I’m not sure if this counts, but this Bloody Mary was amazing! [5312x2988]
Breakfast for one!Â
8 Components of an NYC Brunch
Like walking briskly down a city street, or defending our local sports teams to the death, brunching is something New Yorkers do best. After eating my way through enough of them, these iconic brunch haunts begin to take on similar characteristics. Here are some typical components I've experienced over the years, everywhere from the cafes of Stone Street, up to the Red Rooster in Harlem:
The prix-fix deal that sounds reasonably priced, but isn't.
The mid-afternoon dance party.
The ridiculously long wait-time
Menu items that sound really different, but all taste the same.Â
How every bar/restaurant smells like last night's stale beer.Â
Everyone vying for the al fresco tables.Â
The cell phone conversation.Â
Your favorite brunch spot being closed for a private party.Â
Despite all that, brunch is still one of my favorite pastimes. Check out the full article from HuffPo.Â

As such, you can imagine the infinite number of eateries across New York City. Seeing as Chinese food is one of my favorite cuisines, I took it upon myself to pick my top five across all of the boroughs. Phin Upham Presents: Peppercorn - Part 2
[Check out Part 1]
The ancient Greeks took pepper with their scallops, and made reference to the spice in several plays and works of art dating back to 400 BC. The Romans considered pepper the de facto spice for trade on the Indian Ocean, and they paid India dearly for it. Pepper was stockpiled, like any other currency. The Roman cook Apicus mentioned pepper 452 times throughout his writings, indicating the spice was relatively popular.
Pepper as a fad is a strange journey into fashion. The pink peppercorn, which resembles a true peppercorn but is actually closer to poison ivy, was considered a fashionable spice during the 1980s. The peppermill, used to crack pepper freshly, can trace its origins back to France. It became popular in America in the 1880s, when the Americans replaced their packaged and ground pepper with the fresh alternative.

Phin Upham Presents: Peppercorn - Part 1
Using the Peppercorn
Pepper, in both black and white, is from the dried piper nigrum plant. The tropical plant is native to the East Indies, and must be harvested before it is ripe to get the proper flavor. Throughout history, pepper was a symbol of wealth. Pepper was used as currency, and it was also given as gifts too. It was a huge honor to receive pepper from a friend or cohort in ancient times. Pepper also has some connection to Christmas food, which harkens to a time when cooks would save their best for last. Pepper was among many spices that would come out at the end of the year, resulting in tasty creations like gingerbread.Â
Tis the season for cold treats! It’s summertime in the Big Apple and everybody is looking to cool down. Personally, nothing cools me down faster than a nice cold Ice Cream. While you can never go wrong with Mister Softee, I’ve been on more of a gourmet ice cream kick lately. For some of my favorite spots, check out this vid.Â

Sourdough Bread has been a large part of the culture of San Francisco since the California Gold Rush, when French bakers brought sourdough techniques to Northern California. In fact, the mascot for the San Francisco 49ers is named, “Sourdough Sam.” In this video, I point out some of the most popular sourdough spots in San Fran.
