault.
The Falcs had been in Tampa for a game but had a rare afternoon off. The team went to the beach then out for lunch. They were about to return to the hotel when Thirdy said,
āWait, my wife made a request. Thereās some childrenās boutique nearby that she usually buys from online, and she wants me to grab a couple things for the girls.ā
Which was how half a team of pro hockey players ended up in a narrow, crowded store covered wall to wall with specialty childrenās toys and baby items. They even had a hockey section, though it was mostly merch for the Bolts (boo!). Not one of them was immune to the cuteness. Tater had immediately picked some books off the shelf was doing a dramatic reading of The Hungry Caterpillar. Marty was facetiming his wife, to make sure he didnāt come home empty handed. Jack had somehow found himself in a corner with the baby clothes, most of which were covered in cute artwork and puns.
āHaha, Thirdy, look at this one.ā Jack picked up a onesie with a picture of a kitchen-aid mixer with the text āWhip it Good!ā underneath, thinking heād just take a picture for Bitty. Suddenly, a shop employee materialized next to him.
āOh, do you have a baker in the family?ā she asked.
āUh, yeah,ā Jack said, still holding the onesie. The fabric was so soft, how did they make it so soft? āMy husband. We have like three of these mixers in the kitchen now.ā
āThen this would be the perfect gift for him!ā
āWell, we donāt actually haveāā
āMan, you have to get that,ā Thirdy said, peeking over Jackās shoulder. Thirdyās own arms were full of toys, fairy wings, and princess crowns. Another shopkeeper came up to him and offered to carry everything up to the register.
āI mean,ā Jack stuttered, āitās cute, butāā
āZimmboni, B would love!ā Tater said.
āSure, but guysāā
āI can wrap it up front for you,ā the shopkeeper said.
And that was how Jack had ended up leaving a childrenās boutique with overpriced baby clothing for a baby they didnāt have.
āWhen I am godfather of baby B,ā Tater said on the plane ride home, āI will provide baby with many more gifts. I will babysit every weekend. As you see, Iām already very good for bedtime story.ā
āTater, there isnāt going to be try-outs for a godfather,ā Jack said, already predicting Shittyās wrath if Tater got to be the godfather instead of him. āBesides, Bitty and I still donāt have a kid. Or even plans to have a kid.ā
āReally?ā Marty said, turning around in his seat. āHe hasnāt brought it up?ā
āBitty loves kids,ā Thirdy added.
āI know he does! But Iām away so much, and heās busy tooā¦we havenāt talked about it.ā
āThen why did you buy a baby onesie?ā
āBecause you guys told me to!ā
Now Jack was home, still without a game plan for the gift. Jack got as far as taking the bag to the closet to find some tall shelf that Bitty couldnāt reach to hide it before he realized that would be a stupid idea. Jack had never hidden anything from Bitty, he wasnāt about to start.
Jack walked downstairs to the kitchen, holding the handles of the little paper bag tightly in his fist. Bitty, appropriately, had two of the stand mixers going at once while he squinted at his laptop, tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth. Bitty had already showered Jack with plenty of kisses when he had arrived home, but Jack still felt that pang in his chest when he looked at him. They could never get used to being away from each other, even though Jackās career had always demanded it. Jack missed him every time.
āOh, good, honey,ā Bitty said when he saw Jack on the stairway, turning the mixers off. āIām about to pull these cookies out of the oven, I need your opinion.ā
āWhich ones are these?ā
āWe are on version 3.7 of the Trash Can cookie. The last one had no flavor, it was all sugar, so I added more coconut.ā Bitty put on his oven mitts and turned around. āBut now Iām concerned about texture andā¦honey, whatās that in your hand?ā
āUm, just a little something I picked up in Tampa.ā Jack placed the bag on the counter. āI wanted your opinion.ā
āOh, sure thing. One sec.ā
After Bitty had retrieved the cookies from the oven and set them out to cool, he inspected the present.
āSweet Pea Boutique?ā Bitty read the print on the bag. āIs that why you had to get something here, ācause youāre my sweet pea?ā
āWell. Just open it.ā
Bitty removed the tissue and unfolded the onesie. His face lit up, delighted, immediately followed by his mouth twisting in confusion.
āSweetheart, this is so cute! Of course youād pick out something with a silly pun, but itās adorable. Who is it for?ā
āThatās what I wanted to talk to you about.ā
āIs Gabby pregnant again? Or, oh my goodness, did Shitty and Lardo finally decide toāā
āItās for us!ā
Bitty stared, mouth agape.
