i saw the tv glow; watched it flicker and sat real close that i fear my eyes have gone square. my mother would yell at me, ‘turn it off! you’ll burn a picture into the screen.’ but the light from the tv made the nights less scary and i was able to experience freedom, i didn’t need to keep looking over my shoulder.

when i asked people how they felt about it all, i came to learn that not everyone owned a tv - i felt privileged, but i knew my mother didn’t see it like that; tv’s meant less money- more bills to pay.

she’d beg and plead for me to switch it off, at least whilst my grandmother was in town – according to her, there were no tv’s in her time – but the remote was broken, or perhaps it was just that the batteries were flat, all i know is that no matter how much i pressed the off button, the tv would continue to glow.
