I’m considering rewriting my PhD proposal to centre the argument that AI’s necessary use of universal logic precludes it from ever attaining the kind of freedom and consciousness that is characteristic of humanity.

I have always been sympathetic to Kant’s transcendental idealism though I interpret it in my own way and no doubt I am not strictly Kantian to the letter, but I find the structure of Kant’s metaphysics to be very compelling in their epistemological foreclosure of things-in-themselves. I feel that the absence of the “unknowable” from the “point of view” of artificial intelligence means that these systems can act only from necessity and since the ground of our actions is unknowable by design, we can never create an AI which can attain freedom and consciousness as we have it.

I’m basically writing this text post to explain my own thoughts to myself and to see what contradictions arise in my own argument so I can better understand the point that I’m trying to make.
