Haven’t drawn at the beach for a while. So today I headed there hoping to relax and draw peacefully. For some time I couldn’t find what to draw, there were all same trees and sea and ships on the horizon. Finally I spotted a bicycle beautifully parked near the tree. So I decided to sketch it. But the park was overcrowded this morning, like there was a holiday and not 10 am on Friday. There were a lot parents with kids, groups of preschool kids walking with teachers, groups of students running (a marathon?), other people running. The park at the beach was very loud today and people were constantly walking, talking and running right in front of “my” bike. And when I started sketching the scenes, a woman came at took the bike I was hoping to draw. So all disappointed and not relaxed at all, I headed home. At home I finished what I managed to sketch earlier, but decided to go with stylized version. Are you annoyed if someone asks you “Why are you so serious?” I was…yesterday. Someone, looking at my two previous self-portraits, asked me “Why did you draw yourself so serious?” Well, maybe because I’m a human being and I think it’s ok not to smile all the time. Especially if you sit in front of the mirror for an hour and try to draw yourself at different angles. Especially at 1 or 2 am. Especially when you have to wake up at 7 after that. Especially when you listen to the fresh news while drawing. So I was angry yesterday and decided to draw angry me last night. So here I’m sitting angrily in front of the mirror for an hour. I believe that we have the right to have different emotions: happy, sad, angry, annoyed. I don’t understand why a person who hardly ever smiles always thinks I have to be happy all the time and wouldn’t let me be sad if I’m sad. And if I don’t smile at the moment, it doesn’t mean I’m sad. I can be just calm, neutral and don’t want to use my smiling muscles at the moment (I’ve read about a woman who never smiled to avoid wrinkles on her face). Sometime it feels like some kind of emotional abuse. I like smiling, but not every second of my existence. It was one of my homeworks from the course on charcoal portrait. And this time there was a specific request to do the work on a specific tinted charcoal paper (should have been grey) and also I needed to use white chalk. Guilty…I didn’t use specified paper as I’d have to order it and wait for some time. So I just took a delivery bag from recycled paper and used it for the drawing. For the white I used my sons oil pastel as I didn’t find chalk at night. Don’t like the result, but I tried to do the best of what I had.
