Wayne shuts the door quietly. Hopefully the boys are asleep. They've had a rough couple of weeks and sleep has been few and far between. He takes his boots off and hangs his coat up. He walks to the kitchen, eyes not quite adjusted to the dark, but knowing the path after treading it a thousand times (unless Eddie leaves something in his path again). He grabs a mug and gets some water. Something to quench his thirst before he makes breakfast and goes to bed. He pauses, mug halfway to his mouth, when he sees the lumps on the couch.
Wayne sighs, sets the mug down, and heads towards the couch. "Y'all need to get to bed," he mumbles under his breath.
Getting closer reveals Eddie and Steve slumped together. Steve is underneath Eddie, arm dragging the floor, with some of Eddie's hair covering his face. Wayne reaches over the back of the couch and grabs an afghan to cover them. A whole lot it'll do since they've slept like that all night, but Wayne wants them to know they're taken care of.
For the last couple of months, Eddie and Steve had been going over finances like nobody's business. They want to move out of Hawkins in the new year and begin their lives. The last bit directly came from Eddie and Wayne tried his best not to snort. They were full of young bravado when they started talking about their plans.
And Wayne is proud of them.
He first learned about their relationship when Eddie was trying to sneak Steve out of his bedroom window. Eddie accidentally dropped the window on Steve's fingers when he saw Wayne. They ended up having a conversation together as Wayne checked on Steve.
Since then he's watched their relationship grow, from the early puppy love days, to first fights, and to Steve moving in with them after his parents kicked him out. They're turning into fine young men, even if now and then they still do stupid shit that makes Wayne sigh and roll his eyes.
He's had several one on one conversations with them both about if they feel ready to move out. Fears about making enough money, being 'too much,' for the other, or what to do if they do break up.
Wayne knows they've got this. They've thought about this more than he ever did when he left his parents' house. Plus, he'll support them in any way he can.
Someday he'll get to visit their shoebox of an apartment and see how they've turned it into a home. He'll meet their new friends and the joy on both their faces as they introduce their Uncle Wayne.
For now, he sets a pot down on the stove and grabs the oatmeal canister. He makes sure to set out brown sugar for Steve and Miss Esther's strawberry jam for Eddie.
