                 you bare your teeth, hands stretched back behind you, a vice like grip around alison’s wrists to keep her back as you stand in front of her and face your father. you knew that there would be consequences, you didn’t realise they would be quite so violent. alison makes to move and your grip tightens. were she still human, you would have broken her bones. a growl makes home in your chest, vibrating on your tongue as you watch his every move with black, black eyes. everything else around you is white noise. you watch his lips move and you know he’s telling you to step aside but you only bare your teeth further, crouching lower. 

     it’s been less than a day since alison died, since you turned her     –     made her like you. you haven’t had a chance to explain things properly beyond a simple you died, i saved you, we’re vampires     –     surprise     !     but you were so sure you would have time to teach her later, once things settled. you weren’t counting on peter’s violent reaction. he steps towards you, and you snarl.     ‘     don’t.    ‘     he doesn’t listen.

                when he lunges for alison, you meet him halfway. you push the blonde back behind you and collide with your father, but he is so much older than you, and stronger. his hands wrap around your throat and you know he won’t hurt you, you think he won’t hurt you     –     any more pressure and you’ll be headless, you can already feel the bones in your neck start to crack. there is a discomfort around your throat that, were you in desperate need of oxygen, would make it extremely difficult to obtain. you claw at his hands as he holds you up, legs dangling and toes just barely brushing the soil. you gasp in agony.     ‘     father,     ‘     --     you choke.     ‘     daddy, please     …     ‘     and then you see her.

vampires are governed by a council of elders. three of the oldest vampires known to their society who alternate reigns. one will rule while the other two sleep. every three hundred years, the next elder will wake and take the reigning leader’s place while he or she sleeps until it is their turn to rule again. 

ferals are nomadic vampires who have been without a coven for a period of time. usually after twelve months, the symptoms start to take effect. exposure to light is fatal to feral vampires and is the primary symptom. loss of humanity and state of mind are another, as well as an increased appetite.

vampires who belong to a coven and remain civilised are referred to as coteries. covens consist of three or more vampires with a clear sire as the original leader. it is possible to survive without becoming feral with just two but it is not recommended. a coterie vampire has the ability to day-walk. 

a vampire that has been exiled from a coven is at risk of becoming a feral but if they create their own coven before they succumb to their symptoms, they will not.

it is against the law to turn a human under the age of fourteen. even that age is frowned upon. 

a bite from a vampire will not turn a human. the human’s heart must stop first before they are bitten. the adrenaline from the bite causes the heart to pump at an accelerated rate, giving the vampire enough time to feed them a substantial amount of their own blood. turning is excruciatingly painful and not always successful.

vampires can not be killed via a stake to the heart. if anything, it is a hindrance and a nuisance. the only way to kill a vampire is through fire. a bite from a feral or a werewolf can be damaging to a vampire but will not kill them. anything short of decapitation, they will heal from.

enhanced speed, strength and accelerated healing are all strengths associated with a coterie vampire. a high level of intelligence, memory-recall, perfect vision and heightened senses are also strengths. a coterie vampire has the ability to feed on a willing or unwilling human and then wipe their memory of it afterwards. coterie vampires can day-walk, which means they can expose themselves to the sun however after several hours, it becomes uncomfortable. anything after eight hours of exposure is unbearable and will result in a burning hunger.

the bite of a coterie vampire can be either painful or pleasurable depending on the vampire. vampire feedings have been known to become addictive to humans which is why feeding on a fresh source is limited to those you intend to kill, and those who have volunteered. vampires can see flashes of memories from the blood they drink provided it is fresh and from the source. 

the hastings family, veronica and spencer in particular, primarily use blood bags from the bank or the hospital as their food source. certain blends can be used in tandem with blood to make human foods and beverages more satisfying. spencer uses blood in her coffee and veronica, in her wine. peter’s food source is jessica dilaurentis in canon timeline. veronica doesn’t care what he does with her as long as he doesn’t turn her. melissa uses various boyfriends to feed and then wipes their memories afterwards.

food can be consumed by a vampire but it is unnecessary. it does not sustain them. 

a vampire can not survive on the blood of an animal.

a coterie vampire has the option to sleep but they can go for weeks without it. 

feral vampires are faster and stronger than a coterie vampire but they are slow to heal and have lost their minds. they are not very intelligent, relying on their basic animal instincts. they can not walk in the sun and they can not sleep. a feral’s bite is venomous and will take weeks to recover from as opposed to mere hours. they are fatal to humans.

1486     -     peter hastings is killed is killed in london during the economical upheavel where he was forced off his land by the owner. he starved to death but was saved by a vampire. 

1967     -     just over two centuries later, peter makes a power play for the leadership of the coven he was brought in to. he fails and was exiled, facing the possibility of becoming a feral. 

1968      -     peter is drawn to veronica who is on trial as an accused witch. this is incorrect as the only crime veronica is guilty of is an intelligence beyond that expected of a woman. veronica’s ankles are bound by rope and rock and she is drowned. peter, a few months shy of transitioning in to a feral, sees an opportunity to build his own coven. he saves veronica, and turns her. 

1700     -     peter and veronica move from england to america. 

1755     -     they were happy together for a time but have started to feel the strain. veronica starts to question peter more than she ever did before and he becomes more violent.

1760     -     both peter and veronica come across melissa who is twenty-five at the time. she was attacked by her fiancé and left for dead when they stumbled across her body. after careful consideration, they both agreed and melissa was turned. taking melissa in as their daughter helped bring them back together although there are still tensions between them.

1853     -     veronica meets mary drake and her ten year old daughter, spencer. two years later, spencer falls ill and it is unclear whether she will survive. eventually, she pulls through. mary drake suspects the hastings of being different, however as she is a mentally unstable woman, no one pays her theories much mind.  by this time, the hastings have become a very influential coven and a powerfully wealthy family.

1858     -     spencer is fifteen years old and contracts scarlet fever. when it looks like she won’t pull through, veronica decides to turn her without consulting peter first. spencer is only one year older than the permitted age for turning a human. spencer brings peter and veronica even closer due to her age and the necessity for actual parents to teach and raise her.

2009     -     the hastings family moves to rosewood, pennsylvania. it doesn’t take long for alison dilaurentis to latch on to “fresh meat” and she befriends spencer at school. veronica and spencer begin to feel the strain under peter’s leadership but are unaware that they can leave. they are under the impression that if they leave their sire, they will become feral. peter never told them the truth but melissa knows.

2010     -     labor day, jessica dilaurentis buries her daughter alison alive in the backyard. spencer pulls her out and, after a moment’s hesitation, turns alison. she does not ask either peter or veronica for permission as it would have been too late. peter, furious, lunges at alison after she’s turned and semi-aware. spencer stands in his way and peter attacks her. veronica intervenes and alison runs off before spencer can explain about ferals and vampire lore.