āI want a baby.ā Jack shrugged. āSurprise?ā
āYou canāt surprise someone with a baby! Jack!ā
āI know, I didnāt mean ā the guys just got me thinking and I was like, why not?ā
āWhy not?ā Bitty put both elbows down on the counter. āA baby! Why not a baby?ā
āThereās a lot of logistics to discuss, of courseāā
āHe comes home and says to me, āa baby!āā Bitty looked up, arms raised to the sky. āHow long have you been planning this? Have you just been buying things for this hypothetical child all this time? Is there a nursery upstairs I donāt know about?ā
āWhat? No! I havenāt planned anything, I justā¦I had to buy this onesie.ā
At this, Bitty doubled over laughing, his face in his hands. Jack was not sure how to read any of these emotional responses.
āSo, do you want one? It doesnāt have to be soon.ā
āJack, honey.ā Bitty placed both of his hands on the side of Jackās face. āYes, yes I want a baby with you. I want a hundred babies with you.ā
āI was thinking likeā¦two. Maybe three, tops.ā
āJack!ā
āRight, weāll start with one.ā
Bitty rested his forehead on Jackās chest, shaking his head with laughter. Jack pressed a kiss against his temple.
āOr twins?ā Jack teased. Bitty snorted, lifting his chin to peck Jack on the lips.
āJack Laurent Zimmermann, I swear one day I will get a step ahead of your surprises.ā
āI hope you never do.ā
Jack wrapped his arms around Bittyās shoulders as Bitty picked the onesie back up off the counter. Jack was suddenly thrilled at the prospect of having someone else around to spoil with gifts and told Bitty so. Bitty pulled Jack down for a real kiss, lips soft and warm.
āHowever many babies we may end up having,ā Bitty said, āI know theyāre gonna feel just as loved as I do.ā
Ā Send me a prompt!
This is it. This is the image that I will hold in my heart for the rest of my life.Ā
Thank you, Ngozi š

Sheltering in place
Bitty and Jack spend time together in Providence
Bitty put the phone on the counter and huffed.
He almost wished for an old-fashioned landline phone for the satisfaction of being able to slam the receiver back on the cradle, but no such luck.
Pressing the āend callā button didnāt provide the emotional satisfaction, and he had to be careful with his phone. There was no telling when he could get the screen repaired if he cracked it. Were phone repair shops considered essential businesses? He was pretty sure the Apple store was closed.

ā Notes on Year 4, Comic 26 - Check, PleaseĀ ā
In the summer of 2013, I was fully mourning my completed time as an undergraduate at Yale. One of the collegeās traditional songsāwhich they strategically have students sing during their first weeks as Yalies and then again at the moment weāre conferred our degreesāgoes like this:
Bright College years, with pleasure rife, The shortest, gladdest years of life; How swiftly are ye gliding by! Oh, why doth time so quickly fly?
Et cetera. The first time you sing it, you mumble the words and donāt know a single person around you. The last time you sing it, wearing the mortarboard and gown, youāve got the lyrics memorized and youāre surrounded by some of the most important people in your life.
That summer, with āHow bright will seem, through memāryās haze/ Those happy, golden, bygone days!ā still ringing in my ears, I started CHECK, PLEASE.Ā The comicās first panels emerged on an ancient laptop, through a borrowed bamboo tablet, and on a free drawing program called gnu-IMPShop.Ā I had no plan. I wanted to explore my newfound fascination with hockey and share silly cartoons on Tumblr. But unconsciously, I also wanted to pour the nostalgia of those bright college years into the Haus, Faber, Samwell, and Bittyās story. I wanted to bottle up those moments where we grow and change and fall down and pick ourselves back up.Ā
Drawing CHECK, PLEASE was how I revisited those experiences and how I sifted through the bittersweet feeling of concluding something I loved. Perhaps this is why finishing CHECK, PLEASE calls back those same emotions. Just as Bitty would bake affection into a pie, I might have encoded into CHECK, PLEASE the heartfelt fondness I had for my time in college, the love of the friends I made there, and the gratitude I have for my own growth.
I have always found it easier to express gratitude face to face. And even though I would not have gotten to meet all of you, the greatest downside of being unable to participate in a book tour is that I canāt say thanks in person. I could write a thousand words, yet they couldnāt replace a high five at a bookstore signing or a handshake at a convention. I could write the blog post to end all blog posts, but itās not the same as yelling with you about an episode or chatting about a fandom we both happen be in. For me, itās those moments that somehow equate to my abundant appreciation for you, the reader.
I look forward to the day when I can let my actions speak louder than my words!
In the meantime: thank you. I am incredibly blessed to get to create a story and then share it. This is all I want to do in life. These characters get to have a readership overflowing with love and enthusiasm for them. This comic, somehow, has found ambassadors. This story gets to be told. Thank you!Ā Iām excited to share with you the unusual, fun, and hopeful narratives Iām working hard to develop.
So with that, Iāll sign off on the last blog post! Thank you for reading this comic. Thank you for sharing it with friends. Thank you for caring about Bittyās story and CHECK, PLEASE.
Thank you!
John J. Johnson.
