Don’t you just love it when you spend your whole life being seen as Japanese, being told you’re Japanese, being dismissed as Japanese by white people? You get made fun of or ostracized (directly or indirectly) because of the cultural ties you share with the country of your ancestors, and you are made to feel ashamed of who you are and what you do. You’re forced to keep your head down because you can’t want to be seen as too Japanese. But you still get teased for your “strange” food and are asked “no, where are you really from?” (because apparently you must be a foreigner and everybody knows that?) and you have to deal with a thousand other types of interactions that make it very very clear that nobody sees you as anything other than Japanese, regardless of how you personally identify. And maybe you even have parents or grandparents or great-grandparents that were imprisoned solely because they were of Japanese descent, regardless of whether or not they were also American citizens. So you know that this is no new thing.
